Akai MPC Element working as MIDI slave conecting to Boss RC300 looper - is it possible?

I'm thinking of buying MPC Element to use it like a drum machine connected to Boss RC300 looper which can work only like a midi master. So MPC would be a slave... Is it possible?

  • Hello Dariusz,

    Thanks for posting!

The MPC Element can send MIDI with its MIDI output port (you will need to use a 1/8" MIDI adapter) but it does not have a MIDI input port so it cannot be used as a slave unit from a master device.

You may be interested in the MPC Studio series as these controllers have both MIDI input and output ports so they can receive MIDI data.

  • Hello Nick,

Thank you for the reply. I'm a little bit confused because on the Akai webpage in an MPC Element's description is written:

    MIDI I/O

MIDI inputs: 5-pin DIN x 1 via TRS to MIDI breakout cable (included)
MIDI outputs: 5-pin DIN x 1 via TRS to MIDI breakout cable (included)
    Standard accessories: Operator's manual
TRS to MIDI breakout cable x2 (Included)

What does it mean? Is it a special MIDI input which cannot be used like a regular MIDI in ?

  • Apologies Dariusz,

You are correct the Element does have a MIDI input and it is located on the left side of the unit. Please excuse me for that one - haven't worked with an Element in a while!

Now, how do you plan on using the Element to receive MIDI from the RC300? If you want to send MIDI data from the RC300 to the Element then from the Element to your computer via USB you're good to go! Let me know if you had another configuration in mind and I'll be happy to help you.

  • Hello Nick,

Thank you very much much for the reply. I'd like to use Element like a drum machine. Boss RC300 has its own drums but the sound quality is below my expectations so I decided to use a simple sampler instead of this. I plan to use RC300 in a normal way - like a looper. I'd like to get possbility to start/stop a drum saquence on Element and to synchronise the tempo on both devices.
The problem is that RC300 can work only like a MIDI master. So I want to use Element like a MIDI slave. RC can send start/stop, tempo and control change messages. And it'll be great if the Element can recognize those MIDI data.

  • The Element can receive those types of messages! You will, however, need to route your MIDI data to a computer through USB as the Element's MIDI Out does not function as a MIDI Thru. With that in mind, you can certainly still send the MIDI data from the computer back out to external MIDI gear via software for further processing.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you very much for the reply! I have one more question. What should I do to download and register MPC Essentials software if I buy a second hand Akai Element. I mean what to do if Essentials software has been already downloaded and registered by previous owner.

  • No problem!

If you run into trouble with registration a technical support representative will be happy to help you clear registrations and get you on the right track!

Software authorization claims are not handled here on the forum but I can point you in the right direction! Here are a couple of options that you could choose from:

    • Submit a Software Authorization Assistance inquiry with our Technical Support team by logging onto the Akai Pro Support page. Select Software Authorization Assistance from the drop down menu.

    or

    • For quicker support, call your nearest Support Office.
