I’m tired of trying to fix VIP

Do Advance and VIP still function?

I got an advance in a couple days ago. I downloaded VIP and went through the set up. The first thing i noticed was that presets were loading in from only a couple plugins. Diva and Pianoteq were the only synths with functional presets I could access through the Advance. I have tons of other synths (all of arturia v collection, serum, so on) that have loaded in to VIP, but show no presets. That was the first concern. I probably could fix it... except...

VIP crashes almost every time I use it. In the couple hours I've spent with it, it's crashed 20-30 times. It has made the logic projects I made to demo it unusable - immediate crash every time I load up the project.

Additionally, VIP decides when it does and doesn't want to play a note above middle C. It isn't an issue with the keyboard, it plays above middle C in other plugins. But VIP just doesn't play it.

I've read a lot on this site in the past couple hours about Akai dropping support and abandoning the Advance and VIP. Before I ship this thing back, can anyone help me out? Is there any reason to stick with this product/software and figure it out? or should I just save my time and find something more dependable?

  • Hello,

I don’t know if they’ve dropped support or not but if you check the Advance controllers on the Akai website, the only specs they provide are the physical dimensions.

    That’s never a good sign.

  • Vip software doesn't crash that often on my Windows pc, however the Advance keyboard freezes by switching presets quite often. I need to turn it off and on again.
I use 64 bit. Plugins must be installed on the windows partition.

Regarding support... well, I think they want to sell the last units before they trash the project. Native instruments is becoming a monopoly regarding advanced keyboard controllers.

I use vip heavily, because there is no good alternative (in my eyes). Kontrol got a laughable browser with 3 lines, no sorting, no layering, no multi-tag filtering.
I couldn't check out nektar nektarine yet.

Most maps are outdated, you can check the mapping thread in this forum for some updated versions.

  • Hey Ben,

    Thanks for posting!

Sorry to hear that you're having trouble! Which operating system is your computer running? Which version of VIP did you install? The Advance is still supported and is compatible with the most current Windows and Mac OS. VIP, however, is not supported on Catalina currently. If you are running this macOS, that would cause the program to crash consistently.

VIP will automatically import plugin maps for select developers. This site lists all of the supported plugin maps:

VIP - EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PLUGIN MAPS

If your VSTs are not on this list, then the preset banks will need to be manually imported. Please refer to this guide for the different ways to do this:

VIP - HOW TO BUILD A PLUGIN MAP

Let me know if you have any questions!
