MPC Live - Saving Sequences

Hi
The following bug:

(1) I created a sequence include 1 midi (2x samples) in the "Grid View".
(2) I created also one recorded Audio Track and one Audio Track with a copy of the recorded one.
(3) Then I was going to MAIN-->PEN (by Sequence)-->"SAVE CURRENT SEQUENCES"
(4) After saving I went to PROJECT (tap it) NEW.
(5) After project was closed I loaded an empty project.
(6) After that step I loaded in that new project the sequence I saved.
(7) Following message window popped up:
"Sequence contains Audio Track regions that will be lost."
See below photo ...
(7) I was hitting continue and all Audio Tracks been lost.
(8) Grid View in Midi mode was showing the midi sample entries I edited before but no samples been saved/loaded. So no sound at all ;(

The final question is why is it possible to save sequences but loosing all samples and audio tracks? Sorry but that makes no sense... ;(

@Nick could you check it and put it on the bug list? Thanks in advance.

  • Hello!

I think it's make sense that sequence containing only event data. Like you saving a MIDI file also containing only events data, and no sample material.

Moreover if sequence data would countaining audio, you would loss the ability to simply load up a sequence and try it with different programs if your actual project already have the same program and sample names with different data (Program1, Bounce Track 1, etc)

In other hand, audio tracks are good questions. I think, that would be really bad idea to store large audio data in sequence files, but it depends, maybe it has a value.

    Cheers,
    Barna

  • Hi B.

Well the idea to saving sequence with audio tracks include midi + samples would be to have an opportunity for creating new projects with different sequences very fast ... ;)

But on the end it's not meaningful for my work in the moment ...

But thanks for your response ;)

    Cheers

  • Hey Michael,

    Thanks for posting!

Barnabás is correct here - this is not a bug, as sequences do not contain audio. Sequences are composed of MIDI information entered from the MPC hardware.

Sequences can be saved so that different programs can be applied to them. One helpful way to think about it might be a 'beat template'. For example, you could save a drum pattern as a sequence (again, this is only the MIDI events) and use it in another project with a different drum program so you end up with the same rhythm but with a different timbre. Since it is just MIDI data, you can apply any type of program to it such as a Keygroup or a MIDI program if you wanted to send the sequence to external hardware.

If you're looking to explore different versions of a project, I would advise you to use the Save As... function. Selecting Save As... will yield a duplicate version of the project that you can take in a different direction. It will still retain the sample content and sequences that are included in the original project. To do this, press Main, select the white folder icon at the top of the display and select Save As...

I hope this helps you! Let me know if you have any questions.
    • Nick D,

I've purchased the MPC Live to not only use it primarily in my studio, but also even more so in a live setting. I must say that I am extremely disappointed in the file saving/loading operations.

For instance, as an MPC 1000 user who just upgraded to the MPC Live, I went about saving all my sequences and their respective program files/audio files in separate folders on the internal hard drive. Those separate folders represented different beats, and at any point I can go load the entire folder and the MPC will load the sequence with its respective programs, audio files and mixer settings in the correct places given that I have the available RAM to do so. Unfortunately, this is not possible with the MPC Live given the Project save functions and the way that sequences load up, when you load them independently as oppose to loading up different Projects.

For starters, it is frustrating that you cannot load an entire folder worth of files, like how I noted was possible on the MPC 1000. When your in a folder and you hold SHIFT and hit LOAD ALL, it doesn't ever seem to really load all the files, and that issue I feel is a bug and not a matter of some sort of operator error or misunderstanding. Im fully upgraded to version 2.0.5 and that issue is still present.

Secondly, and perhaps the most frustrating, when you do load up a saved sequence along with all the program files that go along with the sequence, you have to manually change the programs in the sequence to match what you originally saved. This can lead to fun accidents sure, but in a live setting its really tedious to have all these checks and adjustments to be made when all your doing is loading a saved sequence. So now I know your going to say, decide what sequences you want to use live with whatever programs and save that all to a Project. I can do that, and figure a work around, but its just a general annoyance that I feel could be easily addressed. Since you can't have multiple projects loaded up at once, in my opinion the next best thing, and the way that it use to work, is to load up multiple sequences. However, the developers of this software has made that harder to do and I just don't understand why.

Aside from those, nuances I'm still very satisfied with my purchase even though prep work for my live shows have become more of a headache...

I hope to hear back soon on maybe some tips and or the possibility of these issues being worked out in future upgrades..

      Thank you

OK ... but if i "copy sequence" all Programm (Sample) copy too [ ... in the same Project, and Samples are Project Data, right? ] ... and if i "save sequence" all Programm and Samples are lost :: Akai logic ;-)

I would like to combine in a new Project different sequences incl. Programm and Samples from other Projects.

  • Akai's got some serious thinking to do.
I want to use my MPC Live for backtracks (amongst other things), when playing live.
However, all audio tracks are loaded in RAM, so I can only have 3-4 songs at one time. When those songs are played, I have to load the next project containing 3-4 songs, and so on. This is bad enough in itself. Why not be able to stream direct from disk?

What makes it worse, is I'm not able to change the order of the songs or the sequences. And what if I want to move a song from project #3 to project #1? Well, the only way would be if I was able to save the sequence (from project #3) with audio tracks, and load it up in project #1 with the same audio tracks. This functionality should exist. But it doesn't.

Many of us are looking forward to disk streaming being implemented, which would solve a lot of problems for us.
