How can I connect Microkorg to MPC Renaissance and map MIDI?

Hi evryone, I have a big problem.
Today I bought a Microkorg and a MIDI-MIDI cable. Back to my home I tried to connect the MK to my MPC Renaissance: MPC Ren receives the signal but I can't hear the sound.
I just want to know how I can connect the MK to the MPC, for example if I need a second MIDI cable that must goes from the MIDI out of the MPC to the MIDI in of the MK, or if I just need to map MIDI settings in the MPC Software.
I'm attaching some photos of the MPC LCD and Preferences settings.
(Sorry for bad english, hope you understand anyway)

  • Hello,

Thanks for posting. I'll be happy to help!

You will need a 5-pin MIDI cable that goes from the MicroKorg MIDI OUT to the MPC Renaissance MIDI IN. Nothing will need to be configured in the MPC Software after that.

You posted a pic of your MIDI setup menu. MPC Port 1 and Port 2 correspond to those two inputs on the back of the Renaissance. As long as those are checked, the MPC will "listen" to them and no further settings are needed.

You may want to check that the MicroKorg is sending MIDI data out. There may be a way to disable or modify the MIDI Out on the MicroKorg in some way.

    Hope this helps!

You also need to connect the MK to the Ren via audio cables (if I am not mistaken, you need two, one for each channel for the MK). Then you should be able to hear the sounds as well. Use the XLR/TRS combo inputs and make sure to set the various source switches in the correct position.

FYI: If you want to record some sounds in a track, be sure to set it up as MIDI track. Then you can play whatever you like and be able to hear it. BUT, if you later want to export your song, you will notice that the sounds of the MK will not be exported as those are MIDI based information. I ususally record my synth sounds and tweak and sequence them or whatever. Once everything is tight I re-sample the track inside the Ren and basically treat that as a sample and put it where it needs to be. A little time consuming and frustrating. As long as Akai does not implement real audio tracks, that is the only solution I have come across...

Let me know if I was able to help.

    Best regards and good luck!

  • Hello,
I have the exact same problem. I'm trying to connect my microKORGXL to the MPC Renaissance, but it does not work. As mentioned above I connected the KORG with the MPC via XLR combo inputs and over MIDI in and MIDI out. I also connected it via USB. The MPC recognized the KORG, but I have absolutely no clue what to do with the settings.

What do I need to do with the settings to hear the sounds from the KORG?

Could someone please provide something like a manual?

Thank you so much in advance!!!

  • Hi Oliver,
Sorry, if you already tried this, but make sure to select the MIDI ports in your preference settings and MIDI program settigns, so that the devices will be synced.

There should be an explanation in the MPC Software instruction manual. In the 1.8 version of the manual you will find relevant information on page 121 (MIDI Programs).

I don't know all settigns by heart and don't want to tell you something insufficient right now. Tonight, after I get home from work, I will check my setup and post another message here.

  • Hi MRC,

I tried everything....Midi Port 1, 2, selected the Korg itself, but nothing worked. I also checked the manual, but there is nothing, which I haven't done yet.
Have you checked your set up yet? Right now, I have the KORG conntected by USB, MIDI and XLR, not sure though, if this is the right way to do it!?!?!?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Hi Oliver,
Sorry, I didn't have time yesterday, I will check tonight. What I can say now though, you probably don't need the USB cable. Just the two XLR cables for audio transmission and the two MIDI cables. Anyway, tonight I will check my setup and let you know.
By the way, have you made sure to put the Mic In/Phono In switch on the top panel to Mic In? Also, the Mic/Line switch on the rear panel has to be set to Line. Sorry, if this question seems stupid, but that is a thing I tend to forget myself every now and then...

  • Ok, I will unplug the USB then....I will also check for the Mic In/Phono In switch, haven't done that yet. Don't worry, it does not seem stupid. I'm thankful for every help I can get! Looking forward to see your set up!!!

    I appreciate it!

