Akai MPX16 *Bugs which need fixing*

Okay, so I got the MPX16 and am already considering returning it to sweetwater before the 30 day refund period expires. There is quite a gap between what I was expecting and what I experienced with it. That being said, I have gathered up all of what I would consider the major bugs which would need addressing (and soon) in order to make this product successful.

1. There really needs to be an option to "preview" a sample after you record it. How are you supposed to know whether to save or discard if you can't hear what you just recorded?

2. The choke grouping on the loop trigger mode glitches out and doesn't work as it should. Hitting a looping pad in the same choke group as another looping pad makes them stutter until you turn one off. It should just cut off one loop to begin playing the other loop.

3. Kits need to remember the trigger mode assigned to a sample, sometimes when reloading kits the trigger mode is different than when it is saved

4.Hitting the "edit sample button" rather than bringing up the current sample selected brings up the list of samples which seems odd to me. Furthermore the discard and extract functions don't seem to be working properly either.

5.This isn't so much a bug but definitely a design flaw of sorts. There should really be a way to initiate sample recording without having to hit the (quite loud) select button. The button press is awkward and samples from the mic will have that click in the beginning. Being able to hit the "record sample" button twice or after arming record would work much better.

6. Entering "sample record" mode stops all samples currently playing. I think that while this in some ways makes sense, users should be able to let loops continue playing while recording new samples. It would make the whole process much more fluid and less jerky.

I am not the first one to mention these bugs or problems. But they are all things that need to be fixed big time. The very functionality of the MPX16 is being hampered by the current bugs. I want to keep the MPX and use it, because I actually love how it looks and feels.

  • I agree with all of these... this thing came out before it was ready... why I do not know. The editor still hasn't been released!

My two cents, I'd expect one or two of these to be addressed.

The biggest things for me in order to justify keeping it.

    1. Loop choke groups

    2. Sample preview

C'mon guys. I don't know if it's like a team of people who make the updates or one guy or perhaps a cat in a cardboard box but let's see if we can get this done then.

You forgot a bug: when a loop is playing, if it is stopped at the same time as or shortly before another loop is started (by pressing both pads at the same time) the first loop will play until the end of the sample instead of stopping immediately. I have only noticed this problem with external samples. Both loops have choke group off.

The first report of the bug:

  • Point number 6 is what's missing the most for me...kills the spontaneity and improvisational potential of the mpx16.

    6. Entering "sample record" mode stops all samples currently playing. I think that while this in some ways makes sense, users should be able to let loops continue playing while recording new samples. It would make the whole process much more fluid and less jerky.

  • Both features should be available:
a sample record mode with a proper sample editor with sample playback, waveform display, volume adjustment, timestretch, autochop...
and a loop recorder for overdubbing.

  • i just link my bug list here, so the bugs are (hopefully) completely covered now.

-according to Dan, all reported bugs are forwarded to devs.

  • Calvin, could you add "wrong pad being triggered" to your list of bugs
    I reported that bug here:
    http://community.akaipro.com/akai_pro...
but the "problem" I reported has been changed to a "question" and has been tagged as "answered".
I am not the only one to have that problem. The others have referred to it as "wrong trigger" or say that the MPX16 is "blending samples".
If the bug is not identified and listed with the other bugs I don't think it will ever be fixed.

  • Possibly the Akai dev team's hidden agenda could be to 'divvy up' certain features (or limitations) between the MPX16 and other similar Inmusic brand products?
I assume it's quite likely as Akai have apparently reneged on providing the expected MPX16 File Loader software.
It will be interesting to see how the new Alesis SampleRack & Pad Pro compare with the MPX16's current limitations and if they have Kit/sample loading software included.

The situation is not looking good but let's not jump to conclusions. What we should do for now is gather all the bugs and problems we have found into one single list and request Akai to fix them.

We gathered already, and weeks ago, Dan confirmed, that all reported bugs are forwarded to devs and they are working on it.
But now I get annoyed, that there is only chatter from akai about the fileloader (which now suddenly is only a converter) .
The update is prior but there is no more word about it.
So I ask for a timeline, when the update will be released, to know, when the device will finally work flawlessly.

  • I would also like a time estimate for the update release and if possible I would like this wrong trigger bug to be fixed some day. But I don't think this bug has been forwarded to the developers because it is not considered to be a bug. It is considered to be an "answered question"

  • Samples do not trigger correctly at all. The first few milliseconds are simply missing! Goodbye transient attacks!

Does no-one notice this? It's the first thing I noticed when I loaded my own samples in it...

  • Thanks for the comparisons guys - it'll be a damn pita having to insert about 10ms of silence at the start of most percussion samples to correct the problem.

