Advance VIP + Ableton Live : impossible to switch tracks !??

Hi !

I just bought an Akai Advance 61 and I can't configure it well in Ableton Live 9.7 with multiple instances :

I have for examples 2 instances of VIP (with different sounds) on 2 tracks on Live.

If I switch from track 1 to track 2, I can play the sound of VIP 2, but the controllers are modifying the parameters of VIP 1. Really weird.

I tried another way : I switched the instance of VIP from the Main menu on the Akai Advance. I can now control the parameters of the VIP I want but it doesn't switch the track in Ableton. So, I can can control the parameters of the sound I want, but can't play it !!!!

The only way I found, it is changing both the Track in Ableton and the sound in the Advance. It is slow and really not intuitive, especially with a lots of tracks.

Please help, what I did wrong ? I spent already a lots of times on it !

  • Hey sam,

    Thanks for posting!

You're correct - It is important to be sure to open the correct instance of VIP (per track) so that you do not unintentionally edit the wrong patch.

Select the track that has the instance of VIP you want to edit and click the plug-in edit button (button with the wrench icon) in Ableton to edit the parameters. As you mentioned, once you have the track selected, you can use the controls on the Advance itself to edit VIP parameters. Sounds like you're doing it correctly!

Please let me know if you have any additional questions!

  • Thanks Nick for your answer.

Unfortunatly, it is really not intuitive and it is slow. I need to select twice the sound I want to use (in Live then in VIP) to edit it with the Advance.

Do you plan to update VIP or Advance to be able to change the sound just in one place ?

  • It is a matter of having the correct track selected in Ableton as the Advance will display the currently selected and active instance of VIP. I did a little experimenting here to see how I could achieve this and here is what I found:

The Advance's controls can be toggled to control parameters in your Multi (in VIP) or MIDI parameters in your DAW. By mapping Arm Session Recording and the Track Title Bar to one of the Advance's buttons in MIDI mode, I was able to swap between the two instances of VIP and control them individually (or together for that matter) as necessary. Although this does not change the Multi view on the Advance itself, it will get you most of the way there as you will not have to go into the software to change tracks and hear the different patches you are using.

If you would like to do this, the first thing we want to do is set the buttons to which you wish to map to momentary rather than toggle. This way, when you press the button it will send a momentary on/off message rather than toggling on with one press and off with a second press.

Enter MIDI control mode by first holding Shift and pressing Control/MIDI. While continuing to hold Shift, press the Data Dial to enter the control configuration screen. At first, you will be presented with the encoder edit screen. To get to the button edit screen, continue holding Shift and press the Control/MIDI button once more. You will now see representations of each button in the display as well as the editable parameters above them. You can push each individual button to select them and edit their behavior. Use the Advance's directional cursor and Data Dial to change parameters and set the buttons you will use to momentary.

Now that we've done that, we can easily map these buttons to parameters in Ableton. First, make sure the Advance is in MIDI mode (not controlling VIP) by holding Shift and pressing Control/MIDI. Enter MIDI mapping mode in Ableton by selecting the MIDI button in the top right corner. Parameters that are highlighted in blue can be assigned to controls on the Advance. Click the Track Title Bar in Ableton and press the button on the Advance that you want to associate with it. Multiple parameters can be mapped to one button so let's also click Arm Session Recording in Ableton and press that same button you chose for the Track Title Bar. Repeat this process for all other tracks that you would like to alternate between. When you have finished, exit MIDI mapping mode.

Now. when the Advance is in MIDI mode, pressing the buttons you mapped will serve two purposes - one, it will select the track you're working with and two, it will arm or disarm the track. You will be able to hear any tracks that are armed. Not a perfect solution but this should help you a bit!

Sorry for the long-winded explanation but I wanted to let you know that this was a possibility! To that point, I will be happy to submit a feature request regarding some additional DAW control features for the Advance series.

I hope this helps you. Please let me know if you have any questions!

  • Hi Nick,

Thank you so much for this very complete answer !!! It really helped me to understand more the Advance, the midi mapping functions with ableton, and I can change the tracks directly from the Keyboard now : it is really cool.

But, it doesn't solve my problem. I already could do that with my Albeton Push. The problem, when I switch the tracks like this, I can play with the sound of the track but can't edit it with the knobs. The knobs are still connected to the other track. To change it, we need to go also in the MAIN/PAGE 2 of the Advance and select the sound. It is complex, not intuitive and long.

It would be really much more productive to be able to change everything in one place (when I arm a track from Advance or DAW, I can play & edit the sound at the same time). I think this feature is really useful for every composers and it would be great if you could submit a request.

Thank you very much for your time !

  • Good, I'm glad that was helpful! I can certainly pass that along to the development team for you.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the Advance!

  • Thanks Nick !

I have 2 more questions but I don't know if I am in the good topic :

    - Do you know why some VSTi plugins have a very low volume ? (Eighty Eight for example). I tried to push the internal volume in both the plugin and VIP but it is not enough. I don't have this problem with VSTi like Diva for example.

    - When do you plan to support Arturia VSTi ?

  • Some plugins may have lower output volume just like some electronic instruments have hotter outputs than others. As Eight-Eight is a piano plugin, it simulates the dynamacy of an acoustic piano. Diva, on the other hand, emulates analog synthesizers so it stands to reason that the output of that plugin will be a bit hotter. On a personal note, Diva is actually one of my favorite plugins and I can say with confidence that its output is the loudest of any plugin I use regularly. I routinely find myself turning my Diva tracks down to balance it with the other instruments - still love it but just some food for thought!

As far as the Arturia VST you referenced, which specifically is it? For your reference, the following article outlines the VSTs that are supported with maps in VIP:

  • I loaded in Live 2 instances of Eight-Eight : one in VIP and one alone. There is a big difference of volume (maybe 4 decibels). But it was due to the internal mixer of VIP. If I push the volume in VIP, I have quite the same volume, so it is ok.

I agree with Diva, this synth is fantastic and I also love it.

About Arturia, I own the V collection and these synth doesn't load or crash VIP :
    - Wurli V2
    - Matrix 12 V2
    - Piano V
    - SEM V2
    - Stage 73 V
    - Synthclavier V

For the others, I can load it but the presets mapping doesn't work (the control mapping looks quite ok but not very useful because mapped weirdly).

  • hi,

is this part changed in the meantime ?

I experience the same problem and it would be a reason for me to sell my advance, i have push, so i record arm from push, and shouldnt be changing this on the advance.

I also own komplete, and this is no probleme with komplete.
If i select a 2nd komplete instance it dus map the whole device and display to it.
Not so with the advance and vip software...
