NAMM 2014 AKAI MPC SOFTWARE OS 1.7 PREVIEW.

Dan at AkaiPro shows a preview of what AkaiPro is cooking up in their upcoming MPC Software OS 1.7 for the MPC RENAISSANCE & MPC STUDIO at NAMM 2014.
Akai just dropped OS 1.6 last week,but as you can see Dan and his team are hard at work already on the next OS (1.7) due out in a couple months or so.
Some of the new furthers include:

    Can we please have Midi recorded directly to DAW timeline(MPC 1000). Or the option to midi drag notes from MPC Ren plugin to daw timeline so we can sequence in daw if we choose too.

    Direct audio record into ren. Like a regular daw .. So you get wave stems ( audio tracks )so mpc ren software will be a fully fledged daw. Like ableton or Cubase etc

    Whats the possibility of this request into the software...
    parameter modulation...

    Basically a event(ie pad 01 from track 10) can trigger a modulation envelope on almost any parameter in the software... For instance if i wanted to create a sidechain pumping like sound, i would modulate or automate the track volume of my bass pgm (lets say it's track 2 in the sequence) from pad01 in track 10(which is my drum pgm).. When doing this you have a envelope shape(asdr) and the choice to subtract or add the value.. Obviously it wouldn't be restricted to just track volume .. You could do this with the filters, pitch , and insert fx . I'd see lots of new school producers and different genres flocking for this feature.. Only a few daws really do this..

    It has advantages over a standard sidechain feature as it can be used on any plugin or parameter in the software if you get what i mean... ie(every time a snare hits, it modulates the send for a sample phrase. This send mite be a reverb send)

    import midi option definitely should be able to make it in, mavericks support is unethically overdue and should have been released even in its beta stage at least for the over 40-60% of users that have updated... also @J Sandeen I have asked for the installation files for all the content since I have no disc drives anymore... I will continue to say this every post until I get those dropbox links for download... i need entire package even soundbanks...

    I need glide and portamento in keygroups. I also need a way to sample quickly in cubase. This could be possible with an extra fx plugin or by making the mpc software an fx plugin.

    Are there any plans for these features in the near future?

    Hopefully 1.7 the software actually mimic the hardware controls 100%... ex (Seq Edit) should be available when you don't have your controller with you just like it is available when the controller in plugged in... my travel rig is mpc element, m-audio air mini 32, macbook pro... I need to be about to edit sequences exactly how I can do it on my full rig at the studio... Or am I missing something...

  • J sandeen, wow, these updates in 1.7 are putting a smile to my face. Things are really starting to come together it appears.

    I would love to switch back to my mpc renaissance in 1.7. However, there is one crucial part to my process that is making me not. I have six synthesizers and two drum machines. I like to use them and experiment with them as I put stuff together, why does the MPC software only allow you to switch between four midi devices? I REFUSE to have a workflow which involves changing the settings every time I want to switch midi hardware synths.

    Also, I have gotten use to how maschine can record my interfaces audio in sync with the beat clock when Im sampling, as in if I record 8 bars in machine I can set it to sync record 8 bars and turn that 8 bars of midi into audio without looking. On the ren I could only do it if I used the Ren as the interface. this isn't so big.

  • I finally invested in mpc renn.
    And I learned all its functions in a couple of days. Comming from a legacy mpc background most recently been using mpc 4000 since 2008 . Please let me add few suggestions to the 1.7 update and request .
    I find editing audio on mpc ren hardware and computer screen lacks
    The mpc 4000 . On the mpc you can zoom right down to the piont were each transient looks like a flat line with a little step ... And the piont were the flat line meets the 90 degree angle to next Step in the amplitude is the piont were you set start of sample to be cut or edited. Always get perfect starting piont and end pionts of loops and samples with out clicking and popping.
    Away around this would be a function were you can lay multiple grid lines one by one with a automatic lock to transient .
    Another thing I find the covert to patch phrase function not very accurate when choping loops from my music collection. No matter how much I try it never looks the Sample tight with the project I am working on .maybe this is a transient issue . If I could zoom in on audio like legacy mpc this may not be a problem . Manually all multiple chop points might help with this .

    To create patch phrases on smaller then one bar would be nice touch to

    Another cool feature would be a function. To Change the wave form and edit window on the ren to different legacy modes ... Lets say mpc 4000 mode mpc 3000 mode on so on so fourth for example .

    Audio tracks like a conventional daw with some Kind of elastic audio or warp function like ableton or protools. We're you can edit on laptop and chop pieces and drop into mpc audio editor for choping and assigning to pads . .and do linear mix downs and arranging etc

    Also I find the note repeat is not as good as legacy mpc . Sometimes you don't get the notes recording into session as I hear them . And on beginning of loop they don't trigger as I am pressing pads and holding note repeat .

