ATTENTION: End of Support for 7Notes on iOS 11

To Our Valued Customers,

We would like to extend our deep appreciation for your long patronage of our 7notes apps on iOS, but we regret to inform you that we will stop supporting it from iOS 11.

You will not be able to use our 7notes apps (7notes/7notes Premium/7notes HD/7notes HD Premium) on iOS 11. This is because the upcoming OS update does not allow 32-bit apps like 7notes to run.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a simple backup process to keep your notes usable on iOS. We can suggest the following ways to migrate your 7notes documents:

1. If you own an Android or a Kindle device
You can export your notes from 7notes/7notes Premium (for iPhone) to the 7notes app (7notes Free) on Android or Kindle via e-mail or any external storage app such as Dropbox, Evernote, etc.

Please note however, the iPad apps (7notes HD or 7notes HD Premium) are not able to export notes to the Android/Kindle apps.

2. If you have 7notes HD or 7notes HD Premium (iPad apps) or you don't have any Android/Kindle devices
You can store your notes as PDF files. Then you will be able to import the PDF files into our MetaMoJi Note apps (http://noteanytime.com) or other apps that can import PDF. This process will mean that you can read your notes but not edit them anymore.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Yours sincerely,
Toshi, Global Support Team, MetaMoJi

  • Unfortunately I upgraded my iPad to IOS 11 before copying my stored notes that were on 7NotesHDPremium.

Is there a way now that I can retrieve the notes? This is very important for me.

  • I’m cross
7Notes has been, seriously, one of the most valuable and important apps that I use (until this morning!!!). Unfortunately I have no reason to come to this help page regularly - I could not possibly go to the support pages of every app that I use. So the notification about the end of support for 7Notes appears to have been ineffective for many users. I feel absolutely let down. I don't normally have emotional responses about apps - I feel really let down by the way this change has been promulgated. This was the ONLY app that I found that met my handwriting/note-taking needs.
By the way, the Evernote add-on stopped working for me some time ago (more than a year) - I simply let that pass as I was still able to access notes within 7Notes
Please do respond - even if the answer is negative: is there any way to recover the numerous notes that I have stored in 7Notes?

  • I’m frustrated
I have also been caught unawares with this latest development and now find myself without access to very important notes and information in 7Notes HD Premium.
Please provide a solution for this problem as I cannot afford to lose this information.

Any reply, Toshi? We aren’t feeling VERY valued at present. Can we at least get the files out somehow?

    Dear our customers,

The 7notes apps on iOS are our first tablet/smartphone apps.
They are too old to upgrade to the latest OS.
There is no development environment to make the app work or to add a function for the 64-bit environment on iOS 11; we will never build the app any more.

I recently found an article to downgrade iOS11 to iOS 10.x:
    https://www.imobie.com/support/how-to...

    We apologize for the inconvenience.
    Best regards,
    Toshi

  • I’m frustrated & disapointed
    I sent email:

Just updated my iPad to IOS 11 and discovered (to my horror) that you have abandoned your “valued customers”.
I have been a faithful 7notes HD Premium user for years and have 256MB of files. I have recommended 7Notes to others at every opportunity. My notes include my mothers eulogy, church sermons, personal journal entries, and business notes. I can’t perceive your motivation to not continue this popular product. There is a significant revenue opportunity if you would update the 7Notes app but release it under a new name with “support” for 7notes data and charge a premium fee. I would gladly pay such a fee. On the other hand if you truly plan to abandon your customers I would not consider purchasing any MetaMoJi products in the future.

Got the following response from Toshi:

Thank you for getting in touch with us.

As we posted in our 7notes community site and the product site, we cannot support the 7notes apps on iOS 11:

Regarding the iPad apps (7notes HD/7ntoes HD Premium, they are tablet apps), there is no way to transfer the notes to the 7notes app on Android/Kindle (smartphone apps).
You can only export your notes as PDF as described in:
    https://getsatisfaction.com/7notes/to...

    We apologize for the inconvenience.

