"Scope" toggle filter. (separating work and personal made easy)

I'd like to see the ability to be able to filter the whole thing by personal / professional. I use the same gmail account to send and receive as my business email and personal emails, so I have everything in one place. In order to split each view to keep my eyes off of work stuff when I'm at home and vice versa, I've added a Label (Personal/Professional) Type that I called "scope-sc". I have "Sort by" selected to "Scope". I'd like to be able to click something in the upper left that toggles all label filters on the top to exclude personal, professional or neither, depending on my selection ( which presumably would add "-sc-personal" when I have selected professional) This would be especially helpful with projects, allowing me to merge my custom "Jobs-J" label type back where it should be in "Projects-P" without going crazy trying to parse out the other. Also, any item archived (as an option) could be automatically labeled (professional or personal) based on the scope selected.

  • Hello Chris

Thanks for this post. I can see where you're coming from with the logic but it sounds like a very complicated system (I'm happy to be wrong) to implement. I also have several email accounts in my own email - but I have filters set up so emails are marked as they come in.

I'll speak to Andy at our next Suggestions meeting which isn't for a few weeks and see what he says then come back and update the thread.

  • That's all I can hope for. Until then I can keep putting -label:sc-professional or -label:sc-personal up on the top whenever I use one of your filters, and keep professional projects as a separate label type

Just for my benefit (as I can be known to overcomplicate) perhaps my implementation could be better. Which is the complicated part:

Receiving work and personal emails on the same account?

Being able to quickly shift perspectives from personal to professional on that account at the click of a button?

    or

Having to have a seperate label type for job related projects, having to select professional or personal for each item, and having to add -label:sc-professional or -label:sc-personal to remove items that apply...

I realize context should take care of this in theory. But projects don't get these labels. Projects don't have context in GTD, Actions do. But when reviewing projects, I (by the time I'm finally done transferring and collecting) would have so many combined personal and professional projects... already my list, when it was combined, was overwhelming when it came to reviewing my project list every week. Splitting it helped. And then looking at it from a context perspective, I have different errands I run for work and home. I had to split the two using the "Group By" drop down in conjunction with the Scope type. I really don't like having to select which scope applies to each item, so the idea occurred to me to have 2 different "modes" to operate in which would apply the scope based on my selected mode.

To me, implementation does seem complicated, but the end result is simple. And that's the point of programming, get the complicated out of the way once... and for all.

    I'd help if I could.

Thanks again for a terrific product, it is truly the best out there. I think it's better than the GTD plugin with outlook, personally. Looking forward to what's next, I'm sure it will be more of the same (excellence).

  • Hello Chris

Thanks for adding to the post with more information - that's really helpful. As I'm not a technical person I couldn't tell you what part would be the problem - it just seems like a complicated 'ask'. I don't think the issue is having personal and business accounts coming into the same inbox - I think lots of people do that.

I'll go through it with Andy at our next Suggestions meeting which we have every few weeks and then come back to you. We don't have the date of the next one yet but I will let you know when we've gone through your whole post and I'll let you know what his views are.

  • Hello Chris

I had a chat with Andy about your Suggestion and he said it's 'under consideration' which is a big step forward. I don't have any timescale for further movement at the moment due to the number of things we have going on behind the scenes but it will come up again to be looked into in more detail.

  • Thanks for the GREAT news. Thank you so much for spending time with this. I hope, if it gets implemented, that it proves helpful and productive. I know it would save me several clicks per task.
