Multi channel VIP setup.

How can I send MIDI to a single VIP instance from multiple keyboards? Using Ableton Live 9 here. I expected to be able to set each individual VIP slot to a MIDI channel and have Ableton route from keyboard X to a specific channel on VIP.

  • Hello,

Thanks for posting! I'm so glad you brought this up as I forgot that Ableton Live complicates things a bit. It's totally possible, though!

After you set all of the MIDI channels for the individual slots within the VIP instance, take a look at this pic below for how to configure multiple channels into VIP:

On the opposite side of things, when it comes to the Advance talking with multiple VIP instances within a DAW, you can easily switch between these instances using the DAW Control mode. It's covered in this article:

http://www.akaipro.com/kb/article/1852 (in the "Controlling Multiple Instances with VIP" section)

    Hope this helps!
    • And a new question to an old post;
      I'm trying the opposite;
I want to have 1 vip instance with 1 output, but more than a synth.
I don't found any function to easily change the midi channel from the keyboard (akai, really only the global option??....) and if i try out with the options on the multi section (setting each unit from the keyboard or in the app) it even doesn't work. Only the synth on the channel 1 works.
I tried it with VIP standalone and as VST over Ableton.
      Same result :/

  • Thanks for the quick reply.

I will retry this, must have missed a step when I tried this approach.

The article you mention was helpful as well, but Omnisphere doesn't show up having multiple outs (which it does). I guess that should be a separate post on the forum, right?

    Highly appreciated this response.
    • My pleasure to help! We can answer this here too; it's all the same basic thing.

VIP will scan whatever VST instruments are in a given folder, so you'll want to make sure you have multiple Omnisphere files in your VST folders (I don't know whether you're Windows or Mac OS X).

In these folders you would have an Omnisphere.dll (WIndows) or Omnisphere.vst (OS X), but also something like Omnisphere_8_Out or similar. Check your VST folders to make sure they're there first.

  • I spent some time on figuring this out since it is not working as expected, at least this doesn't seem to be a workable approach.

What I found is that selecting the vip midi track and midi channel is not enough to route to Omnisphere. The reason is that the midi channel on the Ableton track is routed through to Omnisphere, regardless of what I configure in VIP.

I need to select the correct channel in VIP AND pick the corresponding channel in the Omnisphere multi (Omnisphere also supports it's own multi track setup), else I won't get any midi notes in Omnisphere. (See picture for clarification)

The bad thing about this is that I can't use the VIP browse feature because all patches are loaded in track1 on channel 1 in Omnisphere. In a live situation this means I can't touch the browser without having to grab the mouse and set the first track in Omnisphere back to the midi channel that the midi notes originate from in Ableton (passing it through via the slot in VIP).

I wished I could map the midi channel from Ableton to another channel in a VIP multi slot (f.e. selecting slot 5 in VIP to route midi from Ableton channel 5 to channel 1 in Omnisphere).

Thanks for exploring that a little further! I'm going to look into this a little further and see if I can find a better solution for you!
    • As I understand this, you're basically trying to pull off a "Multi Inception" :)

You're opening Omni multis within VIP multis, trying to access each from multiple places through VIP from Ableton. It's just not going to work like that.

The MIDI channel selection for the Multi slots in VIP should be used with multiple instances of Omnisphere or any VSTi, one on each slot.

  • Hi there,

And it works, but it losts midi clock synchro between Ableton and VIP. Is there any case to fix it? Here is my case:

    1. I connect the akai 49 to PC, run Ableton and put VIP x64 as instrument.
    2. In VIP create multi. On midi ch 1 - battery, on midi ch 2 - hybrid 3.
    3. When I change the tempo in Ableton, the VIP changes too - very good.

    and now problems:

    1. When I play hybrid 3 arpeggiated patch - there is no reaction for changes. Just stayn on the same tempo.
    2. When try to change midi channel on advance 49 from 1 to 2, there's no reaction in VIP plugin, just playn on the midi channel 1. /VIP Track is set for all inputs and all outputs midi./

    • We'll have to be more specific here. What Hybrid patch are you using? Are you using the Arpeggiator on the Advance or within Hybrid?

Hi i have the same problem. I'm using VIP as a VST plugin in Ableton, and i have problem to synchronize tempo with arpeggiators patches on all slots beyond the first. So only on the slot 1 arpeggiators are synchronized with Ableton tempo.
Any ideas how to set it up?
