MIDI Triggering with MPC ELEMENT

Hello everyone...

I am trying to use an mpc element or mpc studio or mpd226 as controler for my ipad with impc.
But the thing is I also want my mpc element (or studio or mpd226) being "controled" (as trigged) by ableton live trough midi triggering, to switch every sequence on my ipad trough my mpc...
For this i would need to receive info from ableton live trough midi in and use usb to control my ipad...
Do you u think this is possible ?

Thanks.

  • Hey Gemini,

    Thanks for posting!

You can use these controllers to input MIDI data into the iMPC application but data coming in from Ableton via MIDI input will not be transferred through the controller to the iOS device.

There is, however, a simplified process you can use to sequence MIDI events/clips in the Ableton environment. If you are using one of the controllers you mentioned, you can use MPC Essentials (included with MPC Element and MPD226) or MPC Software (included with MPC Studio) as a plugin within Ableton to sequence MIDI events. Using MPC as a plugin will provide more options to you within the Ableton environment. The following user-made video will help you configure Ableton with the MPC plugin:

Ableton Live Clips Launching MPC Software Sequences when MPC used as Plug-in

Although you won't be using the iMPC application with this configuration, if there is specific sound content within iMPC that you wanted to use, you can certainly use the iPad's audio output to sample these sounds from iMPC directly into the MPC plugin in Ableton!

I hope this helps clarify. Let me know if you have any questions!

    Hello Nick...

Thank you so much for your reply.
I think what you've told me is quite clear... however... after having a look at the video u sent and obviously you know what you are talking about, I may have 1 or 2 questions...

In fact i am using ableton live as a sequence launcher (backing track / backing vocals / synthetic bass / click) and as a midi triggering for guitar effecter / vocal effecter / drum trigger to change program a the begining of the songs and during to switch effect.
And of course I would like to trigger from midi track as I do for the other effecter, inside ableton live, the mpc plugin as well... to have my mpc set changing every songs... and don't have my DJ dealing with that.

Do you think it is possible ?

And you mentioned MPC element and MPD226... but since i just need usb connection for midi in / out can i use the MPD218 ?

Anyway, thanks again for your help.

  • Hey Gemini,

If you won't be using an actual MIDI cable for MIDI input or output, you can trigger different parameters in Ableton with the MPD's pads. Luckily, Ableton is very friendly when it comes to mapping parameters with its MIDI Learn mode so assigning a specific function to a pad or encoder will be simple. You can use the MPD's controller banks to your advantage in this configuration too - for example, you can have Bank A handle MIDI note sends, Bank B handle MIDI CC input, Bank C handle triggering clips, etc.
