I’m a happy consultant.

my (mostly positive!) review of 5pm

Discovering and implementing 5pm for my key client has been a lifesaver. I've written up a review at http://ade.pt/toolkit/project/5pm

  • Hello Kazar (I assume it's your name).

That's a very positive review indeed - thank you.

There are some comments though we wanted to add, but your blog doesn't allow unauthorized comment and there is no registration button. So I'll post the comments here - feel free to update your blog with them.

About the things you wished for:

    1. "better reports" -* totally agree. We need more reports. What reports you have in mind? Could you please share with us?

    2. "data exchange" - you can export to CSV many more fields. You have to add them first to the General Report by using the right click on column headers - same way you add columns to the main interface. Once you have the columns on the screen - CSV will also contain them . Start date and Deadline are available as well and many more.

    3. "account backup" - we do have a raw backup:
    http://www.5pmweb.com/feature_backups...

    4. "milestones" - we still try to avoid adding this extra category, but I see your point. May be tagging or color coding will help with that - this way you can mark some tasks visually as milestones. We are considering this direction.

Thank you for your review. And stay tuned - more features are coming.

  • I’m even more pleased.
    thanks for your response.

    1. I had not noticed the Edit Columns pop-up in the Reports UI. Re "what reports" I have in mind, now that I know I can get to all the columns and also could even rebuild the database locally, if I wanted, and massage the data every which way ... I'm not sure! My complaint was mostly due to my misconception that there was no way to get all the data into csv. If I think of any reports that I believe would have popular appeal for all types of organizations, I will let you know.

    2. Thanks for the tip. Clearly I haven't read every word of the docs!! One thing I would suggest would be to consolidate the content of FAQs, Help page, Academy, etc. into one manual. The docs are good but in order to uncover info I find it's sort of hit-and-miss depending on whether one thinks "that would be a FAQ" or "maybe they show how to do this in the video on this topic". (Now you're probably gonna show me a link to The Manual that I am blindly not seeing :-) )

    3. Wow. I have some blog editing to do. Good thing I did not syndicate to FB yet.

    4. I pretty much agree about not adding the extra milestone "layer" as I put it in my blog. One of the key reasons I went with 5pm over Planzone was because Planzone enforces that one MUST first establish time-boxed "Activities", then Milestones are connected in a child-to-parent relationship to Activiites (seems backwards to my brain), and then and only then can one add To-Dos. There is way to much to enter, then, for the average relatively simple project. I get data for a two-month-long editorial cycle, for example, entered into 5pm in approximately 1/3 the time it takes to set it up in Planzone.

HOWEVER, color coding the entire expanse of a task that has been flagged as a Milestone does not really solve the visual/cognitive lack. A milestone is an end-point, a target, a goal. So I would suggest that for a task flagged as a milestone a diamond-shaped icon be added at the deadline date point in the timeline.

I will edit my blog piece and post back. Sorry about being invited to comment but having no way to sign up ... clearly I have a ways to go in Drupal admin, lol. Please note: I wrote a memo via the parent Quatro web site's contact form asking for permission to use screenshots from your screenshot web page ...

(NOTE: I've been participating on these forums under my "operations" personna from within my client's account ... since that's where I"ve been spending all my 5pm-user time)

  • I’m feeling silly for missing some good and important features!
My edits are done. Funny how the most major shortcoming became a major plus, thanks to your patience with my ignorance about the backup feature.

Please let me know about using screenshots, thanks (I cannot reveal my client's data to the public, and do not have time to mock up dummy projects to make my own screenshots)
