Midimix Led Lights

I know I have commented on this subject on other posts and had no response but it would be really useful if the actual feedback commands to turn the LED lights off and on could be documented.
That way I can not only get the control surface to feedback the button push but also monitor the DAW itself and reflect any manual changes.

Okay to answer my own question at least partially:
To turn the Mute light ON you feedback the message sent when button pushed
To turn the Mute light OFF you feedback the message sent when button pushed but last 2 bytes are 00 instead of 7F (ON)
Same for REC ARM and for SOLO(MUTE)

Have only tested with default settings so far as I need Ableton to trigger the lights.
So no clue for the ones on the right hand side as yet (SOLO, Bank Left & Right )

Now the BAD news it doesn't matter what you change in the editor and load to the hardware the Lights only respond to the factory default settings.

Personally I think this is very restrictive as in order to get the lights to work I have to completely change the settings for other hardware as I am already using channel 1.

No surprise then that the SOLO, Bank Left & Right are all on midi channel 1 as well.

Think that if as stated the hardware will work with any DAW the light settings should be configurable as well as the SOLO, Bank Left & Right buttons.

  • I have the same problem but I'm not nearly as knowledgeable as you.
How do you get the lights to turn on in the basic config? I'm using Ableton 9.1

I would like to assign the REC and MUTE buttons to plugin parameters and have them light up so I know if they are active or not. Should be simple enough no ?

  • My understanding and from what I have seen it should work out of the box with Ableton as the scripts handle the interface.
Luckily for me the software control surface I use what it lacks in a nice GUI makes more than up for by the complexity of actions one can do but it is DAW specific to SONAR.
Having spent 3 hours yesterday I can turn all the lights ON & OFF, the more difficult phase is the SOLO button which one pressed needs to turn all MUT lights OFF (easy bit) and then pull from the DAW the states of all the SOLO conditions from the tracks and visa versa. It looks as though it's possible but might need some guidance from the developer.
The code for SOLO is 90 90 1B 7F to turn ON and replace &F with 00 for OFF
    Bank Right is 09 90 1A 7F and Bank Left is 09 90 19 7F.
The SEND I'm not touching as it fires off a whole load of data.
Also when Ableton is closed down it sends a lot of data some of which is to Turn all lights OFF but some of it appears to be CC data to reset rotaries & sliders to zero.
Unfortunately to monitor all this traffic I have had to download a tool that has only 14 days grace period on it otherwise it costs well more then midimix.

  • Hi Nick,

    Thanks for posting again.

I don't know that I have anything to provide for you here, but It seems to me like you've got it more or less figured out. I'll be happy to add a feature request for you for this for better/easier LED management in the meantime.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hi Corey

Yes would appreciate a feature request for better control of the LED lights. Also might be worth having the ability to de-activate the SEND ALL button as it sends out a lot of packets on midi channel 4 that look like rotary & Slider CC data positions but could cause issues on other DAW's if they are not trapped and unfortunately as I have set all midimix controls to channel 4 could cause unexpected results. Mind you having said that as long as I keep the same CC's as factory settings may actually work for me.
Looks like another busy weekend ahead again.

P.S. It would be nice if Akai actually published the codes to alter the lights in a Appendix. I know it may not be useful for everybody but would at least make the product easier to implement on other DAW's and you never know might even boost sales

    Cheers Nick

  • Hi,

Thanks to Nick's info, I am able to use the LED, via simple note-on and note-off messages. It works for for every LED, except the solo: I receive a note number 27, but sending this note does nothing. I even wonder whether there is a LED under the solo key.

    I also noticed that notes 1, 4, 7, 10 13, 16, 19, 22 set the mute status, while notes 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23 set the solo status. The actual display of the status depends on the solo key.

    Best,

    Jip

  • Hi Jip

I'm pretty sure the SOLO does light up will know in a few hours. I'm using it as a simple toggle so I don't have to hold it down. Have now got Mute or solo working dependant on how the toggle is set and it also checks the DAW and pull backs relevant Mute or Solo positions and resets the leds accordingly. Just need to replicate on remaining buttons and trigger the SOLO led which I'll be implementing in next few hours.
Need some caffeine first...and then I'll post progress.

    Cheers

  • Hi Jip

I can't seem to get the SOLO button to light up either. All the rest do apart from SEND ALL which I'd expect.

