First Impression of my MPC X in stand allone mode.

First of all.. congrats to Akai on this next step in the evolution of the MPC family! My MPC X was shipped to me on 7/7/17 and I have been on it rockin happily for hours :)

That being said these are my observations while using it.

1. Need cut /copy /paste. Moving files around is hard.

2. Need to be able to save new versions of sequences without having to save all of the sounds allover again for the variations. In other words, should be able to save new all sequence version 01....02....03 ect.. Using the same sample pool. I think before we use to save a different .par file to account for changes in the samples.

3. Need a select/erase tool which immediately erases what you select. Simply touching a note with the eraser rarely erased the note unless I was zoomed in close. When zoomed out (8 bars in view) t was rarely able to erase a note or group of notes with out multiple attempts. Swiping with my finger was not precise.

4. Need to show used notes in the center of the screen in key group view to avoid having to fish around for them. When selecting a key group track, most of my time is spent swiping and pinching to get the notes into view.

5. Q links need to be able to manage the note edit screen zoom. Touch screen is great for input... not so much for zooming in and out. I find myself using both hands often. Maybe make a q-link mode to do the vertical zoom with one q-link (shift for the horizontal) or have dedicated zoom for horizontal and vertical. Similar to the view navigation in sample mode. Which by the way is one of my favorite features to use. It makes screen viewing super fast while sample editing and It's fast, and efficient.

6. Need to see mpc x hard drive show up on the computer for backup ease. I guess there's a reason why we have to go through USB but I don't have a giant USB so a little at a time seems unnecessary.

7. I use a Yamaha Montage and it likes to send a lot of info to one track. In Cubase we set the midi channel to ALL, not a specific channel. Works great as a controller, but midi transmission to and from the montage is not good. I might have to contact Yamaha about Best practices with the Akai single channel mode.

8. Only crashed a couple of times. One time I had a song sequence disappear. I saved it, exported the song mix. Next day it was gone.

9. Some kinda data corruption takes place with the usb disk. When I switch from stand alone mode to computer mode more often than not scan disk pops up to fix the disk even though the usb disk had not been ejected from the Mpc X. Also one time a kit I had loaded had all of its samples cut in half. As in the length of the samples were missing.
UPDATE I read the FAQ and I believe I should have ejected the USB every time I change from standalone to desktop. Good to know.

10. No Hybrid 3 in stand alone mode ??? Thought it was integrated into the software. So I guess it's not now. Oh well.

11. Also there should be a select all note toggle. On a 8 bar sequence looping the very front or end of a note range gets tricky.

12. Still would like to see the locate button perform like on the mpc 3000. Especial when working on a 64 bar long sequence. Being able to double tap the locate button and jump to the bar you set would be helpful.

Finally I had some Ideas for what I would like in the 2.0 software, but that's already been posted.

Overall my experience has been great, and the soundcard in this thing is nockin!!

Thanks Akai,

DRUM GUN

  • Further more on the point of making the MPC X show up on the computer...
When I put a 500 gb SSD in the X, backing up using a thumb drive will be impossible.

    Just saying...

Really appreciate your initial thoughts on the MPC X . Please keep your comments coming.
I’m especially interested in your thoughts because I’ll be using the MPC X with my Montage.

I’m a long time MPC user. Presently, using the MPC Touch (MPC Software 2.0Beta) on a MacBook Pro (Studio One, Pro Tools) and a Montage.

After creating my drum tracks on the MPC, I record the montage audio directly onto the MPC Touch audio tracks. Afterwards, I bounce all tracks and mix in my DAW. This is the workflow I’ve always wanted and for the most part it works pretty good.

    The issues I’m having are:
    * After I’ve saved a project and open it later on, the audio tracks don’t load with the project. (The actual audio is in the project folder, but does not load with the project).
    * Muting audio tracks does not work consistently. Maybe I’m doing something wrong, but there is no way to create a song using different sequences and have the ability to mute a track without it affecting another track. For instance, If I create two sequences and put them in a song. If i mute the bass track in sequence 1, it will also mute the bass track in sequence two. This makes creating a song with audio tracks on the MPC impossible.
Let me know if you are having any of the same issues. I hope the MPC X will be worth the wait. The reviews of it and the MPC Live seem to be mixed.
