Is Force an unsupported product? When general recall?

Can Akai confirm whether any future updates are coming to Force? It seems implementation of features ‘coming shortly’ has been abandoned, and there have been no announcements of substance on Akai’s various official channels. The main Force product site is now outdated.

Given that there doesn’t seem to be a chance of receiving advertised functionality, can Akai give us an indication of when a General recall of all Force products will take place? I think there are enough customers to arrange a class action suit.

My question wasn’t an attempt to be facetious. Akai’s comments have become infrequent. It’s my experience that when communication falls off, it’s usually an indication of a major unexpected issue on the development side. I am speculating that they have encountered some insurmountable obstacle to the planned Ableton integration and are trying to construct a work around. But at this point I suspect Akai are weighing a complete recall and discontinuation. Whatever the outcome, I doubt they will be able to repair the loss of faith resulting from misleading marketing.

  • I bought this product fully educated about the day 1 features not in play and I'm very happy. The last update has let me leverage my expansive Splice library. Right now I am using it just as an idea pad mostly and at the same time getting used to the workflow which is really pleasant. There's a few learning curves here and there, but overall I'm happy to have spent this money it's an investment in what I believe will be a superior product to the Push 2 which feels like a Casio Calculator now to use. I'm not a fan of Ableton so I'm not pining for that feature.

I think the customers here are split between people who want it to be all-in-one (me) and people who want it to be driven by Ableton. I check the forums daily and the AKAI site for updates. I think we're going to have a lot of good releases this year.

Their business strategy seems to be very marketing oriented by creating a wave of hype with new and promising products, selling a number of units based on the hype and abandoning the ship when the hype slowly subsides and problems with the half engineered products with low QC start to pop up.
They also ride on the legacy of old school Akai products which is very sad. That makes unaware people buy the products thinking they are on the same point in 2019 as for example MPC 60 or 3000 were at the time.

It seems they have invested too much workforce on the marketing side and too little on the technical / engineering side and this might be an aware decision to create quick profits.
This creates a very bad cycle when updates and fixes cannot be delivered on constant basis since there are too few people fixing the actual issues and working on the customer service.

The amount of people with any kind of problems with Akai products just on this site alone is ridiculous. I can't image other manufacturers having a similar situation (for example NI, which in my opinion creates overall solid products that work).

    I really thought they learned from their mistakes with the new gen (X, Live, Force), but seems like it's not the case after all;
I believe these products have come to end of their "life cycle", and are slowly but surely being pushed under the rug.
Just wait until the new products arrive at 2020 or something and the hype cycle starts over.

I hope to be stand corrected this time, and will proudly admit I was wrong if the latter happens.

One would think the Force is the future of Akai. The MPC is legacy. Although still good, but I would imagine for Akai the Force could have been four times more and the next step after 30 years of the MPC. Maybe it was just wishful thinking.

  • We all bought the Force because a product of this type fills a critical gap in our creative/performance process. It can do some fun things now but in its current state it isn’t a serious professional tool. We are all hoping it will become one. It would be helpful if Akai would make a statement as to whether it still is possible to make it so.

The main features we are missing include (but are not limited to) song mode, Ableton integration, and disc streaming. Just those 3 would make this a truly game changing product, rather than a novelty. Please let us know if you are working towards these or not. That will help us decide whether to return the Force.

  • Hey Barrie,

    Thanks for posting!

The Force is entirely supported by Akai. Announcements about forthcoming updates and new releases will not be published here on the community forum. If you are interested in hearing about new information from the company as soon as it's released, here are a few ways that you can stay ahead of the curve:

    • Follow the company on Facebook.

    • Follow the company on Twitter.

    • Sign up for the company newsletter.

    • Check the website homepage or product pages.

Until information exists in one or all of these places, there will not be any official announcements or discussions about future releases here on the community forum.

With all of that being said, we appreciate your interest in our company and will continue to strive to improve on our products and customer experience. As always, I am happy to continue forwarding all interest, reviews and new ideas over to our team for consideration :)

Thanks! Let me know if you have any additional questions!

