2.3 Mania got my inbox going crazy...

Akai Professional's marketing team barely had to say or do anything and there's all sorts of theories about "what features 2.3 is going to contain?" and "when it's gonna drop?"

I personally hope whatever it is it will make most of us happy. My emails from all my favorite Facebook Groups, Twtter accounts, and fourms I subscribe to are coming in heavy with 2.3 topics. Thankfully youtube and Instagram is pretty quiet.

In greater truth, I mostly care about us finally getting PDC and saving our own mixer presets, but I guess that's because I'm very deep into my mixing and sound design skills as a producer, such improvements on the mixer would be greatly appreciated by me and Im hoping others agree with me on this.

I also really want these kids to get their insert sidechain. They are so obsessed with sidechaining. Why I don't know, to me it's a cheap parlor trick, but I guess that's what's trending. I really hope Pete Goodliffe and his engineering team give sidechain to them. I really do....

It would be nice for tighter integration between VIP and MPC software, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Anyway back to making music I go...

  • Not coming from a hip hop or EDM background, I've been intrigued by much of the contention and complaints since I got my LIVE. It seems like too many people want a machine that does EVERYTHING PERFECTLY, and that just ain't gonna happen!

I've always felt that limitations can be good, creatively - like a bandmember, every machine will have its strengths and limitations. Working around the limitations to highlight the strengths is what helps you move forward to create your unique sound.

I am bummed that there's latency in the looper, for example, but okay, I'll use it for ambient sounds, and anyway it's not always a bad thing to have someone in the band who's a little bit behind the beat..... that slapback sound is thick.
    • Right! Like there is a reason why most professional guitarists I personally know and work with owns a minimum of of a dozen guitarists. Every professional drummer I work with owns a minimum 8 snares and lots of cymbals. Most engineers I know have a vast collection of microphones, most of my production peers have more than one sampler and multiple synths.

      Why?

Because no one machine can do it all. I sample all my stereo samples in my ASR-X-Pro or ASR-10 because they have a certain rich warm sound that my MPC X can't reproduce no matter what plugin you apply to it. But I sure as hell control my other samplers from my MPC X, because none of them can sequence like the MPC X.

All devices have their strengths and weaknessess, the thing that makes a great producer is knowing your gear and figuring out ways to circumvent those challenging situations.

Like a few weeks ago in the sidechain post I was litterally attacked by ageists for giving them an old school solution to sidechaining that would perform and sound much better than Akai Pro's internal effects. No disrespect to AP, but their built-in effects are not so great or usuable to anyone with a developed ear.

  • Gentlemen,

Yes, v2.3 is on the horizon and I can't wait to get to know it! Shouldn't be long now...

  • If we could use Clip Launch mode together with drum programs and keygroups, Live would be almost perfect for me.
But then I would want a built in synth, an arpeggiator, a good stereo reverb, a good resonator and a resonating phaser and...
Yes, i would want a dream machine.
You are right, perfection doesn't exist in this world.
And I admit I am happy with my MPC Live.