Dan, can you find out and let us know why the MPX16 'Sample Start' point can be moved forward by up to 1000 milliseconds, but the first 10 ms (approx) of many samples is 'missing' at the '000' setting (as demoed).
If anyone wants to check this out, you can download 2 versions of a snare drum sample from here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/o1lcexthjf... One is unmodified and the other has 15ms of silence added at the start. Just load them into a kit, and as you increase the Sample Start point of the modified sample, there is an improved dynamic response at about +3ms (equivalent to 12ms of silence before sample start) when triggered from a mesh drum pad via midi.

As the original drum sample is lacking any real dynamic velocity response, it's fair to assume the MPX16 was not intended to play normal percussion samples properly.
If Akai reprogram the Sample Start '000' setting to coincide with the actual sample starting point, I'll be more than surprised.

this post is from 2014. it's august 2015, any moves toward firmware update with all those needs? i just bought it to use it as a sampler/recorder (standalone) as it "should" also be. Please add MIDI clock in and or out support, and sampling on the fly (what's the use of Line in? if you can't record anything in time, but you always have to adjust it in hours. ok it's a sampler but it also says ), and... re-sampling? where's that akai?
    missing features. yes.

    from your website description:

Record and play back stereo .WAV samples using any SD card (sold separately)
16 velocity-sensitive MPC-style backlit pads for sample-triggering and finger drumming

-->Sample via 1/4-inch (6.3mm) stereo inputs or onboard stereo microphone
it doesn't say sample out of time and with lots of delays betwen recording and playback, so you can spend hourse in putting it all together.

Filter, tune, envelope, and choke grouping on each pad for dynamic performances
Pro-quality sampling and playback with up to 16-bit/48 kHz resolution

MIDI In/Out easily integrates MPX16 into your performance or studio setup
--> well. it has no MIDI clock. no clock? come on!!!! no midi sync feature. well.. how is this supposed to integrate with any sort of REAL MIDI stuff, with midi clocks:

    from wikipedia for you:
MIDI carries event messages that specify notation, pitch and velocity, control signals for parameters such as volume, vibrato, audio panning, cues, and >>>>clock signals<<<<< that set and synchronize tempo between multiple devices. These messages are sent via a MIDI cable to other devices where they control sound generation and other features. This data can also be recorded into a hardware or software device called a sequencer, which can be used to edit the data and to play it back at a later time.[2]:4

Acts as a MIDI Controller or an SD card reader for loading sounds over USB (selectable on startup).. yeah well. to controll a stupid ableton laptop, not a real music machine.

Powered over USB or with the included power supply
Includes MPX File Conversion Utility software (download) for quick conversion and loading of audio files from your computer. --> i bought this NOT to use the computer. i should be informed if it's mandatory! i wouldn't have bought it at all!

very disappointed with you seing it's been such a long time, with all this people complaining and no improvements. please plan a firmware !

Agreed that the lack of movement on any firmware upgrade is shocking. I've hardly used my MPX16 since purchase. What's the point in me keeping it?

Very disappointed in this customer service.

  • Can't agree more with the above comments from fellow (disappointed) AKAI customers.

Come on AKAI, we are not worthless sub-human consumers, we are people who have invested our time, energy, faith and finances in your company, your jobs - at least pay us some respect and respond, preferably with a goddamn useful FIRMWARE UPDATE that addresses the issues detailed. If this is STILL not possible (for whatever reason) then some written advice/work arounds would help and failing even that, how about an apology and expressed commitment to allocate resources/research into fixing the MPX16 in the very near future???

    Something... anything...

  • I’m sad
I wish I could do a "Fix" for you guys with the MPX-16 like I did with the MPX-8! I knew they'd never update that, so I designed the MIDI-Fix. I think they stole my recommendations from the MPX-8 to put into the MPX-16 as it has NONE of those issues.
Most of these bugs are just bad programming, and I'd love to get my hands on the source code but that won't happen ever. Those guys are either fired, dead, or delevering pizza to InMusic now.

    • Hmm missed this comment ages ago!
It'd probably be a bit of both. Looks like some major re-writes to me. I could probably do it, but money would need to be involved because of putting other things/projects aside. I guess a complete FW scrub (after the boot sector/USB stuff) would be the real answer, start from scratch.
Disassembly can take longer than a total re-write, especially if the code is sloppy. Did that once, never again!

If Akai is worth it's salt, open sourcing would be the smart/modern/humane/profitable thing to do! But sadly I think they're still living in the '90's....

From my experiences with the MPX8 and the need to design a MIDI-fix for it, I would never ever ever ever buy an Akai product ever again.

BTW, I just had boards made up for the MPX8 MIDIfix in spare space from other PCB's, and am 3D printing little enclosures for it as so many people have been asking for it but don't know how to solder/fab.
The box has 3.5mm plug on wire coming out one end, a 5 pin DIN5F in the box, so acts in place of a patch cord, and has a 9V battery with an on/off toggle switch so it doesn't die.
