I’m ready to figure this out.

MPK Midi Ports Description, Ableton Live

The MPK (249, in my situation) has multiple MIDI In and Out ports that show up in Ableton Live's MIDI preferences. I am in the process trying to make sense of, all the MIDI data coming in and out of Live. In MIDI/Sync preferences, under MIDI Ports, my MPK 249 has 4 input ports and 4 output ports that can be selected to send and receive data to and from Live. My main question right now is: what each these are for, and what do they correspond to on the controller? So I can then figure out what turning these switches on/off is actually doing. I was unable to find this information in the manual or in any articles. Here are the ports that show up:

Input:
MPK249 Input (MPK249 (Port A))
MPK249 (Port B)
MPK249 Input (MPK249 (MIDI))
MPK249 (Remote)
Output:
MPK249 Input (MPK249 (Port A))
MPK249 (Port B)
MPK249 Input (MPK249 (MIDI))
MPK249 (Remote)

Thanks for anybody willing to take the time to explain!

  • Hi Joseph,

    Thanks for posting!

Here is a quick list of the ports:

    1) USB MIDI Channel A1-16 (Port A)
    2) USB MIDI Channel B1-16 (Port B)
    3) 5-Pin MIDI Input/Output (MIDI)
    4) Exclusive Channel (not used) (remote)

Anything on the board can be assigned to channel 1-16 on either port A or B. Just a way to get more channels out of the controller and help route your signal around to different instruments. the "MIDI" port is the hardware port on the back of the MPK.

Chances are unless you changed something, you're only going to need to activate Port A.

    I hope this helps!

  • This answered my question too. I searched for this and could not find it. Thanks to whoever merged my question with this one. I would have been able to find it if it would have listed the ports as I see them on my Ableton Live 8 on Windows 10. My MPK249 shows the following ports.

    Input: MPK49 Input (MPK249)
    Input: MINIIN2 (MPK249)
    Input: MINIIN3 (MPK249)
    Input: MINIIN4 (MPK249)

    Output: MPK49 Output (MPK249)
    Output: MIDIOUT2 Output (MPK249)
    Output: MIDIOUT3 Output (MPK249)
    Output: MIDIOUT4 Output (MPK249)