    And finally the resolution of the encoders are not accurate when controlling knobs on the internal filters . If you slightly turn encoder the smallest step you can make the variable on the effect jumps alot more in value then it should .
    So I don't get real feel of filters on mpc renn as rotating the jog wheel on my mpc 4000 using its filters

    This are just my suggestions . Other then that I am happy so far wit ren for just having fun with it.
    I feel it really needs big improvements to live up to the original Akai mpcs and even surpass them.
    I won't be selling my mpc 4000, any time soon . I am going to hang on Abit and give mpc renn a chance to develop before I consider selling renn

  • at the risk of repeating previously requested or even implemented features:

    MPC Software requests:

    * computer keyboard and / or MPC hardware screen toggling between Sequence and Program software pages

    * ability to mute individual events on the main Sequence page: this is a feature i use constantly in Logic that would be truly fantastic in the MPC Software: control-M key command on a highlighted event mutes the event

    * key-commandable waveform in and out zoom inn Sample Edit page: again in Logic my up and down arrow keys command the zoom view of the waveform allowing for quick visual for editing precisely

    * per pad Solo rather than only Mute

    * in pad layers: individual envelope and filter control Per layer would be amazing - though perhaps too much to ask and not as essential as the requests above

    lastly something of a bug that doesn't always happen: when entering automation by hand for Pitch often times the Semitones will skip numbers and very troublingly these numbers are often 5, 12, etc - ie: specific pitches i'm trying to set notes to and instead i can only set semitones to 11 or 13 instead of the desired 12

  • i love my mpc and have a smashing idea , that can really innovate the mpc renn to the next level. and i imagine it should be real simple to implement with basic logic programing.

    a feature that allows you to select a pad within a program and assign other pads with in other programs or that program to be triggered by that pad.

    example.. lets say i want to assign a notes with in a chord to be triggered by that pad.. i would select pad then assign those notes in the chord i want to be triggered.

    and also haven the option for that pad to lets say trigger the bass note of that chord in another program.. so i would would be lets say triggering my pre-programmed chords on a plugin channel with a instrument with electric piano..

    and also the bass note from another plugin program with a instrument with a synth bass.

    this would be a awesome improvement. and make writing music and performing kick ass.

    can you please tell me is there anything already like this in the mpc renn. even a chord memory function.. i just have my mpc renn 2 weeks now

    • For the kind of thing you want, It first needs to incorporate midi internal routing. Meaning a pad in track 1 has the ability to send midi to another pad in any other track.... Audio and midi should route freely i think.. (like you could route pads into pads.. Or pads into tracks.. OR a group of tracks into a pad that is on a new track)
      That would be the start of something amazing, because it isn't just limited to your idea, it can give birth to many other cool functions... Like using midi to control paramters such as the cut off filter or track volume(sidechain pumping)

      Even though a sample mite be assigned to a pad, it can still route it's midi note or audio chain elsewhere...
    • Exactly well put . If we could just route midi with in the mpc studio to other tracks and program's pads Etc. we could do it all . Endless possibilitys ., would be just like a traditional daw . That's we're mpc ren software lacks big time . Fundamental stuff

    Please comment on the following feature request. I was a longtime MPC 4000 user, and moved to Ren due to software integration. However, pad layering is missing some really useful pro features:


    - the ability to nudge layers chronologically (earlier/later)

    - the ability to set the filter amount for each layer


    Any plans for these? The first I think is paramount, as All serious producers nudge layers in any DAW & all workarounds are unuseable with the MPC Ren.

    I am sure that it would be easy to implement, while workflow would become fully pro! MPC4000 should not be better in capabilities than Ren, as otherwise, Ren is a magnificent piece of kit. Thanks!

  • There is a problem with my mpc renn. It won't recieve midi in the midi inputs 1 and 2.. I have them selected in preferences .and using a midi keyboard with good old fashion midi cables runing into the midi in. Can some one help .. Is this a mpc renn driver issue

  • I use the REN with Studio One on the PC and Logic on the Mac. I have to say the way the REN works in Logic is amazing. The Sample REC works great in Logic and Soundflower for recording from the computer is great. If I could open a saved REN project with the correct tempo in the plugin that would great and/or ReWire to over come features lost while being used as a plugin.

    1.8 Suggestions and Request

    FIXES
    1. Firmware Installation for Mac 10.8.5 and up is not simple enough, it would be great for it to work without the many steps it takes to see if it worked. I have tried almost 20 Times before I learned from the forums to install it on a windows machine.

    2. Connection from hardware to the software is too fragile. Sometimes it loses connection mid session. Please improve the connection stability.

    3. More Plug In Compatibility, many of the plug-ins I have do not work with the MPC REN so it forces me to change my workflow to ableton live while creating a beat. I would rather stay entirely inside the MPC REN.

    4. Accurate AUTO SAVE FUNCTION - it should remember every step back to the time the session was last opened. Back and forth should only erase or add the next step. Sometimes this wipes out everything on that track.

