Renaming the general Folders (/P) descriptor

Hi
I seem to have (somehow) managed to rename the /R prefix into a localized name (other than "References"), which makes more sense to me in my native language. "References" is virtually meaningless (I now have the /R tag associated with "Materials" in my native tongue, and it is helpful). Similarly, I would love to rename the "Folders" (the /P prefix) into a localized version of Projects so that when I select it in the drop-down of the radar in the Sort-by menu, I can see a description that makes sense to me. Can I do that?

You can change the prefixes into anything that you want to. Just go to the red envelope at the top of your Gmail and then into Preferences. Click on the left hand side where it says Custom Types and you can change the prefix there. You'll also need to go to Gmail Mail Settings and Labels and change the ones you've already set up in there.

Hi. Thanks. I think I'm aware of this. But I cannot see an option there to rename the descriptor, the _name_ of the prefix, which is used in the UI for interaction everywhere (including the settings themselves). All my projects are already prefixed with P/, which was the default, and I'm happy keeping it like that. (Using the default prefixes has proven to keep things consistent on reinstalls or moving to other browsers/computers etc -- I recall having the prefixes default to factory defaults on another browser once, after I had played around with custom prefixes, which created a mess). I simply want to rename the descriptive name of prefix P/ to be - using English as an example for clarity - "Projects" rather than the default "Lists" (which is not helpful for me - after 6 years I still find "Lists" throwing me off track and I get confused in the UI). Because this is what is displayed in the Sorty By drop-down later on etc. I seem to have managed to rename the descriptor of the /R tag to another word, somehow, but I cannot find how I did that, neither can I find a way to do the same for P/.

I also tried to reinterpret your answer as simply needing to create a new entry for the already existing P/ with a new name, but that, predictably and understandably, gave me an error.

  • I’m still wondering
Hi, I thought I'd follow up on this.
So is there any way for the user to change that word, "Folder", (used in plural as "Folders" in the settings) either to a localized word or simply "Projects". This is significant, as this specific 'type' as it is called in AIB is what shows up in the left sorting column in the tasks view and above a specific task/email as the main means of sorting things into groups. Creating a new custom type or changing the prefix will do nothing to this end as it will get buried under the rest of the stuff, Contexts, References, Custom Type 1, Custom Type 2. If you say no, I'll settle with that. Until then, I'm still curious if I could do that. It would increase the usability of the sorting option in the tasks view a lot, significantly.
