MPC-X is great / mid 2018 / good user experience

Hi, having used the MPC-X (via the Renaissance+Touch) for two weeks now we..

-have been surprised of the cool professional packaging (..it's Apple Mac Pro-like).
-like the sturdy touchscreen protection cover/shield (..we use it for a 9" tablet too).
-enjoy the Q-Link displays (..very exact infos at the fingertips when making music).
-count on the solid display stand (..doesn't bend or make any noises during work).
-use the easy accessible front panel SD card slot a lot (..swap files and projects).
-praise the solid MPC-X casing but overall low weight (..hit it hard + carry around).
-love the silent operation (..no display/LCD noises, no distracting fan, no crackles).

Nothing major, but many small little things do sum up for a good user experience.
We've been reading a lot about the MPC-X before purchasing it and also tested it
in the shops, but we didn't know very much about the above mentioned subjects.
The MPC-X touchscreen protection cover was a welcomed, positive little surprise.

Praising the MPC-X, we do have to admit that the legacy MPC Renaissance isn't
so very bad either. As beeing a MPC controller it is really very much different, but
at times it's the very same machine (knobs, buttons, transport, solid casing, usb).

ps: Above mentioned fan noises exist on Roland MV-8000s, the MPC-X has none.

PEACE/o

  • The MPC-X is great but it did last only for 6 month. The vast amount of functionality
was just not what appealed anymore. Also the standalone advantage isn't counting
that much if you have it cable-sticked to a place where other musical gear like your
masterkeyboard and a computer might just takes control. That won't be the situation
if you have a MPC-Live, which can be taken to the sofa, since it's battery powered.

Using internal MPC-synth (standalone or software) is quite handy, but since it is all
software (even standalone-ish) you might start to ask yourself why not simply using
the very well sounding software synth you already have on the desktop or tablet etc.
Running external hardware gear like synth needs cabling, running external software
gear like software synth needs it too. Either way might have a more convincing vibe
if you may say so. Running 16 Q-Link knobs on internal synth wasn't convincing as
the q-link very own displays could be hard to read from a real word "sitting behind a keyboard" distance of "not looking straight down onto the knobs". Control watching
the touchscreen when dialing any of the 16 knobs is what this usage might provide.

The MPC-X advantage of having many Midi and Audio in/out ports, the 8x CV/gate
connectivity plus a big angled touch display didn't change an overall audio workflow
of already established music gear. The Xs role as studio centrepiece didn't establish.

One open minded thumbs down has to be given: Bluetooth is not integrated well. It
should have been an extension for all sorts of phone/tablet-musical-app-trickery, but
was quickly put aside since connectivity couldn't be done with many mobile vendors
using standard protocols which have indeed proven to work flawlessly musical-vise.

Good to see new MPC-compatible hardware like the Force establishing, sharing the
same sounds and GUI concept, which also counts for the overall 2gb RAM handling.

    PEACE/X