  • Hi Oliver,
I checked my setup and just to make sure, I write it down step by step. I am not sure whether all the settings I listed are necessary in Preferences (my MIDI knowledge is somewhat limited, so it's a lot of trial & error), but with these settings at least my system is working.

    1. MIDI Connection
Korg MIDI Out to MPC MIDI In
Korg MIDI In to MPC MIDI Out

    2. Audio Connection
Korg Line Out to MPC Rec In (XLR/TRS combo), watch out for the source switch on the back panel.

    3. MPC Preference Settings
Go to your Preferences settings. Under the AUDIO tab go to ACTIVE OUTPUT CHANNELS and check mark OUTPUT 1+2 and OUTPUT 3+4 and even MPC PORT PUBLIC, just to make sure.

Go to ACTIVE INPUT CHANNELS and check mark INPUT 1+2

    4. MPC MIDI Preferences Settings
Select the MIDI tab. Under Active MIDI Inputs check mark all (MPC PUBLIC, MPC PORT 1 and MPC PORT 2)
Under MIDI Mapping select MPC PORT 1 for MIDI OUT PORT A and MPC PORT 2 for MIDI OUT PORT B. Make sure that your MIDI cables are connected to the corresponding MIDI connections on the rear panel.

    5. MPC SYNC Preferences Settings
In Preferences, select the SYNC tab. Under Receive and Send select MIDI Clock and under MPC FRAME RATE check mark 25.

    6. MIDI Track
Start a new project and create a MIDI track in the software. Under Port, select MPC Port 1. and also select MIDI Channel 1 under MIDI CH(annel)

    7. MPC Hardware Settings
Like I mentioned previously, make sure that all the source switches are in the correct position.

Now you should be able to play and hear sounds from your Korg.
Even if I already posted it above, remember, you can play whatever you like and be able to hear and record it. BUT, if you later want to export your song, you will notice that the sounds of the MK will not be exported as those are MIDI based information. I usually record my synth sounds and tweak and sequence them or whatever. Once everything is tight I re-sample the track inside the Ren and basically treat that as a sample and put it where it needs to be. A little time consuming and frustrating. As long as Akai does not implement real audio tracks, that is the only solution I have come across...

I am really curious whether you can solve your problem. Please let me know... Hope everything works out!

  • Hey,
I did not get the chance to test yet, but I realized I had the wrong XLR cable. I'm about to get the correct ones, but I am not sure which one is the correct one. Sorry, I just want to make sure it is correct this time. I attached two pictures of the cables. Could you please tell me which one is the right one?

Not sure, if I need the combo with 2 TRS cables and 1 XLR or if I need 2 single cables!?!?!?!

    Hi there,
If I am not mistaken, the MicroKorg XL has two line outputs (at least my MikroKorg has two), so you will need 2 cables. I am not sure, but the one in your picture seems to be a stereo cable (there are two black circles around the connector).

Check out these, either one will do:

  • Hey...
I tried, but I'm stuck at step 3!!! My MPC does not show me the active output channels. (see attachment).
Currently my speakers are connected to the Windows Souncard. Could that be a reason why it is not working? I have absolutely no clue! When I hit the keys on the KORG, I get a Midi signal into the MPC, but no sound. What am I doing wrong?

  • Hi Oliver,
I see your Preferences window looks different than mine. And you're on Windows while I am on a Mac, so there may be some little differences.

Also, I noticed you're from Germany just as I am. If you like, reply to the following address

    marco@delics.de

We can continue to trouble shoot in German (may be easier and a little less awkward), and once we have found a solution, we can post it here.

Please send me your complete setup, list all your equipment (including mixers, speakers, etc.) and how you hooked up everything. And do you route everything to the MPC's sound card? I see the first setting in your Audio Preferences is Windows Audio, I don't even have this setting option. It is a little confusing... Also, let me know which MPC software version you are using.

  • Did anyone figure out this problem? I planned on buying this synthesizer so I could connect it to my MPC touch but I wanted to make sure they are usable with eachother.
