I’m anxious

My updated statuses and due dates are not sticking.

Something weird and disheartening is happening with my AIB. I've been using the service for a long time, and this is a new bug that I've been noticing on and off for a couple or three weeks now. Worst of all, it's easy not to catch it, which can cause emails to get lost in the system.

Updates to statuses and due dates are not sticking. For instance, right now I have 22 items set with today as their due date. I can't do all 22 today, so I have changed one item at a time to due dates on other days when I will be able to complete them. As I do this, they show that the due date has changed and they move out of my "today" radar pane. Then, moments later, they all reappear! I've gone through this series of steps three times and the continue to reappear in "today". I've refreshed gmail. I am not experiencing any connectivity problems that might prevent the labels from being applied.

I am not sure if other labels are not sticking, because they would not be as easy to notice as this "I can't get the thing out of 'today'" issue. This is troublesome for me.

  • I had this happen recently too. First time I saw it was a few days ago, at least that I'm aware of. I strongly suspect it happened on several other occasions, after which I questioned my having made the changes and assumed I imagined having done so.

I only open one instance of each Gmail account. Most importantly, I haven't changed anything with my basic Gmail configuration for at least a few years. This AIB issue just cropped up suddenly with no apparent cause. I would suspect an issue with one of the latest versions of AIB. A tab refresh fixes the problem for me for that session, but it is disheartening since it's at the core of AIB's functionality.

Lisa - I have some suspicion that this is related to the phantom selection issue, as for me it occurred during the same session at the same time as the issue idzyn described. Here's that other issue, for reference:
    https://getsatisfaction.com/activeinb...

idzyn - did this occur when you made changes to Radar items by selecting them (as opposed to opening the email and postponing the date)? I suspect that's the case, as it would match my theory above.

There are some ghosts in the system it seems. I know they're hard to diagnose, since they don't occur every time, but I think it's important to try given the nature of these problems and the loss of data and time that can result from them.

  • Me also happened the same, I was only one instance and it's happening daily.

To make sure I'm not missing anything, I open gmail several times during the day to ensure that will be sure what I do.

    It's happening the following problem:

You are using normal filing, putting date and then he just loses what you did and back.

When this happens, it is bound to enter the gmail again and give it back to function normally, but after a while it happens again.

  • I'm sorry - for some reason I wasn't notified of the replies above that included questions for me.

Lisa: I only use one gmail instance at a time.

MZ: Yes, this only seems to happen with a checkbox selection in the radar. However, the reason I signed in to GS just not to revisit this thread is that an email that I processed recently seems to have lost all of its tags - I only realized it had been lost because it was one of two emails - so when I saw one, it reminded me that there were two - when I went to find the other, it had no labels at all, even though I had applied a project and a status in addition to the due date.

So, from my vantage point, AIB seems to be breaking and I'm losing my confidence in it. I also believe that being able to trust the system is the most important attribute it must have - if I can't trust it, I can't use it.

  • Andy Mitchell (ActiveInbox Founder) July 01, 2015 09:52
    Hi all,

I've been trying to trigger this for the last few days (specifically, by editing due dates on items already in the Radar). So far, it's been flawless on my personal account.

    How repeatable is this?
    1) Does it happen all the time, even if you refresh Gmail?
    2) If not, once it starts in a session, does it become 100% repeatable (happen every time)?
    3) Do you see an Warnings in ActiveInbox (from the ActiveInbox Account menu) after it's happened? If so, can you submit them and let me know?

It's sounding like the change isn't taking on the Gmail server - so the local data updates with the new due date, then we get a refresh from Gmail's server, overwriting our local data with the old time stamps.
That's obviously a definite and massive error.

  • Andy,

    1) I've noticed no pattern one way or the other.
    2) It does seem to "get worse" once it starts occurring, but I can't say it's 100% repeatable. I know this only because emails that have lost label changes seem to have done so in sets where I changed several at about the same time during the same session.
    3) I haven't noticed, but I'll take a look next time. The problem is, I often have restarted Gmail between the time I change the email labels, and the time I notice that the emails weren't really changed.

Could this be related to the selection issue I just posted a detailed description of? There, I highlighted a case where selections are not what they appear to be when emails are selected from the Radar and changed that way. Selections can be cleared but are not "really cleared". Perhaps there is a related issue when labels are changed in this way - where they're not "really changed"? Or perhaps, we're changing labels for emails that don't appear to be selected? This is the post I'm referring to here:

  • I will have to start looking for it - in order to avoid this problem, I have stopped checking items in radar and changing their statuses. I have to open them email, and change the status in the open email, then go back to the inbox/radar and deal with the next email. It makes inbox/today processing much, much slower.

