MPC Live - Slicing different samples into the same drum program

Can you slice different samples into the same drum program on the MPC Live? I would like to be able to chop a sample (#1) and create a new drum program. Then slice a second sample (#2) and assign the slices in the same drum program, starting from a "higher" pad number, not only one slice for one pad...

Ideally, handling of note events would be also great ..

Is it possible?

  • Hey Benoit,

    Thanks for posting!

To assign specific samples to specific pads, use the Assign function in Trim mode of Sample Edit. To do this, first chop your sample in Chop mode. When you have completed chopping your sample, select the Trim page at the lower left corner of the display. Select the Slice that you want to assign to a pad with the Slice field and select Assign. The subsequent menu will allow you to select the pad to which you want to assign the sample as well as the program and other specifics. For more information regarding assigning samples, have a look at page 108 of the MPC Live user guide.

I hope this helps you! Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hello Nick,

Thanks so much for your answer(s). While this help, I was wondering if there is any way to quickly batch this process: I would basically like to set the destination's starting pad so that the "Assign" process assigns not only one slice but all the slices to the pads of the destination program AND creates note events in the track of my choice at the same time (chosen among the tracks using the program). The important aspect here is I would like to use the "create note events" function as well ...

Right now, I do the following:
    - create a new drum program (with note events) based on my slices
    - transpose the events in the newly created sequence to the pad area I want
    - copy the events into the track using my working drum program (thanks to the Sequence:copy events function)
    - assign manually the pads in the working drum program
    - clear the temporary sequence created by the Assign process....

As you can see, this is quite tedious. I was hoping for a more streamlined "merge" option where you assign the slices into an existing drum program and set a destination starting pad ...

Do you think we could add this to the "wanted feature" list?

PS: the reason why I use the "create note events" is that I am trying to keep the groove of the original loop as much as possible. I am in the process of transferring my Ableton liveset into the MPC and I basically have groove loops that I want to MIDIfy... And while doing so, I am trying to merge the different groove layers into one Drum Kit track...

  • You can create a program from slices (the slice number is relative to the pad on which it will be placed) in Sample Edit by selecting Chop mode, holding Shift, and selecting Convert. Choose New drum program using slices. You can also choose to create events in this menu - put a tick in the box and select Do It!

  • Right. I am using this function in the method cited above. I must not have been very clear. Basically, i wished there was a way to merge slices of different samples into to the same drum program, while also adding note events to a midi track of our choice.
In general, I feel merging functions could be more present in the programming. This would be very useful to migrate existing loops into aggregate programs.

  • Hey Benoit,

Sure, I can understand how that could improve your workflow. You can submit feature requests like this directly to the team with the MPC 2.0 Software's built-in feedback module. The feedback module is represented by a smiley icon at the lower right side of the software next to the browser icons. This information goes directly to the Akai team for consideration!

    Thank you for your feedback!
