Advance Pads Trigger Plugin Parameter Changes - Behavior Unwanted

I am using my Advance 49 with VIP 3.1 in stand-alone mode. Everything is working fine except certain pads seem to be sending messages that change parameters on the instruments I am playing on the main keyboard. For example, I have the Velvet plugin active playing an Electric Piano, I have the pads set-up to play a different instrument on a different midi channel, but hitting the fourth pad triggers the 'Pickup Volume' parameter in the Velvet plugin, setting it to an inaudible volume. Other pads trigger other unwanted parameter changes. I have read that sending CC messages from pads is not an option, so how is this happening? I cannot find any setting that seems related to this functionality. This is making the pads effectively useless to me... please help.

  • Hey Lincoln,

    Thanks for posting!

Sorry you're having some trouble with that! I tried recreating what you're experiencing here on my end but I wasn't able to do so.

I used a Multi in VIP that had Velvet in the first slot set to respond to MIDI channel 1 and another plugin (I used Vacuum Pro) in the second slot set to respond to MIDI channel 2. As you mentioned, the pads will send note values and trigger MIDI notes when the Advance is in MIDI mode (hold Shift and press Control/MIDI). Be sure to use MIDI mode when you want to trigger notes as the pads will perform different actions in VIP depending on what mode you're in (Control, MIDI, or Multi) such as muting multi slots and playing chords that you've assigned with the Learn function.

If you want to check the MIDI output of the Advance, you can try using MIDI monitoring software. A MIDI monitor will show you all the incoming data from any MIDI controllers or MIDI interfaces that you have connected to your computer.

For testing MIDI devices on PC:
    Download MIDI-OX

This video will get you set up quickly for MIDI input monitoring in MIDI-OX:
    Monitoring MIDI Input with MIDI-OX

For testing MIDI devices on Mac:
    Download snoize: MIDI Monitor

Select the Advance as a MIDI input source in the monitor and send some data with its keys and pads. You should see note on/off data for both - if that's what you're seeing, everything sounds like it's working correctly. Try it and let me know how it works out!

  • Hello Nick, Thanks for your reply. I have tested the pads in "midi" mode and "control" mode. It seems in midi mode the unexpected trigging does not occur, but in control mode which is what I want because i'm using the chord progression functionality, it sends messages like "breath control" that have unwanted side effects on the plugin parameters. I cannot seem to find any setting that will stop this behavior. I am close to giving up on VIP, I have spent too much time trying to solve problems and not enough time making music. I have attached a screenshot of the midi data.

    Thank you for your help!

  • Hey Lincoln,

I see that the values for breath control are coming from a different port (port 3). You don't need to select this port in VIP - only port 1 is necessary. Try selecting only port 1 as the active MIDI input in VIP's Audio/MIDI Settings menu like in the image below and let me know if you're still having trouble:

  • Lincoln Barr, Windows or OSX? This is similar issue that I have on Windows. This problem has not appeared on Mac OS yet.