I believe it's even happened a couple of times using this method, but I can't say that for 100% certain. However just yesterday I selected a number of items in radar and changed the due dates on them via radar and it did stick. I'll start using it again and see if I can keep a record and/or establish a pattern.

    Thanks.

  • Well, I've gone back to handling my inbox mostly the way I did before - checking items and changing statuses and due dates from the radar - so far so good, everything seems to be back to normal. Kind of scary if you didn't do anything to fix this, because I'd have no idea why it was happening, but I'm glad it's not happening any more - makes life MUCH more efficient for managing tasks. So thanks.

  • Lisa,

I may have seen the problem today, but I'm not sure, since I could have simply neglected to change some labels I thought I had. Can you please check with Andy to see whether he made changes in the 5.2.13 version? If not, the problem is likely still there I would think.

Idzyn - after making changes in the Radar, do you deselect items if they stay selected? Example: if you have Today and Action sections in your radar, postponing an item might keep it in the Action section, and it might stay selected there. Then later, it might get "re-selected" on its own in conjunction with other tasks you're changing in batch, so you might be inadverantly applying labels to emails you don't intend to. I discussed this a bit in my last post on this thread. What sections do you have in your Radar? Do you make a habit of de-selecting emails after you've changed their labels?

  • MZ - when this started happening I changed my radar - before this I had today, tomorrow, next and waiting all in my radar. But then things started staying selected after I changed statuses, and I was worried that I might have been making unintentional status changes because I didn't realize something was still selected after it disappeared from the visible radar only to still be selected in some other radar below the fold. So I reduced the radar to only one: Today. This eliminated the problem since I only have one radar open. It is not ideal, but I can't stomach the thought of accidentally changing statuses on important emails and not being aware of it. So I'm staying with the limited radar.

  • Bingo - this fits the pattern. I suspect the self-selection problem and the status "not sticking" are in fact the same issue.

Lisa - I can't easily verify, since I do that know precisely why this was happening. However, I've noticed it less once I started to keep a better eye out for the self-selection bug. Idzyn seems to be having a similar experience, but with a different workaround. So, if you solve this issue, I suspect you'll eliminate user complaints of labels not sticking:

  • Unfortunately my theory does not completely describe the issue. I just restarted Gmail from a session that was not allowing me to set a due date on a couple emails. That is, it seemed to set the date, but later showed up as having no due date. I tried setting the dates twice. Everything was done from within the emails, not from the Radar.

Andy - I've noticed that this problem with labels sticking always occurs with the due date for me. Never for Status or other labels. Of course, that's the worse one, as emails won't show up in the Radar when due.

  • Andy - it looks like your concern over AIB overriding Gmail data with local copies is correct. I just discovered that AIB actually STRIPPED a due date label I had manually set from my phone's Gmail app. A desktop session of Gmail was open overnight, as well as during the time I changed the due date label on my phone. Here's the sequence of events:

    1. Started a new Gmail desktop session sometime in the past few days.
    2. Today: manually labeled an email with Action / Due Today / Priority 2 on my cell phone.
    3. I moved to my desktop and labeled two different emails with various tags and due dates.
    4. Did some other things in Gmail / AIB.
    5. Noticed that the due date labels in #3 did not take, so I labeled them again.
    6. Did some other things in Gmail / AIB.
    7. Noticed that the due date labels in #5 did not take, so I labeled them again.
    8. Did some other things in Gmail / AIB.
    9. Noticed that the due date labels in #7 did not take, so I restarted Gmail, labeled them again, and saw that they stayed this time.
    10. Notice that the due date label I set on my cell phone in #2 was gone.

Came here to report this dangerous bug. :-)

Hope you can fix it soon.

  • Here's another odd thing that may or may not be related to this bug. Here is a screenshot of an email that you can see by the gmail tags has AIB statuses and due dates, but you can also see that they don't show up in the AIB HUD. Also, even though the email is in my inbox, the "archive" button is greyed out, as if it was not in the inbox.

  • Well what do you know?! I had a task today that I couldn't get into a Project subfolder. I assigned it in the AIB interface, but it wasn't showing up in the Gmail list of tags down below. That's the opposite of what you noticed. This was on a fairly "fresh" load of a Gmail tab. I was going to post it soon, as it contradicts my "only due dates" post from earlier.

I honestly don't know why if finally stuck (seemingly) after x attempts.

AIB team: there's a glitch where AIB and Gmail are simply not in sync some of the time.

After a few weeks of seamless due dates (I think? My trust is challenged.) Today I'm having this issue return: I check an email, change it's due date, move on through my list and then - WHAM! - emails that I set to future dates are returning to "today." • Lisa,

What did Andy say? It's happening to me regularly, perhaps once every several days. Can you let us know the below please?

