EWI5000 Sound-Editor problems

Hello, it's about the EWI5000 Sound-Editor Synth Mode (screen resolution doesn't help):

- Cutoff cursor : its adjustment range is -100/+100% but its pixel range is 400/533.
Can not set the unit so. Range should be (n*200)...

- Reverb/Chorus/Delay
same problem : adjustment range is 0 to 100% but pixel range is 360 to 270.

- Volume cursor : It goes directly from -90dB to -99dB and the mouse cursor doesn't "stick" to the button when you glide it between 0dB and -100dB.
Seem to come from the button "thickness" (and range too ?).

I didn't check all the buttons but I think they all deserve a test ^^

Sorry for my poor English, you know about French people and foreign langage ^^
Kind regards
Yves Chomat

  • Bonjour!

    Thanks for posting.

I'm not sure I fully understand this. What do you mean by "pixel range"?

If you think it would help, you can upload screenshots here. Click the "Add Image" button at the bottom right.

Are you using Mac or PC? Which version?

Let me know any other details you have and I'll be happy to help!

  • Hello, thanks for your reply^^
I work on PC/W7 Pro but I think the problem comes from the design.

When you program a slide button, you give a min and a max user value (e.g. -100dB, +100dB), the same for the software (e.g. -100, +100 or 0, +1000, ...).

BUT in your page design, if the button can slide only from 156 to 230 (screen pixels) , you'll get only a 74 pixels "range" for the button to cover a 200dB range and it'll be impossible to have a precise dB ajustment (~2.7 dB/pixel).

Maybe the Sound Editor was full-screen-well-designed but it's half screen now and can't be resized...

Now for the "thickness" of the buttons, just play with the Amp/Vol. button : it doesn't follow the mouse cursor. Impossible too to ajust -95dB : no choice between -99 & -90.

There's nothing to change in the program for that, just the design or some TextBoxes to enter the good values.

    Kind regards ^^

    Yves,

you can use the [ctrl] key to give you a fine resolution and the [alt] key (or double click) to take you back to the default value.
You'll have to move the mouse forever with [ctrl] before anything happens, though.

With the normal mouse resolution you cannot even set Pitch-Tuning to "0". You'll have to use one of the methods above which is very odd for such a parameter.

BTW, there is no reason to have a settable resolution between -90dB and -99dB as you cannot hear anything anymore anyway at this level. You can do it anyway by holding the [ctrl] key, though.

The thing that would bother me much more (if I was using the editor) is the fact that there is no usable value display for most parameters. I'm talking about all of the values in percent.

Like Cutoff -21.8%. -21.8% of what?
LFO1 Freq -39.9% of which frequency?

Since the 0% is a hidden / secret value that only the patch programmer knows you cannot even guess anything as it is different for each patch.
What's so secret about a LFO or Cutoff frequency that you cannot make it visible to the user?

  • Hello Ingo !

Thanks a lot and shame on me about the / keys, they work fine.

I took the Volume button as an example. Sure low dB volume values are useless but, as you say, all slider controls are concerned.

I agree with you about the percent (and dB...) values : I only turn or slide buttons and listen to what happens... I'll investigate about the LFO :-)

If any, what do you use instead of the editor ? I'd like to patch a uillean pipe sound, I'll maybe open a new post about this topic...

    Thanks again !

  • I don't use the internal sounds of the EWI5000 at all - so I don't need to edit them either. I only use it as a MIDI controller.

Most of the time I play the EWI-USB, though.

How do you want to "patch a uillean pipe sound" if there are no samples?

  • Well, I just begin with EWI.
I thought I could, with the editor, make a mixof some settings, starting from a patch not too far from the pipe... Sure I'm wrong again^^

I strongly second these questions. Knowing actual values would make editing far more intuitive.

  • In addition to providing informative values for settings, the wish list should include the ability to save and load patches.

On the question of control response (fast, slow) in the editor I have found a way to get more precise settings from the rotary controls. Basically, click and hold on the knob. Then move as far away from the knob as your screen allows. Visualize a circle around the knob and move the cursor accordingly. With practice you can get very small increments on settings such as envelope values. I have the Bernie patches. When I first got them I was totally frustrated that I could not duplicate his values for many parameters. The imaginary "big knob" technique made settings easier.

On using the control key, take into account that it seems to be affected by cursor acceleration settings. If you move slowly it takes a long while for the control to respond. Experiment with short, faster moves. This method is far from perfect, as it is easy to overshoot your aim point, but it can give you finer control.

  • I would like you to begin with the start-up levels from the controller mode including the best possible controlnumbers for every controlparameter for use with:
The internal sounds, a midimodule, or both.
What is the start setting for the parameter knobs, primary and secundary function before twaeking to your own specifications.
I also would like to know which connectors are/are not mutually exclusive.
A list of all the numbers of the control change parameters and what they stand for.
    I have few other questions:
If I use de editor in control mode, do I 1st need to set the ewi in setup mode or not ?
If I use the synth mode do i need to set the ewi on preset or not ??
if I finished editing in setup mode do I need to save to keep it, or can I just go on to performance mode ??
    Thanks in advance...

  • What is the start setting for the parameter knobs, primary and secundary function before twaeking to your own specifications.

Those are not mentioned by Akai. Unfortunately you cannot see the value until you have already changed it. Some of them can be seen in the graphical editor, though.

I also would like to know which connectors are/are not mutually exclusive.

I think all of them can be used at the same time with the exception of the wireless option. That should be in the manual - I think ...

A list of all the numbers of the control change parameters and what they stand for.

There is no MIDI implementation chart from Akai to explain all of the functions. Some of them can be found in the manual - some not.

If I use de editor in control mode, do I 1st need to set the ewi in setup mode or not ?
If I use the synth mode do i need to set the ewi on preset or not ??

When using the editor you don't have to put the EWI into any particular mode.

if I finished editing in setup mode do I need to save to keep it, or can I just go on to performance mode ??

You only need to save edited synth patches. All setup settings will be remembered without any saving.

  • I’m amused
Since I`ve played with the Akai EWI 5000 for a week or so, there are a few improvements to be made to the editor:

-Set-up controlparameters you can save, so you can go back to the last best set-up.
-Best general settings for all Midi windcontroller modules/keyboards online to save to your EWI editor( a good starting point for everybody).
-Better user interface so you can edit, use the synth and the Wireless system at the same time without using different cables..
If i want to edit the internal sounds I need to connect the editor to the EWI, use another USB cable to power-up the wireles system and perhaps midi or headphone cables.
So many cables for a WIRELESS windcontroller !!
    AKAI are you kidding ??

The wireless system is to weak, usually it takes few notes before it kicks in as other people have mentioned before, even when the receiver is right in front of you.

1st it is not a publisher it is an editor, make sure you have installed the program straight from the Akai pro site, the editor only works if you connect your ewi to your PC or laptop.
2nd the editor has 2 pages, the synth pages, and the ewi5000 editor pages, you can change by pushing the synth button to go to the editor.
the editor parameters have different valeus if you use the onboard synth, a software synth or an external synth to get some sounds....

  • Thanks for replying ... I already know how the editor works in both modes. My problem is that in the controler mode I do not see the preset in the left window. In my other pc are shown without problems, being easier to choose the sounds with the mouse of the pc.
But in my laptop that is updated to the same windows 10 as the other, I do not get the sounds.
I'm going to download the editor from the akai page and reinstall them, but I do not think there's anything to see. Thank you
