I’m frustrated

"Relation query was attempted when disallowed." when loading AIR plugins in Ableton Live

I just got my Code 61 controller the other day, which came with Hybrid 3, Loom, Velvet 2, DB-33, and Mini Grand. Tried to load them up in Live 9 Lite, and I'm presented with the error, "Relation query was attempted when disallowed." What?

I've tried reinstalling Hybrid 3 so far, and it hasn't helped at all. Tried reopening Live, rescanning for plugins, nothing works. They are registered with iLok.

  • Hi Trevin,

Thanks for posting. This isn't an error message I've ever heard of before.

Can you please provide me with your full system specs? Does this error happen in another DAW? Can you please post a screenshot of the error? When does the error message occur?

I'm not sure why my system specs would help, but my cpu is a 3.5 GHZ AMD FX-6300, with 8GB of ram and Windows 10 Pro, graphics card is an EVGA GTX 660 SC-SIG2, Asus M5a97 LE R2.0 motherboard, 5TB of internal storage. Audio goes out through a PreSonus Audiobox USb. I haven't had it occur in any other daws, as I don't own any other daws. The error occurs when I try to load the plugins onto a track, or rescan for them. Here's a screenshot:

Yesterday I tried unregistering Hybrid from my computer, then rescanning, but when I entered my serial number I was told that I had reached the maximum number of activations. So, I tried reactivating it from the iLok program, and it seemed to work. However, when I tried to rescan to get the other plugins working, Hybrid went back to showing me the same error.

  • I found this topic after searching for the "Relation query was attempted when disallowed." in Google.

I get the same error when trying to add a VST plugin to an Ableton Live track in the following cases :
    - AIR plugins (Hybrid, Loom, Vacuum Pro, Velvet, AIRChorus, ...)
    - UVI plugins (Falcon, SparkVerb, and UVI Workstation won't authorize some of my libraries anymore both as a VST and standalone)

What these cases have in common is that they are all iLok protected, worked fine yesterday, and only started acting up after I added 2 new UVI library licenses this morning (increasing my iLok activation count from 24 to 26).

I first thought it was related to an iLok license manager update I ignored (I was on version 3.0.1), but no change after upgrading to version 3.0.3.

Bizarrely, I do not have any problems with the latest iLok protected plugin I installed (the 27th activation on my system) : Sonivox EightyEight Ensemble works fine.

    My system :
    - Windows 8.1
    - Ableton Live Suite 9.6.2 64-bit
    - iLok licenses are stored on the computer, I don't have a USB dongle

I think I'll also try to contact UVI's support, since their products seem to be affected by the same issue as my AIR plugins.

  • Having the same issue over here with FL Studio 12.3 and Xpand!2. Specs for me are Intel i7 6700k @4.2GHz, Windows 10 Professional, AMD Radeon R7 370, an SSD for the OS and an HDD where the rest is stored. iLok licenses are stored on the PC.

By moving the license from computer to the key it solved the problem . I think you have to get feedback from ilok .

I think I may have found a temporary solution.

Go into iLok, deactivate any malfunctioning licenses from your computer so they go back to your account. Then, open up your daw, unload and rescan the plugins(In Live, this is alt+rescan, or turning on and off the custom plugin directory). When the iLok plugins come up, they'll ask you to register them, but don't. Instead, go to iLok, find the plugin, and reactivate it to your computer. The registration screen will go away, and the error shouldn't come up. Repeat this process for any other plugins, and then you should be able to use them.

The only issue is that if you unload+rescan these plugins again, it will start throwing up the relation query error again. So just make sure your DAW's only scanning for new plugins, or just close it while you install plugins.

I found a solution. The problem appeared after install the H910 Harmonizer demo. Steps:
    1) Deactivate all iLok licenses on your computer using the iLok License Manager.
    2) Reescan for your plugins into your DAW.
    3) The plugin will ask for activation (in the reescan process).
    4) Activate again the plugin through the iLok License Manager, don't click anything in the plugin activation window. After you do the activation using iLok LM, the plugin activation window will disappear.

Don't activate all plugins at same time. Do it one by one when the activation windows pop up.

