  • Hey Rory,

    Thanks for posting!

Sorry you're having some trouble with that! I'm having some trouble recreating that here on my end. Zooming in to make the events appear larger helps with selection but I don't really need to zoom in to select a MIDI event on the first bar of a sequence.

I see you're using an MPC X - are you using the MPC in standalone mode or controller mode with the MPC Software? Are the MIDI events you want to select very short? Can you reproduce the same behavior with a longer MIDI note on the first bar?

  • Hi thanks for the response. I’m using standalone mode. (Another issue we can discuss later)..... short midi events cannot be selected..it its long I can select it by touching the tail end. Also I cannot drag a selection to the “1”

  • I have (and still have) what I suspect is the same behaviour/difficulty as you. Specifically when attempting to click a single note (to select or delete it) if the note is small compared to what is visible on screen (renders as a 1 pixel wide rectangle on the channel) it is extremely hard to hit them (unsurprisingly for a touch interface); there is no "margin for error", presumably to avoid ambiguous situations with adjacent notes.

The "obvious" solution is to use the marquee tool, however this only allows selecting rectangular blocks and (for any type of track) the notes you want to pick may not be described as a rectangular block. An example is when you have two musical lines on a single track which overlap in pitch (i.e. the lowest note of the upper line is lower than the highest note of the lower line). As far as I can tell there isn't a sensible way to deal with this.

As for deleting individual, small notes there is one method that works reasonably. You can swipe (horizontal on the screen) along one of the note lanes and notes within that lane that you pass over will be deleted. With a drum program, you can also click the name of the drum pad on the left and all notes in that lane will be selected (at which point clicking on any (now selected) note with the erase tool selected will delete them all.

The final problematic case is when you are using the marquee tool to select a range of notes, including one that falls right at the edge of the screen, or piano roll. In particular, when zooming out you are not allowed to zoom beyond the extents of the sequence length (on the right you can zoom out the extent of the last note from the loop to end). When your sequence is a couple of bars long, zooming out to see everything means that a 32nd note on the first of last slot in the sequence is far enough from the edge of the piano roll that the marquee tool can select it. For a longer sequence it is rendered to small that you need to start drawing the marquee within a pixel of the edge of the selection area (extremely difficult) to include that note in your selection.

If the note near the edge is only at one end of the sequence (i.e. the first note, but there is space after the last note) you can drag your marquee from the end of the sequence toward the beginning (right to left) or visa versa. If you zoom in, to allow the selection of the note more easily you can drag the marquee to one edge of the screen it will scroll, but this is slow and frustrating for long sequences.

What I believe is missing through all this is a way to use the marquee (or a manual/lasso selection tool) to add to an existing selection. In this way you could make non-rectangular selections and select all notes to the full extents of the screen with two selections (one left to right, one right to left). The process necessarily adds additional modality to the UI (which can be confusing) but is really the only solution I can think of.
