Managing Students from Previous Semesters

I deleted students from a group (AUM-SCED 1000) and then from the teacher dashboard tried to add students (who didn't pass the previous semester) to this semester's group (AUM-SCED 1000 v2). The new group is available to check when I attempt to edit the students profile on the teacher dashboard but under "groups" on the teacher dashboard the group doesn't show up; and the student is not listed as a group member when I go back to the group manager. If the student tries to respond to the invitation, it says his/her email is already in use. So, I guess my question is how do I add a student to a group when they aren't in any groups yet (since I deleted them from the original group)??
