Launching audio clips and midi clips simultaneously...

I'm using the MPC in standalone mode: I'd like to trigger both audio samples and MIDI sequences. I know that's easy to do with samples in Clips, but I'm trying to figure out how to get them to fire off in tandem with midi sequences (like in Ableton).

Basically, I'd like to connect two external synths via MIDI, then launch/loop MIDI sequences (imported from Ableton).

I was hoping you could launch MIDI sequences in clip mode, but from what I'm seeing and reading, you can only launch audio samples in clip mode.

What I would like to be able to do is launch audio clips in tandem with specific midi clips in looping sections, and then launch into a song with audio Clips and a song's worth of midi sequences being sent to the external synths.

Since we can't launch midi clips in Clips Programs, what's the workaround for this? (forgive me if this is kind of noob-ish - I'm coming from Ableton world straight into integrating MPC Live in standalone mode)

  • Hey Taylor,

    Thanks for posting!

I agree that having a MIDI Clip launch feature would be extremely useful, especially if you're interfacing with external gear. While this is not possible in the Clip Program, you can mimic the same behavior using Sequences.

All MIDI patterns can be saved to the Live's Internal or External drive as a .mpcpattern file. This allows you to quickly load MIDI sequences directly into a MIDI Program from the Browser just as you would with a Sample or Program. Import each pattern to the same Track but in a different Sequence. For example:

    SEQUENCE 1:

Track 1: Clip Program: Clips - Tech House
Track 2: MIDI Program > External Synth: Intro.mpcpattern

    SEQUENCE 2:

Track 1: Clip Program: Clips - Tech House
Track 2: MIDI Program > External Synth: Verse.mpcpattern

    SEQUENCE 3:

Track 1: Clip Program: Clips - Tech House
Track 2: MIDI Program > External Synth: Chorus.mpcpattern

When you transition from Sequence 1 to 2, you will still have the ability to launch the same Clip Program while sending a different MIDI sequence for your synths. This video shows a user with a similar setup:

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.
    • thanks, some followups:

If I want to launch a sequence in Song or Sequence Mode, can I get it to trigger certain clips as well? Can clips only be launched manually when in the clip program or can they be triggered a different way?

For example, I'd love to set up a live performance the way you have it listed above, but I'd like to transition between sequence to sequence in either Sequence or Song mode, with specific audio clips launching at the top of each sequence.

Can I launch 2 to 4 pads together simultaneously (like you can with scenes in Ableton?). In the clips program, I find that trying to launch two clips simultaneously at the top of bar 1 often results in them not firing at the same time.
    • Further, I'll most likely want to use two Clips program simultaneously: one with drum clips and one with key/synth clips. That way I can send them through different stereo outs OUT from the MPC Live and IN to the front of house/sound mixer.

Same question would apply there - can I get specific audio clips to launch simultaneously at the top of a sequence without manually hitting the pads?

If not, the only workaround I can think of would be to bypass clips altogether and load the samples into the drum program and just trigger each at the top of the sequence via midi.
