MPC Live - Latency When Sampling External Audio Via the Looper

I've been having latency issues when sampling external audio via the looper in standalone. In firmware 2.2.1 testing showed latency of 20 milliseconds. I've now upgraded to firmware 2.2.3 and there's no improvement, in fact latency is now around 21 milliseconds.

Here's a video demonstrating the issue:

Here's a video showing the workaround I'm currently having to use to rectify the issue

Love my Live and this is the only significant issue I've experienced with it so far - be great if Akai Pro could fix this as it would make for a much simpler workflow when sampling external audio via the looper.

I've read of other people experiencing similar issues so believe it's not an isolated problem - if anyone else could do some tests and report back here that would be useful to help confirm this.

  • i feel u, same experience

from what i check i think it's a sum of bad midi (6/7ms) but in particular is the audio to digital conversion that is slow, due the fact mpc live is just a computer with a software and a quite high cache

if u use the looper as audio track i've notice it cuts itself few ms, so is on sync, better than use as audio for program, is faster than what u do, at least for my mental scheme

i think is almost impossible for akai to reduce this, they can optimize it but is always a computer with an high cache buffer on soundcard

  • what they could do is add a negative delay on midi (and clock audio) in order to compensate, as in almost all the DAW

  • I have used the LOOPER a great deal and not noticed this - perhaps I got lucky!

Does it happen even with no effects?

What about it if you're monitoring the input signal?

I will try and keep an ear out now...

  • Hey everybody,

    Thanks for posting!

I did a little testing with Looper and an external synth receiving MIDI data from the MPC and experienced similar behavior.

If you would, please, try doing the same thing except record your audio to an audio track instead of in Looper. When you've recorded the audio in, pull up the sample in Sample Edit mode and let me know where the Start point marker in the sample is located. Is it at the very beginning of the sample or is there space between the beginning of the sample and where the audio actually starts?

    Thanks!

    • Bob:

Were you sending MIDI notes from the LIVE to the external synth? This seems to exacerbate the issue, in my tests (see below).
    • Yes I was sending notes Ghetto Byrd. Will try using MPC Lve midi clock to start a sequence in my synth and compare with triggering individual notes and report back

  • OK, I've only used the looper on bass & guitar - no MIDI goin' on. I have not noticed this but I'll see if I can check this weekend.

ACTUALLY, I did a bunch of further tests over Thanksgiving, and found widely varied results.

My tests consisted primarily of using the BPM chopper to check for gaps between the machine's beat and the actual recording - in some cases there was a gap when using the LOOPER, and a smaller (minimal) gap using the AUDIO IN.

This was ONLY when the live was controlling notes on an external midi device - using the midi just to start another device had minimal gap.

ALSO, it seemed to vary much - when the LIVE was playing melodies on my CBX the gap varied widely for no reason I could determine.

MOST IMPORTANTLY FOR ME - using the looper to record an external instrument that I am actually playing seemed to have no latency whatsoever. Yay!

So, the latency seems to involve MIDI....

...and in most cases it seems minimal.

    But my tests continue....