Everything else now working as I expected.

  • Hi Nick,

Thank you for your answer. I confirm that every button works with note on/off messages, except the solo button:
    - it triggers note on/off 27 when the button is up/down
    - pressing solo the button toggles the display of solo status (via previously sent notes notes 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, and 23), instead of the mute status (via previously sent notes notes 1, 4, 7, 10 13, 16, 19, and 22).
    - sending a note on 27 does not toggles the display. It does not light any LED either.

And yes, the "send all" button, well, sends all.

    Best,

    Jip

I did use another program that had a trial period that was excellent but cost over £100 so just used it for this exerciseas could not really justify the cost.
I have do have screenshots of all the hex going to and from the midimix for all the buttons though and my control surface does work and the lights automatically come on to reflect the DAW when a project loaded.
But really AKAI should document all this in the 1st place.

  • Totally agree that akai should provide all the midi info, especially when the midimix is supposed to be configurable.
The midi data I can figure out, but I don't get how you changed it.

  • Luckily I was intending to use midi channel 4 in any case so with some assistance from the developer of the control surface I was using I managed to trap all the incoming data and control the DAW. Also managed to create a monitor process on the controller surface which could then update midimix on current status of MUTE, SOLO & REC ARM. Also changed the way the SOLO button was interpreted so it was a toggle as opposed to holding it down.
The Bank Left & Right I assigned different functions and as all the programmable sliders etc were also using channel 4 the SEND ALL also works.

  • so you had some sort of program in between the daw and the controllsurface that mediated in real time?

  • No the controler surface dealt with the real time monitoring. Unfortuantely it was developed by an enthusiast and only works for Sonar but it literally can do everything but do the washing up and the developer is the kind of guy who likes problems and is happy to help and even supply a coded example as a starter and even add additional functionality if requested.

  • I’m perturbed.
I'm using my MidiMix as a controller for a Behringer XR digital mixer. All is good, except some of my Note on/off commands are turning on some random LEDs. After they turn on, they don't turn off.

I want to disable them completely. Even better would be to have the ability for them to momentarily light when I press one of the buttons.

But there is not documentation for how to control them, so I am at a loss. It seems that this device was designed to work with DAWs but not other MIDI devices or mixers???

...Nick and others on this forum have asked for help or documentation for managing the MidiMix LEDs 8 months ago, but no info from Akai yet?

UPDATE 7/6/16: I have determined that the LEDs were being turned on because my MIDI setup was echoing certain commands back to the Midimix. Thanks to Nick the OP for helping me determine the root cause.

  • Hi there,

i have just received my MidiMix tonight, and i have been stuck with the difference between it and the LPD8 to control the leds On / Off.
Basically i'm used to program in Delphi 2010 and here is a sample of the code i used to light on/off any pads on the Akai LPD8:

    FMidiOut.NoteOn(channel, notenumber, Dynamic); //Light on
    FMidiOut.NoteOff(channel, notenumber, Dynamic); //Light off

//Dynamic is a byte. I'm used to set in at '1' in any case.

    ********************************************
Sample to make the same thing with the Akai MiidiMix:

    FMidiOut.NoteOn(channel, notenumber, 1); //Light on
    FMidiOut.NoteOn(channel, notenumber, 0); //Light off

//I send a "noteOn" message in any case, but i put 1 to light a button (Mute, Rec Arm, Solo...whatever), and 0 to switch it off.

//Please notice that i use the TMidiIO class from the project described here:
    https://searchcode.com/file/55853524/...
FMidiOut is an instance of TMidiOut, derived from TMidiIO

I hope that it can help you.

    Marc from Toulouse (France).

I recently got a MidiMix of my own and documented my discoveries about the communication protocol here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1z...

Maybe it'll help someone implement support for their own projects.

  • Thanks for the help so far people.Julian that document is great, really helped me get a better understanding.

I'm trying to fix the problem of leds not reflecting the current status of devices they are controlling in ableton. I understand I need the mixer to send a 0x00 value to turn the led off. My problem is that I have no idea how to change the 0x7F value to a 0x00 one. Trying to use SysEx Librarian and MIDI Monitor to resolve this but no idea how/if these programmes can even assist me. Using a Mac.

Any help would be super appreciated. This has been doing my head in for days.

I wish you could change this code in the Midimix software...
