Any progress on removing indications of new emails in AIB 6?

A while back some of us noticed that there was no way to completely hide the fact that you've received new emails when using AIB 6. Even if you pin the Chrome tab holding Gmail, a blue dot appears when new emails have arrived. So, those of us who are easily distracted (e.g. me), have fallen back to V5, where there are ways to hide the fact that new emails have arrived.

Has there been any progress on removing any indication of new emails in AIB 6?

Thanks!

Ben

  • Hello Ben

Sorry this was missed when you sent it in. In the Classic version, do you mean when you are in focus mode and can't see new emails arriving?

If not, let me know what you meant.

  • Hi, Lisa,
Is the Classic version v5? If so, then yes, the Classic version. In it, if I collapse the inbox (using the arrow next to it) and then, on the left side of the screen select 'Today', I don't see when new emails have arrived, thus eliminating the distraction.

I'd like to use some of the cool AIB v6 features and UI improvements but I don't believe there is still any comparable way to remove a distracting indication that new emails have arrived. Am I right?

    Thanks!

  • Hello Ben

You can still shut off the inbox and have Today showing, but the count on the Inbox does show; you're correct. I don't believe we're looking at changing that at the moment. I'll change this to an 'Idea' and add it to our Suggestions list to be looked at.

  • Thanks for the followup, Lisa,
Whenever this question came up in the past it seemed to generate a good deal of support. A number of people talked about wanting to be free of the distraction of knowing that new emails have arrived.

    Hi Ben,

Just checking (I'm sure you don't), but if you go into Gmail Settings, and then Labs, do you have "Unread message icon" turned on?

I've got to the bottom of this... and sadly I can't stop it :(

The 'blue dot' in Chrome happens whenever the page title changes on a pinned tab... And it's so baked in, that unlike a lot of things with Javascript, I can't tell Chrome to turn the blue dot off.

And I can't find a preference in Gmail to stop it from updating the title. So it'll keep happening.

The only thing I can think of, as ridiculous as it sounds, is to turn the blue dot on permanently. So you no longer spot a difference.
    How would that sound?

  • Thanks for checking, Andy. Here are my thoughts:
    1) Is there a way to remove the indication of new emails if the tab isn't pinned? That would be fine for me. (in V5 you did it by searching for emails with the right labels in the gmail search bar, which changed the tab text to 'search results')

    2) For pinned tabs, I'd prefer to always have the blue dot on. That eliminates the distraction because it no longer changes when new emails come in. That said, you might want to make this 'optional' so less distractible folks who want the notification can get it. I haven't thought this through but maybe there is some sort of 'disconnected' mode that makes it feel like your Gmail is no longer connected to the internet even though, in the background, it still is.

Actually, I see that Gmail now supports an offline mode - maybe there's a way to capitalize on that. Of course, perhaps it screws up other AIB functionality. I haven't tried it so I don't know.

In any case, thanks for giving this issue your attention.

We'll support Offline mode when Gmail has upgraded it for new Gmail, but at the moment we don't.

BUT good news!! I cracked the case :-D

It took me a while, but I'm pleased to report I've managed to fully hide the pesky blue dot in all cases with V7. Update coming later today (it'll be 7.0.7).

    Hi Ben -

When it upgrades to 7.0.7, turn off Classic and have a play with the inbox toggle. It *should*:
    - Hide the actual inbox
    - Hide the count in the sidebar
    - Hide the count in the tab title
    - Stop the tab title turning blue when you get a new email

Can't thank you enough for prioritizing this, Andy! It looks like exactly what I wanted. I'll play with it for a few days to make sure it's working and let you know (sorry) if there are any glitches.

BTW, the initial operation was a bit confusing. It didn't occur to me that I had to close the inbox (i.e. click on the arrow next to the word 'Inbox') to make this work. It all makes sense, It just wasn't immediately obvious to me.

Anyhow, thanks again, Andy. This is a huge improvement. We, the easily distracted of the world, salute you! :)

  • OK, this is way better but I have come across one / two small issues (sorry):
    1) If my inbox is empty but then an email comes it, the count shows up in the tab as well as in the icon in the Windows 10 task bar (not sure if you can do anything about that):

    2) Pinning the tab does seem to work (i.e. no blue dot), but the Win 10 taskbar issue still exists:

The top tab seems like a little bug (if you 'hide' the inbox with no items in it, you never get the 'inbox hidden' message in the top tab). And, like I said, not sure if you can do anything about the Win 10 task bar items. Still, the new functionality is a huge improvement.
    • OK, I just noticed that the blue dot does appear on the pinned tab if email comes in while the focus is on another tab.
    • One more note, Andy... If I leave one email in my inbox, in read status (rather than filing it), it seems to solves the problem for me. It's a kludge on my end but it works and, with that, this latest enhancement is working really well for me - I managed to get through a few hours this afternoon, being able to use email as my to-do list but without being distracted by my inbox - thank you so much!
