COBRA to Medicare?

I currently have health coverage through COBRA. My 65th birthday is mid-October this year. Will I automatically be dropped from COBRA coverage when I am Medicare eligible? If so, would my COBRA coverage end Oct. 1 or Nov. 1? I may be offered a job with health benefits starting 30 days after my hire date. I would like to keep my COBRA coverage and delay starting Medicare until I know if I have the new job. The job health benefits would be a lot cheaper than Medicare with Medigap.

  • You will not automatically be dropped from COBRA. You may be able to delay the start of Medicare, please contact your Medicare office for more details. If you choose to delay the Medicare start date, you can continue on your current COBRA policy. If you are not able to, your COBRA would end October 1st. Medicare always starts the first day of your birth month.