    • To be clear, I know she’s not the one dictating policy on this, at least I hope not lol
But, she IS the one that after contacting me, and getting my reply almost immediately, never got back to me.
Going on 90 days now. And before someone assumes she ghosted me because I’m not happy with all this- look back through my posts. I was very actively helping others here find answers to their issues. Did it with enthusiasm. But sometimes enough is enough
    • Also, not everyone on their social media feed have bought a force. Most have not, I’m sure.
In contrast, I’m guessing everyone here DOES have one.
Go to get satisfaction and read about what it is they sell to companies like Akai . Look at the list of companies that also have a presence here.
IMHO this is PRECISELY why Akai pays for this forum.
They also know that they have more control over negative feedback on other platforms.
Please Akai- prove me wrong! Make this thing as bad ass as we all hoped

My point isn't that these features and issues are not a concern, but the overall complexity of delivering quality software at this scale is immense. I'm patient. I can understand others who've put out $ for something and it hasn't arrived yet, but this feels a little over the top. I called AKAI a couple of weeks ago just to inquire and the guy I spoke to was really good. I offered to beta test given my decades in IT and writing for platforms such as these (I think this is an Android solution). There's a long list of gripes I have about the AKAI Force that are semantically based and some about things arriving in the future, but I just don't understand why the forums read so negatively because over time these gripes when well directed will be handled I have no doubt. I don't regret my purchase one bit in fact there is nothing but upside on this instrument. I also think this thing was underpriced given the manufacturing quality, workhorse nature and overall flexibility and I have never owned AKAI before.

    • I hear that perspective. To me, there is something wrong and insulting when a staff member both says ‘please let me know how to improve our product, I will pass suggestions to the dev team’, and ‘We will not respond by telling you what improvements we are working on’. That’s not the fault of Eliza etc, that is just some very badly judged policy from Akai. I also hear you on the complaints, which is why I deliberately kept this post separate from one that dealt with specific improvements so ppl could choose not to read it if they prefer. The fact that no one can ignore is that Force is a product that today more people have complaints than praise for, or questions about.

At least Eliza stared that Force is still a supported product. Meanwhile, over on the Gearslutz forum, ‘Dan from Akai’ posted 2 weeks ago that the critical features we are asking for - song mode, Ableton integration and Disc Streaming - were being ‘worked on as we speak’, so there is a strong disconnect between the two fora. Hopefully good things are eventually coming.

      Peace.
    • @Barrie
That is a very good point and in the moment
the most essential one for me.
If I compare that with my MPC X & Live gear.
The main communication and kind of escalation way
is the MPC Software where you can do that.
With Nick as the Moderator/Support guy it was possible to do so too but it is different by using a support button in an application where everybody can put requests in. That way will really count the issue and hopefully gives it a higher priority...
The other mostly missing part is the possibility to be an official beta tester ... lol, but it looks like most companies are avoiding that step as well ...

Either all of us are stupid together or all of us saw something in the Force that was new.

In fact, the $1500 is gone months ago, we already paid for the features we do not have.

So as much as anybody appreciates that wonderful comment above, we are not stupid and some of us have companies as well in the audio tech biz, so you are fooling nothing. (that comment above just insults people's intelligence)

As others have said, getting rid of this thing is not what I wanted, I already spent the money. I am stubborn and will just wait this shit show out and see what Akai does with the cheaper hardware they decided to use that is giving them problems right now (unforeseen).

Still, I doubt when a new product comes out, the Force will not be right there as a reason to not trust Akai.

What I don't understand is how a company can stone wall a forum where posts are coming in everyday about the Force and it not working as advertised.

Then you have Akai, plugging their ears like a little child saying, "I can't hear you, I can't hear you, I can't hear you".

Yeah, large corporations are going to be like startups, here today, gone tomorrow.

Elza's comment from the management was about as big of middle finger F You, you could possibly give to your already paid customers that don't have the features.

Just had a look at the Force website after seeing all these concerns:

“Attention all Ableton Live enthusiasts! Shortly after its international release, Force’s development program includes a pivotal update that guarantees one-for-one control of all core production and performance functionality within Ableton Live.”

