  • @Isarian, You seem a whole lot more tech savvy than I do, I don ́t know if you have seen this post, but I came across it from a year ago, where Andy says something about how AIB works. I am not sure if it is updated, but maybe it will shed a bit of light on the subject:

  • Thanks rfrazee, it looks like the post basically confirms what we already knew - that Plus user credentials are hashed sent to the AIB server to authenticate the user. This still leaves us in the awkward position of being all washed up if the server goes down again, and still no response from Lisa or from Andy.

  • Hi Isarian,

Thanks for nudging me on this issue - I was under the impression it was resolved, so please accept my tremendously humbled apologies for not giving out the details, and let's get an answer.

    So, the cause:

Ah, this is very embarrassing to admit! I was setting Sal up to do some analysis of our statistics data (he's here to listen to and aggregate people's needs), and there was a bug in one of my scripts that kept the database connection constantly open. Eventually (after a few days), we used up all the connections and the entire site felt over.

Now, this shouldn't normally be a problem - ActiveInbox Plus is designed to work in low-connectivity conditions, and keep the Plus features activated even if it cannot reach the server for 24 hours.

Unfortunately in this instance, not all the database connections were fully used up until I was out of office at the end of the week, and so we didn't immediately spot the problem (and in particular, anyone who was just registering Plus for the first time - i.e. after having bought it - would not have the 24 hour grace period already established; and so it instantly failed for them).

In resolution to this, I've set up a spare website to monitor the main website, and to contact me directly within 15 minutes if it fails.

    I hope that clarifies it!

The last few weeks in particular have been dedicated to increasing the robustness. Lisa is taking a brief last minute hiatus, but otherwise all the systems have been heavily upgraded for both detecting any issues in AIB (especially around Gmail changes) and rapidly updating them.