  • I’m frustrated & disapointed
Seems, in the interest of retaining their "valued customers", MetaMoJi could consider a simple iOS11 app that would at least read the 7notes files.

I too had no notice. Since I never experienced any issues with 7notes, I never had cause to seek out the user's group. The irony is, if it wasn't such a great product I wouldn't be so ticked off now.
    • Completely agree. When I get a moment, I'll be warning users of every other product delivered by MetaMoJi that this app developer might well allow their product to stop working at any time - and they may do this without even pushing out an update to generate a warning message for users and without providing any backward compatibility even to get the files back.
    • I agree. When Apple stop supporting an app (eg Aperture 3) they at least tell everyone well in advance - years before it becomes unusable!. Looking back, MetaMoji hasn’t provide any updates to 7Notes for a long time - but has said nothing about their intentions! I don’t believe they would have suddenly decided in the past few months “Oh, this app will be too much work to upgrade!”. And, I wonder when they stopped offering it for sale??? In spite of having the very polite Toshi as the guy who has to respond, MetaMoji is a company that disappoints its customers. How sad that a company can produce such an exceptional product (with few peers) and then let its customers down so badly. They didn’t even bother to consider the outcome for app users - they come back with “Oh, we’ve look around and , here’s something that may help you revert to iOS10. They could not even tell us in advance that an available alternative was to save notes in a Kindle - and I own a bloody Kindle!!! Finally, giving users an apology “for the inconvenience" is rudeness that shows the organisation does not care. Pathetic.
I don’t care if MetaMoji has other excellent apps - I would not be prepared to trust them. Like Jay, my anger is aggravated by the value I placed on the app. But, in any case, this is shameful and arrogant behaviour by a developer. I wonder if they really have the courage to explain this, beyond the fact that it was all too hard to develop further.

  • OK people, No thanks to MetaMoji. But I have a solution that worked to some degree for me but it costs £35. Download iMazing (free so far). Backup your device using the software - this particular one allows you to back it up to an external drive. Then choose your device and select "Export Raw Data" from the options on the right. This is where I upgraded to the paid option. Maybe you don't need to. You'll then have a mess of stuff that represents everything on your ipad. Navigate to /ipad files/Your iPad/AppDomain-com.7knowledge.international.7notesHDPremium/Documents/cache.1/contents/

You'll then find your files as jpegs in there. They will be varying quality. The blue pens I used are far less readable than black. They are basically thumbnails, I think. The full documents are there in an adjacent directory - but I don't know what would read them.

This helped me anyway. At least I have some fuzzy clues. Good luck. What a ridiculous position for us all to be put in. MetaMoji really needs to create an app to extract these files and make them readable.

  • Thanks Matt your “amazing”
I tried it and it worked as advertised.
A little awkward that they use JPEGs and it takes some effort to sort out the files but everything is there.

MetaMoJi just doesn’t understand that they took a piece of our lives when they killed 7Notes.

  • Thank you so much, Matt! I saw your review on another MetaMoji app, and thus knew it was possible to get my 7notes files out somehow. I'm so glad you've given instructions here.

I can add a way to get the data out without paying for the full version of iMazing:

Do as Matt says with the backup. Then,

select File System in the left-hand navigation pane, then go to Apps -> 7notes -> Backup

You can navigate to cash.1 -> contents from there, and open the JPEGs from iMazing, or you can control-click (I'm on a mac - whatever the 'special click' is on your machine) and select "Copy to Mac" (or the equivalent). It will warn you that you have only 10 such actions before you need to pay, but then you can export it to a folder and look through them at your leisure. (Or export the whole Backup, and get all those other files too...)

  • One other matter that I’m still struggling with, since losing 7Notes, is finding an adequate replacement app. I haven’t found ANY that offer instant handwriting conversion to printed text! I’m now waiting to hear from a stylus manufacturer if they know of any options.
Unbelievable that MetaMoji had so little competition and couldn’t be arsed to even adequately warn users of their intentions. MetaMoji & customer service = oxymoronic.
I would appreciate thoughts about an alternative app if ex-users are looking.