I would consider this a sideletter type notice, which means AKAI wouldnt be able to recognise any revenue for this line until the functionality has been delivered as promised - as alternatively every customer easily wins a legal battle to return the device due to undelivered but promised functionality - I am actually wondering why Akai would take such a risk in the first place.
    • Xactly! it's even you find that note. Guitar Center simply states that:

      ">>Deep integration with Ableton Live<<

If you’re already producing music with Ableton Live DAW software, the Akai Force is the perfect addition to your workflow. Everything you do with Force in standalone mode can be saved as an Ableton Live Set and exported to Live for further production. And because it’s compatible with Ableton Link, you can connect Force to your wireless network and sync your project with any Ableton Link–compatible software or hardware, including Akai’s MPC series. On top of all that, Force is also a stellar controller for the drums, instruments, and clips within Ableton Live itself."

Not a pip about "pivotal" update coming "shortly". Of course I can simply go and return the unit now to GC where i got it. No legal battle needed. Just hope AKAI get real real soon.

Thanks! That was my original thought. The only reason they would not deliver this is because something went horribly wrong with the development\release schedule. So the next question I had was whether a product recall may be an option they are thinking about.

Meanwhile , last night I jammed with my band using the Force (drummer, 2 vocals, me on guitar+synth+force). It sounded awesome. Then they asked ‘so when is this part of our show’? and I was like ‘well, I can’t transition between projects fast enough for live use and one project can’t hold a full set. Also, I would have to trigger every song section manually, cause there’s no clip automation’. So yeah, I have a $1,500 paperweight.

  • Hey everyone,

When it comes to future updates and release schedules I know as much as the public. For anyone outside of the development team, even the tech support office, this information is virtually nonexistent. We're not withholding information or ignoring your feedback. I personally catalog and submit all of your requests to the team for consideration and review.

The forum is here to provide a constructive environment for technical support and direct feedback from the community. We understand the frustration you feel and are here to help you to the best of our ability but releasing the development plans for a product will never be something we can do. Many of you have been very active users on the forum and have received this same response times over. It's not to provoke, it's a honest response, we do not have that information available.

If any of you have additional questions, concerns or feedback feel free to contact me directly at:

  • Thank you Eliza!

As a committed Force user my biggest concern that poor management and over-advertisement is killing product for no apparent reasons. You guys at AKAI might not feel it before too late. I would guess it not development team who is the "blackbox" holding great details (and they should). It is ridiculously bad management hurting both developers and us user at the end.

For the amount of losses for all the boxes returned by (rightfully pissed) first adopters it AKAI could hire just one programmer releasing enough of crucial updates letting us know the things are moving. Why not giving MPC to Force (clearly by now) beta testers? No way to get sound in, no export for the song. Not even song mode. Ask top level manager at AKAI - what product worth if I can make a track and let him/her listen it? Far from what you can read if press "force tag" here. "Redefine", "Eliminates"..... Really?

Please open Guitar Center and see yourself - "Deep integration with Ableton Live". Copied from description. Only means it is there. All implemented and working great. Of course people will be returning it! Thinking "great I escaped AKAI scam" and will tell 10 other musician friends. That will be imprinted in minds forever.

..... "releasing the development plans for a product will never be something we can do". Somehow, advertising plans with Ableton integration was easily made even before the release. No hesitation. Just comes with no ETA or any indication that AKAI making progress on any bigger or smaller items.

Of course "AKAI = lairs, Force = shite" is all that goes around. I am most disappointed on that. Not for $1.5K placed on hold, while burning out purchased extended warranty time ticking, with me not using device. If I cannot export the track made last night, render to the SD card and listen in the car next morning driving to work? So much great solution put in and all failing with MAJOR by value, minor by difficulty to implement issues. I am not engaged, so pity many people who still wait for the best turning the Force into dust collector so early.

It ridiculous to (now after bold advertisement, fueling expectations) position device as Standalone in a bad way. "So it's like guitar, you play it or not", it is advertised with words "solution, technology, standard" ===> Standalone Music Production/DJ Performance >>>>SYSTEM<<<<<!!!! no less than that. Really?

I like to help avoiding the worst. AKAI management is thinking "product rolls well slowly, great feedback is coming Eliza documenting it, our job working product secured for years"...... No.

