I’m uncertain

Exporting a Song: Quality changes completely - missing a lot of detail.

When I export a song from the MPC Software for my renaissance to an .mp3 it sounds muffled. There is a lot of low end bass going on which is perfect but a lot of the highs are lost. While recording I use my MPC Headphones and all sounds well. But when I export the file to an mp3 and play it back in iTunes it loses a lot of detail. I don't have a lot of experience with mixing tracks and this is the first time I tried exporting a song. Does anyone have any idea what my be going on? Thanks in advance!

  • The quality will be less but Make sure you select 320 bit rate when you export for best results. Its default set is 160 bit rate.
    hope this helps

Hey, thanks for the response but actually, I initially tried exporting it at the highest bit rate (320 as u mentioned). Also I pushed it up to 96 khz too rather than 44khz. And ended up with the washed out sounding exported mp3. So, the 2nd time I tried it with the setting at 160 and 44khz and ot sounded better on my monitors. But I still am getting a washed out exported mp3. Compared to when I play it in song mode on the Ren into my MPC Headphones.

Not sure exactly what else I can try... What do most people do when they complete a song and export it from the MPC Software? Do they just drop it into an mp3 format and it's good to go or do they put it into maybe a .wav format and use an extra application or DAW to mix it down. I didn't really touch much as far as FX or mixing the tracks individually. I just adjusted the pressure sensitivity of the pads to get the desired "volume" or "sound" when playing it back in the MPC Software.

    Any ideas?

I still love my Renaissance. :o)

  • I export the seperated wav files and load into my daw, studio one. I mix the beat in studio one then bounce to mp3. I did notice the difference in the sound of the mp3 from the mpc. I thought it was just me.

  • Hey Pitchshifter,
Have you tried exporting your song as .wav file? How does that sound? Should be better than mp3. Of course mp3 files will never sound as good as uncompressed audio CD signals or .wav files.

  • TBone... That gives me something to try... using the wav files and exporting them from within reason or reaper or logic. It's worth a try even just for gaining some additional knowledge concerning exporting files. How do you break the files down into .wav files... by track, sequence or what? Thanks!

MRC... The .mp3 at 320 96khz you would think would still sound pretty decent... I had better results at 160 bit 44khz. Maybe my monitors aren't as good as my headphones. They are AKAI Monitors but they aren't anything special. RPM3's... They usually sound good and have a decent bass/volume for a small set of monitors. Thanks!

  • Hi,

Thanks for posting and welcome to the mixing world!

The song may sound a little different when exporting as an MP3 or even WAV, vs. how it sounds in MPC, but it really shouldn't be drastic. As in, if it sounds muffled, there's probably something else at play here.

Have you only used itunes to playback the file? Do you have any EQ settings in iTunes that could be affecting it? If you go into the iTunes preferences > Playback tab make sure to uncheck any options for sound enhancement or EQ. You could also just use something else to playback the file like VLC player.

Another thing to check is whether or not you have any effects on your master bus. in the Export page, there is an option to render the audio with or without these effects and if they're important to your mix you want to make sure that they stay on. If you had these effects on while you're mixing, especially any compression, and then you export your song without it, your mix could sound drastically different. I could imagine, if you were mixing into a heavy limiter and really pushing your kick drum into it, without the limiter your mix might be all kick. Same goes for EQ. If you're boosting the high end with an EQ on your master bus and then take that off, your entire mix will sound dull.

Lastly, I just wanted to check and see if you are listening with the same soundcard you are mixing with. It sounds like you have a renaissance and some RPM3's. Is this the same equipment you play iTunes through or do you switch to a built in soundcard? One of the hardest parts of mixing is making sure the mix sounds just as good through any playback medium. So this could just be a difference worth noting between playback devices. Headphones vs. speakers are certainly part of this as well, but I assume that you listened through both while you were mixing too?

But in the end, everyone is sensitive to their own mixes and would be the first to notice if something sounded different, so maybe this is just the result of an MP3 compression. Mp3 by default is going to sound less dynamic. The first thing that's going to go is your high end and thus, your mix's clarity. I always recommend using WAV files whenever possible, especially at the end of a mix. It's a little bigger, sure, but it's going to give you the most accurate representation of your work.

I hope this helps for now! Let us know how this all goes!

  • Hello Try to mix all tracks inside the software before exporting them as some plugins may not function in right way during exporting process, this will solve the issue for all mixing tool :) , also you may try to exporting them selecting option in real time , :)

I have Totally Solved this Issue "I m getting exactly same sound as i could hear in studio one"

    1. Be sure that all Bus channels faders are turned to zero "don't ever change them the will affect in quality later" instead use VCA fader to adjust sound volume < reason "plugin effect change with changing volume, ex: compressors , reverbs or delays and so on.

2.You may Try to mix all tracks inside the software before exporting them as some plugins may not function in right way during exporting process, this trick will solve the issue for all mixing tool and export the waves exactly in same resolution in clear sound :)

3.Also you may try to exporting them selecting option in real time , :)
