I’m confused

Content not found in Strike 2 / Velvet 2 when stored on network drive

Hi there, I'm having a real issue with certain AIR instruments (namely Strike 2 and Velvet 2) recognising content saved to a remote Synology NAS where I store all my samples and libraries on. I've trawled through the existing threads on this site and can't find any resolution.

The strangest thing is it only happens to some of the instruments in the Air Expansion Pack and I can't find any reason why some work and some don't. For example, I'll copy the entire Structure and Transfuser library file-by-file to an equivalent folder on my NAS (mounted using AFP, works absolutely fine in the likes of Kontakt and Reaper) and it works fine when I tell the VST to scan the remote drive for content. If I do the same with Strike and Velvet, it constantly tells me it can't find the content. If I point it BACK to the local drive, it's absolutely fine. How can that be the case? Why can't Strike / Velvet read this from an external / remote drive?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Will,

    Thanks for posting.

Strike, Velvet, as well as the entire Instrument Expansion Pack will work best when stored directly on your computer's internal drive. We don't recommend storing your software and plugins on an external or remote drive, as this can cause a lot of problems. All of the files should be placed within the same folder, too.

Can you please provide me with your full system specs, as well as the DAW(s) you're using? Does this occur within multiple DAWs?

  • Hi Bill,

Thanks for getting back to me. I can't say I understand why that would be the case. The core plug-in files, presets and any other configuration files DO reside on the local storage (I have experimented with moving all files but that hasn't worked either). However, I want to keep the .big content files on the network storage, as a combined 60GB of content on an older laptop with a single HDD is not a particularly efficient setup when I have a NAS with more than enough capacity.

Like I say, what confuses me is that some AIR plugins work perfectly in this way and I have to say, Native Instruments plugins such as Kontakt and Battery (as examples of other content-heavy applications) work perfectly in this configuration too.

That said, my full specs are:

    - Model: MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011)
    - System: OS X 10.11.6 (El Capitan)
    - Processor: 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    - Memory: 8GB 1333 MHz DDR
    - Local Storage: 750GB SATA HDD
    - Network Storage: 2TB SATA HDD (residing on a Synology DS115J)
    - DAW: Reaper v5.26 (have also tested on Pro Tools 10 and Logic Pro X; same problem)

Is there any chance an update might fix this in the future?
