MPK2 Series Firmware Update Sorely Needed

I truly believe that a firmware update is required & what will take the MPK2 series from good/great to THE WORLD's BEST midi controller keyboard. Everyone who agrees, comment underneath as if signing a petition.
1. Display all relative info for every controller while its being used on the "Preset/Performance" Screen underneath Preset Title in the 3 empty lines.
Preset: 10 Cubase
F17 CC# 92 -012
Last State -107
MIDIChannel:Common
(F17=Fader 1 Bank C)
(CC# is the MIDI CC# for that specific control)
(012 is the value currently being sent over CC#92 & would in/de-crease with movement & 107 is Last State's Value.)
2. "Preview" should work as a toggle, not momentary, you push it once & it stays on
so that no value is sent while correcting current bank of faders/knobs (Buttons don't matter, they are still correct) When done...toggle "Preview" button "Off".
3. Tap Tempo - It should have the ability to send CC#s & Qwerty Commands in order to control DAWs Tap Tempo(Light should continue to flicker when sync'd externally).
4. "Loop" has to be fixed, why all the other transport controls work & loop doesn't I'll never understand, "Loop" needs the ability to send CC#s & Qwerty commands independently of the rest of the Transport Buttons to control DAWs "Cycle".
5. Pads should light up while in playback. Lighting the specific pads/notes that were played during recording.
6.ALL controls, should have ability to independently send any format & corresponding value set out any MIDI Channel/Port, including keys, at least 1st octave.
Anyway guys? What do ya say? You down? You think a firmware update that included all of this, or most of it would make this Controller the WORLDS BEST?

  • Hi,

Good initiative. I am in general with you especially for 1) and 2) which I see them as fundamental.
I would also add to asign the split function to any button under the fader like former MPK series could do ( I have both generations).

    All the best

  • Hi Nate,

    Thanks for posting!

All great ideas! I'll pass these along.

The only way I'd like to call out here is #5. This is entirely possible as long as you set it up. Essentially, all you need to do is send the recorded midi data back to the keyboard. Otherwise it has no way of knowing what to playback. How you do this will be according to your DAW, but the basic process is to copy your midi file/sequence to a midi track and set the output to the same port/channel the pads are using. By default this usually port 1(A), Channel 10.

    Hope this helps!

  • I found a work around for #4 in Cubase & Logic, so I assume there will be for all other major DAWs. Here's the background info you need to understand this. The transport controls on MPK2 series sends MMC, MMC/MIDI, MIDI Realtime, MIDI CC, & PTEX. The Logic Preset is set to send MMC/MIDI, but Loop don't work. So I tried setting the Transport to send MIDI CC (which is what the faders/knobs etc use) and I went to "controller assignments", but when I hit "Learn" to get the values for Play/Stop etc in, they weren't recognized. Here's the work around, go to key commands (ALT & K on PC Keyboard or OPT & K on MAC) and find the command in the list (type in search field in top right corner, much faster) then click on command(Play/Stop etc) so that its highlighted, then click "learn assignment" in bottom right & VOILA, it registers! Do that for each one, Play/Stop etc, and even for the illusive LOOP (called "cycle" in the list) & TAD-AW!!! All the transport buttons work. Cubase is similar, its Preset is already set to send MIDI CC, but the file from Akai that sets up the keyboard to be used with Cubase, doesn't have "loop" in the list (Really don't know why). Here's the steps to add it. Go on "Devices", go to "Device Setup" Click on "Generic Remote" (the one you made when importing the file from Akai that sets up the MPK2 series to function with Cubase) To keep things neat, scroll to the bottom of first section, you'll see Trans Stop, Trans Play all the way to Trans FFwd. Click on "Trans FFwd" so that its highlighted. Then, to the right, click "Add". You won't see anything til you scroll one down, underneath it, so scroll down and click on duplicate you just made, now click the box beside "Learn" and then push "Loop" on the MPK2 series controller. You should see the value has changed under "Address". Now double click "Trans FFwd"(new duplicate you just made) and rename to "Trans Loop" or Cycle, whatever you prefer. Now in the bottom section or bottom half, scroll down to the bottom where you will see "Trans Loop", but it says "not assigned" beside it, Click on "not assigned" & change to "Command", then beside that, change to "Transport", then beside that select "Cycle", TAD-AW!!! Now your entire Transport buttons work on the MPK2 series. Oh, be sure to uncheck "Learn" box so you don't accidentally hit a fader and change anything. So it kinda sucks that the Preset & MIDI map file from Akai don't work straight out the gates, but here's a 5 min fix for Cubase or Logic. Be sure to save the preset for Logic as well, otherwise it will jump back to MMC/MIDI next time you turn on your controller and you won't know why your Loop/transport's not working properly. So there you have it, #4 may not be necessary. I suppose it depends on how MPK2 series works with other DAWs.

