Can I use a single 20-foot USB cable to connect my EIEI Pro interface to my computer?

I am considering moving my EIE Pro interface to about 20 feet away from my computer. Will there be a problem using a single, long USB cable to connect? If NOT, is there an effective way to daisy-chain two USB cables together, with, for example, a powered USB hub in between, or can I just daisy-chain two cables?

Thanks for any answers I may receive! :-)

    Hi,

    Thanks for posting!

USB 2.0 spec maxes out at about 16 feet, so 20 would be pretty unstable. Even 16 feet would make me very nervous. If you need to run a USB cable that long, a powered USB hub could work or at least an Active USB extension cable. As long as you have something to boost the signal at a point in the chain.

Please keep in mind though, this is not recommended use and I cannot guarantee that the EIE will perform as expected at that length. Let us know how it goes though!

Let me know if you have any questions!

    Hi Corey,

Thank you for your prompt reply. :-)

Just for your information and for future readers, I took a chance (patience not being my strong suit!) and I daisy-chained two USB 2 cables, a 16-foot and a four-foot, without a powered USB hub in the chain, and so far everything is working well. NB: I am currently using the EIE Pro to record three mono signals live: one vocal mic and two mics on an acoustic guitar.

For what it's worth (if anything* ) here is my signal chain:
Vocal mic > Presonus Studio Channel > EIE Pro > Computer
Guitar mics (2) > ART PRO MPA II > EIE Pro > Computer

Maybe more relevant in my situation is that I have a pretty current system:
    - Retina 5K iMac w 24GB RAM
    - OS X 10.11.4 (thanks for the relatively timely interface driver LOL)
    - Logic Pro X 10.2

I'm not sure if the system specs would have anything to do with the USB cable-length performance but the more you know...

Perhaps also worth nothing is that I have my MIDI keyboard running 16-feet to the EIE Pro and then through the above mentioned daisy chain without any problems. So altogether there is about 32 feet of cable with three connections between the keyboard and the computer. Mind you I have not tried that while recording other tracks.

Given my meagre recording needs I wouldn't want to assure anyone using more channels and or a different interface that it would work for them, but I am pleased that it is (so far!) working for me. No signal delay, unwanted crackling/interference, etc.

*Sorry for all the details, but I hate coming across a question posed on a forum, suggestions made and then the asker says, "No problem, fixed it!" and doesn't say what they did to fix it and/or if suggestions worked! >:-(