    - Did you talk with Andy about it today? In his "official answer" above, he acknowledged a potential issue. At no time was it claimed to have been resolved over the past 2 months.

    - In another post, I created a series of repeatable steps that reproduce a problem for me. Based on its nature, I strongly suspect that problem is related to this one. In fact, solving that repeatable problem may completely solve the problem here. Can you PLEASE look here, about half-way down the page, and try to reproduce the issue? I bet it's universal, and not particular to me, so you should be able to replicate it. Here's the post again for reference:
    https://getsatisfaction.com/activeinb...

It's easy to say something is "not being reported by others". Lots of problems don't get reported by multiple people. It's not unusual for 1 or 2 people to report a problem on these forums, even when there's a bug that affects 100% of all installations. Please just try to follow my steps to reproduce the issue. That's a sure fire path towards progress on these bugs.

  • I decided to just copy that post over from the other thread to remove doubt. Here it is:

    Andy,

Here's a more detailed summary of what's happening. I think I can now describe the issue precisely, including how to reproduce the phantom selection issue. Here's a revised list of my steps from the previous post.

    0. Put the following sections in your Radar, to reflect mine: Inbox, Today, Action, Upcoming. Collapse all except Inbox and Today.
    1. Select some items in the Radar that are due today.
    2. Postpone them by changing the date to the future using the selection boxes at the top of the Radar.
    3. Note the emails are still selected. They shouldn't be. See below for my philosophy on this.
    4. Select something else that's due in Today, then de-select it immediately. This causes all selections to clear (including what has been selected in Upcoming). Note that this is not consistent logically. Something was selected in the collapsed Upcoming section. Why would adding to this selection by selecting a Today item clear it after that Today item is de-selected? Nonetheless, this has been my workaround shortcut for clearing something I've postponed. It was faster than scrolling down to Upcoming and de-selecting there. It's critical to do this to reproduce the bug in the next step.
    5. Now, after doing the above, nothing is selected in the Radar. Open an AIB view. I clicked Today from my sidebar. Then, click Inbox from the sidebar. Scroll to the top, or down to the Upcoming section, and notice that the original email has spontaneously re-selected! In fact, I think you can do dozens of other things in Gmail between step #4 and this step #5, and the email will still re-select when you open an AIB view then return to the Inbox. It seems to have a memory - or the selection wasn't "really" cleared using my trick in step #4.

That's a list of this issues. Now my philosophy on this and suggested fixes....

If I postpone a task from the Today section, it appears in the Upcoming section of my Radar and stays selected. I can see some value of the logic that says "it's still in the Radar so it stays selected", however it's now in a different section and that section may be collapsed. I postpone tasks all the time, and I can't figure out a clean way to handle this under the new design. On the previous version of AIB it used to be that the Today and Upcoming sections had separate buttons for effecting changes, so this was a non-issue.

What makes it worse, is that if I postpone a task, I have to then scroll down and open the Upcoming section to deselect the task, every time. Unless you have a better approach, one idea might be to provide a "deselect all" button at the top, so that after making desired changes to a tasks, one can quickly deselect to avoid changing these tasks accidentally in the future. (The workaround shortcut I've been using in step #4 above was clearly in ineffectual attempt to exploit a bug.)

So, I suggest that you do this:

    1. Fix the bug that occurs in steps #4 and #5 in my list above.

    2. Don't keep things selected if a change causes them to move into a collapsed section. It's dangerous, and one shouldn't be intentionally making changes to things not visible - collapsed section or not. There's no human-machine interface difference between "not in the radar" and "in the radar, but in a collapsed section and not visible".

    3. Handle cases where tasks are in view and selected, but no more changes are desired. Provide a quick way to deselect all tasks across all sections of the Radar. Currently there's a lot of scrolling around to deselect, since I can select across multiple sections of the radar, but I must deselect by section.

Thanks for looking at this Andy. This has been a mystery, but I think I've cracked the details now and hope you can fix this without too much trouble.

  • Lisa,

I don't know. I just went and found emails without due dates yesterday. They could have been stripped days or weeks before. I'll keep an eye out and report whether it happens again. When was the fix put in?

  • Hello mx

It was some time ago. Keep an eye out and let me know if it happens again. It isn't being reported by other people at the moment.

  • I’m getting annoyed.
I've started using ActiveInbox the end of 2017. It's been working beautifully and I love it!

Last week it started with this exact bug. I change the due date, it disappears from the list only to pop back again seconds later. I change the due date again and it moves properly to the next day.

    What is the fix?

  • I did one-day last week. Other than that, though, no.

    Hope that's helpful,
    Tracy