Oh, and its true, I tested #5, and as explained above, it works! Just need to set up an extra midi track that sends to the MPK2 series to channel 10 & the pads light up while in playback. For example, say I want to record drums inside Cubase with Groove Agent, normally I would add a VST instrument track & load my samples/preset, arm for recording and away I go, well, its exact same thing, except after I create my instrument track, I create a midi track as well, set the output of the MIDI track to channel 10, and arm both tracks for recording and record, when I play back, the pads light up exactly in sync with what was recorded. Cool!!! Don't worry, it doesn't duplicate the sound or anything, unless you have midi thru going from DAW to other MIDI sound module hooked up to MPK2 series controller on channel 10. So, looks like there's only 4 things, not six, but I would like to add to the list in place of the 2 that aren't needed, well, one for sure, the "Loop/Transport" may still need fixing.

  • The "NEW" #4 & #5
#4. Split Function should have more than 2 zones. It'd be cool if on top of more than 2 zones, the keys would have same ability as pads when in edit mode, you know how you push a pad, then "Edit" button? Same thing for each key on keyboard, but be able to change the type of message sent (note/CC/Qwerty etc.) & also change the output. But that's what #6 is all about. And Vice Versa for the Pads, which brings me to...
#5. Pads should be able to be set to different outputs as groups (much like the Split Function/Zones does), having to set each individual pad's output one at a time is ridiculous! If you want 2 Pad banks to be on say A10 and other 2 on B10, or lets get creative & say Bank A on A7, Bank B on A10, Bank C on B7, Bank D on B10. That's alot of work having to program 1 Pad at a time. Same as zones, you should be able to select a group of Pads and then set that group's output all at once, not having to set each pad individually. Not to say get rid of individual editing, the best is to have both. The previous setting would be over ruled by new setting, for instance, after setting Pad groups/zones, say there's a Pad you want to go to a different sampler/sound module(hardware or software), you can set that Pad individually, which would over ride the group/zone setting but only for that Pad, leaving all other pads in their zones. Essentially zones are just group editing, being able to change the type of message sent & the output of a bunch of individual pads all at once. But then each Pad could still be edited individually as well. Zone/Groups act as a Top Level editing ability, but then you can get in there and edit on an individual bottom/deep level just like the Pads are now. Except add Qwerty & MIDI CC as possible message output types.

  • Oh Shoot...ALMOST FORGOT!!! #7 REALLY IMPORTANT IF POSSIBLE! MPK261 has got to be able to send MTC! Trying to sync MPK2 series so that bpm can be controlled from it is near impossible since I'm pretty sure, no DAWs accept MIDI Clock as a Sync source...NEED MTC (MIDI TIME CODE)

  • 1. Split kbd Please
    2. MPC Software for Everyone, dump essentials.
    3. Optimized DAW scripts. (ableton, logic, etc.). Workflow. Try to Beat that NI maschine!
    4. CC on Pads

Make us feel you are worth it on the 21st century, Akai.

  • Second this, Ableton integration is horrible at the moment. Bitwig works only because of their scripts.
