[MPCX] List Editor Editing

I am checking out this article, http://akaipro.com/support/kb/article..., and I am looking at the MPCX screen, then I come across the MPC2.0 screen.

I would like to have the bars on the fields length, velocity and value too. I would like to be able to use touch to horizontally change the content in those fields, AND for the other fields as well. (Similar to how the step sequencer does it vertically.) That would speed things up considerably!

Right now, the list editor on the MPCX is among the most cumbersome screens, even though it historically and sensibly should be the simplest one. Adding an event is, tap, tap or scroll, tap or scroll, and tap... for one single event.

  • I'd settle for just being to do basic things in the list editor... Insert cc messages manually, automate multiple pads at the same time, manually insert and edit automation parameters etc. The stuff that most $100 sequencers can do but somehow the flagship akai offering can't.

  • Exactly because it is not a $100 sequencer, is the reason why you should not settle for less than awesome. Obviously MIDI CC is a must. So is being able to add a range of MIDI Events over some chosen time frame.

  • Hey everybody,

    Thanks for posting!

You can insert MIDI CC and automation parameters in List Edit with the Insert button at the bottom of the display and choosing the parameter you want.

For example, if I wanted to add MIDI CC 3 to my sequence, I would open List Edit, select Insert, select Track Automation in the Type field, and select CC 3 in the Parameter field.

Keep in mind that some MIDI CC values are labeled by number (CC 3, CC 9, etc.) while others are labeled with their standard function (Volume = CC 7, Pan = CC 10, etc.). The following link will be a useful reference to match MIDI CC values to their standard functions:

That said, if you have an idea for the MPC workflow that you would like to share, be sure to submit it through the MPC 2 Software's built-in feedback module. The feedback module is represented by a smiley icon at the lower right side of the software next to the browser icons. This information goes directly to the Akai team for consideration!

If you need an alternative method of submitting feedback, you may use the following links:

MPC - Submit a Feature Request

MPC - Submit a Bug Report

    Thanks for your feedback!

This shows though, how cumbersome the list editor currently is.

    1. Tap Insert.
2a. Tap Type and select then re-focus to wheel.
    2b. Double tap Type field.
    3. Scroll and select Track Automation.
4a. Tap Parameter and select and re-focus to wheel.
    4b. Double tap Parameter field.
    5. Scroll and select CC 3
    6. Some tap to execute.

With a couple of more fields on the screen and one could insert a MIDI CC 3 value from 0 to 127 over an 8 bar range, at current resolution, with say, 20 taps?

Currently, such a process would take 6 taps times the 128 (0 to 127) events. That's more than a staggering 700 taps. Not a trivial effort.

This could be said to be an extreme example, of course, but imagine some typical 16 events over a bar, that amounts to almost 100 taps, where the same screen would still take only about 20% of that effort.

The MPCX desperately needs the ability to at least be able to insert a series (from value A to value B) of values over a range (from position A to position B) of time, using the insert dialog already discussed.

Being able to automate multiple pads at once is essential too - at the moment if you have all or a group of pads selected it simply does nothing at all!

P.s. I will check the cc stuff but I don't recall that being added... Can you do ranges like on the 4000 too? E.g select 1.1.1 to 9.1.1 + cc100 + values 0-127 with a linear curve? Also last I looked you couldn't edit very easily e.g. you couldn't change from cc100 to cc101 if you made a mistake - you have to delete and start again

  • I can see this now - it still needs a lot more functionality as described in my previous post. And it would be a hell of a lots easier if it just listed the cc numbers - I've got 15+ synths and not one of them uses those names for the cc messages. If I need to send cc102 at the moment I basically have to count up to 102 and hope that I landed on the right one!

  • Great points!

I got a pile of devices connected too. I actually have a few 1to4 MIDI Thru boxes that I have to *manually* switch (using buttons on an old MSB 16/20, but nonetheless, I cannot use ALL the machines I got in one project) basically because I cannot use USB MIDI Out Ports on the MPCX.

Meanwhile, back to Earth... but yes I totally agree with you. Editing MIDI is currently a MAJOR drag. Actually, right now it's a total drag. ;)

I think that the insert dialog should have a checkbox to replace all current instances of the type being inserted within the range, so essentially a replace.

Also, you mentioned a linear curve, it would be nice to have the ability to affect that curve, e.g. if it was made quadratic with a user defined exponent, we could make that linear curve convex or concave as needed. Preset curves works too.

That's what I was getting at - the 4000 allows linear, exponential or log curves... I'd be more than happy with that