Nope, it's not what Prock or Joe wants not delivered fast enough. It's not a "noise" because the product is new. Major issue that can be solved quick and low hanging for the corp, just die in complete vacuum. No updates - just shows no progress or hope it's getting solved ever. No MPC software - no input, backup or export - just no use for the device.

"We can't tell the road map or address pretty much nothing first user are asking for" is not care.

BTW, this forum is not on AKAI site. Does not mean new users will not find it and cannot weight official "bright picture" against gory reality. They are all lost potential customers, so as the folks who returned their units past months of negligence.

Please pass the bigger picture to the top level Bob at AKAI and pinch to wake up.

Thank you Eliza for clarifying that you have limited knowledge on what is coming in terms of development.

Meanwhile, others will be interested to know that over on the Gearslutz ‘Akai Pro Force’ discussion, ‘Dan from Akai’ has commented on the development of the Force is moving along with regard to Ableton Integration and Sub groups. He stated that update will likely be released in July . He stated that the July update WOULD NOT include the ‘song mode’ enhancement/remedy, but that song mode AND disc streaming are under development.

To me, this was at least a glimmer of hope, but I stand by my hypothesis that something must have gone horribly wrong to have delayed delivery by this much. Hopefully by Christmas the Force will be a superstar product.

Song Mode after July? Really? Eliza, here's my feedback to Akai: "Hello you bunch of nincompoops sitting in your cubicles tickling each other's lard laden ass!" There are so many nimbler and equally just as good hardware players out there now. Hello, NI and Elektron!

Thank you for sharing Barrie! at least its somewhat more than vacuum. I could understand taking longer time for full Ableton mode (though Andy was playing it back at NAMM already)

Reluctance on any song mode is beyond my understanding. It would take no efforts to have song mode, as simply playing the whole project thru (Shift+Play whatever). I could certainly construct a track this way in no time and be able to listen the creation thru, or jam along with guitar with the song. Or even export to audio out as last resort, cos rendering project to WAV is somehow similarly mystically unavailable. Hiccup on those two beats me the most ... all hopes on Santa at this point :)

    • Okay the problem is there's no way to reorder the lanes and copy+cut+paste could be hit or miss.
    • I actually wonder when AKAI is going to release the Ableton integration I saw Andi demo at NAMM (he said March?!?) as it seems it pretty could replace the functionality of my Push2 with the exception of simpler slicing but more than interested in giving it a try to see how far this would get me at this stage ... got some disposable income I want to spend but dont want to buy yet to realise it wont make the upgrade wont make until my return timeframe expires ...

It may not sound like much but this forum is a great way to vent frustration since Akai does not respond to inquiries you submit on the website. In its current form the Force does some great things but the I can't justify the price without song mode and Ableton integration. Ironically, using the Force with its lack of functionality made me appreciate the Push which I never had any intentions of using. I'm now the proud owner of a Push 2, the Force has been sold, and I'm back to making music.

On Gearslutz a person claiming to be an Akai representative says that updates are coming in the followings months and sometimes gives a specific month. When that month passes, a new month is given. This is a load a crap IMO and I believe there's something going on with Ableton. If you know the history then you know that the original Push was made by Akai. Ableton then made the Push 2 not only without Akai but supposedly Akai was never notified of the project. Akai felt burned by sharing that development knowledge possibly? Maybe Ableton thinks the Force is a stab back and is refusing to cooperate because the Force could take away sales of the Push 2 for those that want an Ableton controller although in my case buying the Force encouraged me to buy Ableton Live and then eventually the Push 2 when I gave up on any integration between Ableton and Force. I'm not sure what's going on but it's definitely something fishy and we're the hook. Thanks for letting me vent. Now back to trashing Akai on Twitter.

  • Dan was just there at GS a couple days ago talking about updates in the thread on the Live. According to him, they're still on for July with the next updates. He even made a joke in response to one persons feature requests about the MPC and said something like that will have to wait for 3.0.
I dont know he makes it sound like theyre still shooting for it, we'll have to see. The MPC Software has plenty of shortcomings (Logic is my main DAW so its a bit lacking), but Im still getting things done. Sad to hear this about the Force/X/Live and all their faults. The MPC used to be THE rock solid machine you could count on.