    • Hi Warmonger. I've just checked the comments over on the KVR Audio forum posts and it seems like this problem is affecting a good number of us. It started a couple of days ago.It seems to be linked to a recent Windows update that is clashing with existing linkages with authorisation programmes such as iLok. It seems to be affecting licenses saved in iLok on hard disc and doesn't seem to affect licenses held on the physical iLok dongles. It's affecting Eventide products, Soundtoys products, UVI products, Air Music Tech products, anything in fact that requires ILok authorisation. People are being told they don't have licenses for products that they have spent good money purchasing. I myself appear to have 'lost' Transfuser and Loom from my current iLok list. The general feeling at the moment is avoid installing anything requiring iLok authorisation until the mess is sorted out. Fixes posted on the internet are well intentioned but we all deserve better support from the developers/ILok people during this crisis. They need to work together to give us users an officially released solution to this issue and provide us with some sort of explanation as to how it has occurred. I am going to mail iLok/Air Music Tech/UVI to add my voice to making them aware that there is a BIG problem out there at the moment. It would be wonderful if in the future some/all of these developers could avoid iLok/PACE type authorisation systems. For the moment I'm not going to attempt any temporary fix. I will wait to see what is the outcome of these developers becoming aware of this wide ranging problem once they return to work this week. Whilst I'm waiting it'll be a good opportunity to begin to figure out how to use Sugar Bytes Obscurium. Good Luck with your music.
    • Thanks for helping out, Josue! :)

  • I’m sad,annxious,confused and frustrated!!!
    Same problem here.

I'm running Reaper 5.22 (64-bit) in Windows 8.1 on an Intel i5 @1.7-2.4 GHz laptop with 8GB RAM.
I purchased Strike 2 yesterday. Activated the license on ILok on my PC. Registered it and used it successfully in Reaper. BUT when I tried to load Hybrid3 I received an error message. I then did a rescan of Reaper's VST directory . During the scan I received the ';Relation query....' error message for Hybrid3, Loom, Eventide Blackhole, UVI Relayer, Soundtoys Crystalliser 5. I received the error message 'User privileges insufficient to start a low level' driver' when the scan encountered Transfuser. I then tried to load UVI Workstation into Reaper to find another error message informing me that none of my seven sample libraries was licensed!!!

I checked my iLok account to find that all of these plugins mentioned above were still listed and designated as having activated license status - with two exceptions - Loom and Transfuser - which were no longer listed in the iLok account.
So at the moment I have gained one plugin but lost access to twelve others (total cost ~£500).

I've never had a problem with any of my three Air Music products nor the UVI sample libraries until now. I had looked forward to a good night with the music but for hours have not been able to concentrate on anything other than sorting this mess out.I'm not at all pleased. I hope Air Music Technology will be sympathetic with me if I have to my copies of Loom and Transfuser relicensed, otherwise it will be the last purchase that I ever make from them.

I will contact UVI and iLok separately.

  • I got same issue recently both in Ableton and in VIP. Suddenly all AIR plugins stopped working.

I didn't make any system changes recently, apart from installing Eventide Blackhole (iLok protected).

  • I'm experiencing similar issues.
A couple of days ago I installed the EastWest Play engine (Composer Cloud trial), that had me update iLok and reboot my PC.
After this, EW Play worked fine but Hybrid stopped working.
Found this thread, tested deactivating Hybrid and reactivating it again, worked wonders but now EW Play stopped working.
Deactivated EW Play and activated it again, now that works but Hybrid not...
Can't have em both working... ><

  • I’m happy
Quick update, chaning the Pace service to Automatic(Delayed start) seems to have fixed it. I tried setting it yesterday, and today when I opened up Live, I didn't get any errors about software not running. Checked, all the plugins appear in the browser and the service was running..

  • Hello, ilok confirmed this was an issue with their service this should now be resolved for all users with the latest settings update they have pushed out to users. If your still having a problem their support can help reset this for you.
    • I had 12 plugins affected by this iLok problem. The iLok fix restored 10 of them but due to the problems Transfuser and Loom had been removed from the list of authorised licenses in the iLok Manager. Which means that these were not restored by the fix. I have communicated this to Alex? at Air Music Tech and my link to Loom was recently restored - but he seems to have forgotten Transfuser - so I'll be contacting him again later today. Fingers crossed!
