Logic pro X + Akai MPK 261 plug-in mappings

Hi everybody!

is there anybody using Logic pro X together with an AKAI MPK225, MPK249 or MPK 261 (the new generation of AKAI ControllerKeyboards) ?
To be precise, my main question is: is it possible in Logic Pro X to assign a VST-Plugin to an AKAI MPK 261 with global Midi Learn? I want to load my favorite plug-ins in any (new) project with the same fixed mapping for any sound or preset of the opened plug-in (like Novation provides with Auto-Map), not only for a single preset in the worst case.

Many thanks for your help!!

I have the MPK249 and Logic Pro X. I think I responded over at the Logic Pro Help forum, but anyways...Automap 4 stinks. I originally bought the Novation 49 SL Mk II thinking that AM4 would be easy and work right...it doesn't. Yeah, it maps a few parameters but their really weird and sort of hit and miss. One knob controls sample delay, one knob does nothing, then the next knob controls eq. Didn't make any sense to me. The pads were terrible. The X-Y pad was some cardboard feeling junk that squeaked when I moved my finger around. I took it back after 2 days and got the Akai.

The pads are 100x better feel and sensitivity. The keys feel great!. It has an arp with latch. It's super easy to take 15-30 minutes and setup the CCcontrols in Logic and keep them set. You just have to open each plugin one at a time, open up Logic Pro X > Control Surfaces > Controller Assignments > Expert View ...mouse click a knob on your plugin then tweak a knob on the midi controller and away you go.

  • Hi Morphyx,

I ́m so glad you wrote this detailed answer!! Many thanks!!
Finally I found an user of both the akai and Logic X.

does the transport controlls function well right from the start?
Can you also assign mappings with the smart controls between Akai + Logic X ?

and very important: as far as I understood you, you can save a mapping (in Logic X or on the controller by the way?) only preset by preset, not globally for one synth or plugin (like after having done one single mapping and saved it, opening the ES2 and controlling the same parameters with knobs 1-8 for any new sound that ́s chosen) or is it possible????

    Thanks again a bunch!!!!!

Everything worked on the transport fine except "Loop" button. Akai sent me an RMA and in fact it's at the inMusic repair facility in Reno now. The tech there reports that the button is working, so when I get it back I will have to figure out why it is not being recognized in Logic.

Other than that everything works great.

As far as plugins go, all you have to do is open:
Logic Pro X > Control Surfaces > Controller Assignments > Expert View
Here's a video that explains how to do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHqgC...

  • Hello Morphyx,

thanks again, very kind of you to help me out :)

two questions remain for now I want you to ask:

1.) did the logic X mapping include also volume channels 1-8 -> faders 1-8 or is this something you need to assign yourself?

2.) one very important thing: can you save a mapping only preset by preset or also globally for a whole synth or plugin (like in automap) ?

cheers for all your assistance, if youre on facebook:

    best wishes :)

  • The MPK249 has templates (I think there are 30?) named Hybrid, Twist (for the synths that come with it) I think theres a temple for the MPC Elements, theres a template for Logic, Cubase, Ableton, etc. So you select the template with the main knob (select Logic) and you now have MMC/Midi control of Logic's transport, mixers, faders, etc.

The MPK faders have 4 banks. So what I did was use Bank A to control the mixer faders, then I programed banks B thru D to control various plugins I use alot. You can change the midi CC#s for the faders, knobs, and pots.

The best thing to do before changing anything in the MPK is to download an app called "MIDI Monitor" which is freeware. Use that app to see what CC#'s are assigned to a knob or fader on each bank by default. Then once you understand you can begin making changes in the MPK.

2.) one very important thing: can you save a mapping only preset by preset or also globally for a whole synth or plugin (like in automap) ?

You can do that in Logic as I described above, but you can also program a template in the MPK to control every parameter of any plugin you want and then name it the same as the plug. For example, if you have NI Massive, you can program one of the blank templates in the MPK to control Massive, then save it and name it "Massive". Here's the neat thing tho...you can also save your "Massive" template so that it not only controls Massive, but also the transport and faders for Logic.
    • Happy new year morphyx :)

I hope youre doing fine. Now I got my Akai MPK261 and waiting for my iMac with Logic to come in 1-2 weeks!
I just went through your advice again and I noticed one thing I didnt understand:

Let ́s say I ́ve loaded the Logic template on my MPK261:
besides the transport controls, the 8 faders are assigned to the first 8 Logic tracks.
now if I load a ''Massive'' Template on the MPK261 with assigned faders (for ADSR f.ex.) , will this put itself over the Logic Template ?

will the transport controls always remain in Logic?
or will I have to switch between Plugin Templates (such as Massive Template for tweaking a sound) and Logic Template (for using the transport control and volume assigned faders) ?

      thanks again for your help!

      All the best :)

  • Hi Morphyx,

amazing infos! listen, If you have paypal I want to send you some dollars so you can have a nice drink for all your help, never met such a helpful user, really!!
You should work for the AKAI support ;)

    So I think I ́ll grab a MPK 261 finally :))

I ́m having two last points before going to town and buying it:

I ́m just starting diving in the midi theory..I read about it on wikipedia, but could you shortly explain to me what CC#s mean in the context with the MPK and why it is important to download the MIDI Monitor ?

If I understood you right, thanks to the templates in the MPK, it CAN be used like an automap controller? you just need to change the templates manually on the keyboard when changing plug-ins , what automap does manually that`s it?

To finish, can you tell me a short procedure how it would work to create a ''massive'' template for Logic X by using the MPK controller?

Please let me know if you have paypal, I really feel like I owe you something :)

    Kind regards from Germany,

    Fabian

  • You owe me nothing friend...go get your new MPK61!

    Midi Continuous Controller info:

If I understood you right, thanks to the templates in the MPK, it CAN be used like an automap controller?

No, Automap is a software program that runs in the background. It scans your AU plugins and creates a "wrapper" that acts as a communication device between Novation midi controllers and DAW's (like Logic). It's a different animal.

The process I described is much more straight forward. You simply assign a knob on your keyboard to a software knob in the plugin (ie. Massive) and "record" that connection in Logic's > Control Surfaces > Controller Assignments > Expert View when pressing "Learn Mode". Then Logic will remember that connection.

It will take some time to set up but will be worth the trouble.

As far as programming a template in the MPX...I'll suggest you read the manual, install the synth "Hybrid" that comes with the MPK, then study the template in the MPK named Hybrid (this template controls the soft synth). Then you will better understand how to program your own templates from scratch.
    • Hi Morphyx,
I know its been a while since you wrote this stuff, but maybe you can help me.
I can't find any info how to program a template in the MPK 261. So lets say I want to make a template for DIVA.
I use Ableton 9, and I know how to get it to learn midi signals from a knob. But how do I get it to load every time I work with DIVA?

  • Hey Morphyx, I am having the same trouble as you with the loop/transport controls. RMA'd it, and all they did was switch the transport message type from MMC to Midi CC. That made the loop button work, but shut down the other transport controls. So basically either Transport works or Loop works, but not both at the same time. I have to go to edit, spin the wheel, the push the correct button every time I want to switch. So annoying. Did you ever resolve this problem?

    Thanks,
    Daniel
