Can't connect MPK249 and Surface Book via USB 3.0

Dear all,
This week I bought a MPK246.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to connect the MIDI Controller to my Microsoft Surface Book on a USB 3.0 Port.
If I use a additionally USB 2.0 Hub, the device will be recognized correctly (as MPK246 in Windows Device Manager), but I dont' like this workaround!
All Drivers for Windows, Chipset, USB, ets. are up to date.
MPK246 work fine on other Laptops with USB 2.0.

Is there a solution for this issue?
Thank you and best regards,
Thorsten

  • Hey Thorsten,

    Thanks for posting!

The MPK249 is a class compliant device which means it uses the MIDI drivers that are already on your computer in order to connect. The MPK249 can be connected via both USB 2.0 and 3.0 and we do know that it is functional as you can use it with the 2.0 hub and 2.0 ports on other machines. This sounds like it could be relative to the computer specifically.

I think the following threads in Microsoft's community will be useful to you:

Q: Why won't my USB 3.0 port recognize my device?

    Q: Surface Pro 3 Doesn't Detect USB 3.0 Devices

Q: MIDI USB Class Compliant Devices Do Not Work in Windows 10

    I hope that helps you!

Posting this for everyone who googles this problem in the future. I was never able to find a solution online but eventually figured out how to get my surface book to recognize my mpk249. After connecting the mpk to the surface's usb port, I separate the tablet portion from the keyboard base and then put them back together. The surface then sees the mpk249 and it works fine. I have to do this every time I connect it buts it's not too much hassle.

  • Thank you! I tried this and it did the trick but now after working twice by separating the tablet from keybord surface it would automatically detect the MPK by name as it re attached but its not working just now the third time (day after it first worked) without changing anything on computer or MPK/cable
Is it a hit and miss thing that sometime fails for you too? Have you found any other factors that make a difference?
    Thanks
