How can I program/change midi note values the MPC pads send out?

My MPC Studio is sending midi notes that do not correspond with Ableton Live's drum rack. for example, I play the first pad on the mpc yet it triggers the second sample in drum rack or I will play the seventh pad (3rd column, 2nd row) and it triggers another random sample in drum rack. In this situation I am using the mpc purely as a controller for ableton without loading the MPC plugin.

I am wondering how i can program pads on the mpc to play the correct slot in drum rack. I am assuming I will need to change some midi scripts or some sort of midi functions. I have searched the net long and hard and can not find anything on the issue.

Along the same topic I would like to be able to use the knobs on my studio to change the start and end sample values in drum rack, which I think would be a similar fix as what i mentioned above with programming midi information.

Basically I am looking for a way to start from the ground up choosing which pads and buttons on the MPC correspond with certain functions of drum rack in ableton live. I know ableton is very flexible as far as programming midi information such as knobs and switches, but I cannot find anything on changing the actual midi note values that the mpc sends to ableton. Another example is that when I am in drum rack and press the "bank b" button on the mpc it plays a random note value in drum rack (D#5 i believe).

Thanks for listening, any help is much appreciated!

  • Hello Henry,

Thanks for posting. I'd be happy to help!

As long as you've updated to the latest MPC Software v1.5, you have a MIDI Control Mode. See the video below on how to use this with Ableton:

Let me know if this helps!

  • Hey Thanks for replying!

I am running 1.5 and have now messsed around with it some more and no luck :(

In the video, when he is in midi control mode he can use the pads to trigger sounds, my problem is when i go into midi control mode and arm the track that I want to control (Drum Rack in this case) there is no midi information being sent to Ableton. I have tried setting both mpc port one and mpc public to track and remote and still no data being sent. Even when I change the note value of the first (bottom left) pad to C1, when pressed, the sample placed on C1 does not play or light up or show any sign that midi info is being sent.

The only time I have gotten the mpc pads to send midi info to play like in the video is when I am not running the mpc plugin in, but even then all of the pads and note values are scrambled like i said before.

I was thinking it could be a firmware issue because everytime I open the plug in it alerts me that i am not running the latest frim ware. Problem is when I click "Download Latest Firmware" I get the zip file, open it, and when clicking the firmware update software icon out of the zip file it says the application is broken. I've tried updating the firmware 8 times now, deleting and re-downlaoding with the same result. Eventually I just went on to using the old firm ware.

I know its a lot and thanks so much for taking the time to help me!
if you need me to explain the situation any more id be happy to.
    hope to hear back! -Henry

  • Hmm... Could be a couple things happening here.

If you open up the MPC Software as standalone, does it prompt the firmware update? I would also recommend updating to MPC Software v1.6 if you haven't already.

  • I updated to 1.6 and reinstalled firmware as well (even though it said it was up to date). It doesn't show up in stand alone or vst if I open a new project, only when I open a project I was working on before I updated.

Still no luck with midi mode now that im on 1.6 with firmware update.
Ive watched a couple tutorials online as well and i just can't get it to play an armed track in ableton.

  • Are you opening the MPC Software as standalone or as a plugin in Ableton when trying to use the MIDI Control Mode?

Could you provide a screenshot of Ableton's Session View as well as the Preferences>MIDI menu?