    5. Copy Bars can sometimes be really buggy - (Number of bars when deleting is inaccurate at
    times.)

    Requested Features
    1. LAST UNSAVED SESSION - THE REN SHOULD HAVE AN AUTO SAVE BACKUP SYSTEM THAT SAVES UP TO THE LAST MOVE THAT THE USER MADE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. AFTER A CRASH A SOFTWARE PROMPT SHOULD APPEAR ON SCREEN ALLOWING THE OPTION TO OPEN THE LAST UNSAVED SESSION. (ABLETON LIVE DOES THIS WELL).

    2.Track Explode Function - Takes multiple sounds programmed and assigns each to its own new track.

    3. Sample Audition Volume control.

    4. Real Time Pitch Shift & Time Stretch - (keygroup) with very little artifacting.

    5. Freeze To Pad - Freeze a sound or phrase to a pad. Freeze with or without effects options.

    6. One touch Automation (ala Maschine).

    7. Vintage Mode to individual tracks.

    8. SYNCH ON - OFF Function - The ability to disengage the synch in plug-in mode to allow quick workflow offline mode.
    then flow quickly back to the plug in mode by hitting a sync button.

    9. Effect Gesture Plug IN - (applied globally & individually) like on the Akai’s INPC FLUX PRO reminds me of Stutter Edit. (Tape Stop, Beat Repeat, Filters Turntable, Effects and Gestures).

    10. Song Mode Scroll Position - Scroll to song position with jog shuttle and double click on location to play from that position.

    11. Save Used Function - Save only sounds used in the sequence or song.

    12. Browser Assignment Improvements - Custom Options on how the browser behaves, example:
    Last Folder Positions - all folder locations stay on the last sessions positions.
    Project Folder Positions - all folder locations are saved within the project.
    Favorite Folder Positions - all folder locations can be set to be pulled up on start-up as a default.

    13. Pad Swap Function - Swapping sounds from one pad to another.

    14. REX FILES - Reading of REX files and apple loops.

    15. Patch Phrase Folder Function - Samples can be dropped into a folder and the system will automatically begin to analyze in succession each sample only prompting the user to set the bar length.

    16. A-Z Sample Listing within a program.

    17. Mixer Channel Size Options - Thin, Med & Large. Selectable Channel Width Sizes the track width should be adjustable to fit more tracks in view (a minimum of 24 - 32 viewable tracks).

    18. Mixer Channel Order Option- Drag a Mixer Channel to any location to reorder the channels as desired.

    19. Buss Channels - to save on processing power summing mixing using busses would be a great addition to the MPC software.

    20. Sample Edit Double Click Function - Double clicking on a sample in the loaded project takes us to the sample edit screen.

    21. Select Mode or Draw Mode Default Option- Allows the user to choose select mode as a default.

    22. UNLIMITED UNDO - The user should be able to undo every previous move from the last time the session was opened.

    23. 16 TUNINGS Default Option: Option to set the 16 Tunings to be the first option instead of velocity.

    24. AUDIO TRACKS

    25. VISUAL TIME STRETCH (Drag the sample end to to time stretch or time compress) - IMO Nuendo has the simplest way of time stretching with an on screen view of the sample that the user can click on select time stretch and drag the sample end to a longer or shorter position on a grid. This should be visible while playing the sequence versus typing in numbers speed and tempo.

    26. Drag and Drop Midi Files Into The Ren

    27. SAMPLE FILE ORDER - Ability to sort samples alpha-numerically

    28. NON-DESTRUCTIVE SAMPLE CHOPPING

    29. LOCK SLICES ( see RECYCLE)

    30. DRAG & Drop A SAMPLE CHOP- In sample edit mode develop a method of showing the target program on the same screen and allowing the user to drag to the preferred pad.

    31. SAMPLE BPM INDICATOR - Shows the BPM of each sample

    32. MIDI CHANNEL INSERTS - for midi fx such as stutter edit etc..

    33. 32- 48 Virtual Outputs to a DAW.

    34. PLUG-IN COPY FUNCTION - the ability to copy plugins from one track insert to the next.

  • the slow progress developing mpc software forced me to sell my mpc rennaisance . Just not stable or smooth enough on the rotatary control knobs plus akai teasing people with the mpc windows intergrated machine . Tells me mpc renn will be abandoned very soon and all akai mpc departments resource will go into the next gen mpc , I am just so happy I didn't sell my mpc 4000 a far superior machine to renn
    • I agree that's how it looks. What frustrates me is that it appears that Akai is spreading it self too thin, by putting out a heap of various controllers. I have the Ren, it's frustrating to fork out some descent cash for a product that Akai seems to keep very low on their priority list.
      I've been waiting for effects automation since forever, yep Akai are far too slow with updates, and yet the Ren has a lot of potential if only they would focus more on the Ren and not their midi controller range. My Ren has had little use for months, it's become a giant paper weight. I sold my Maschine for an Akai, now I'm wondering if that was the right move..anyway that's my 2c worth

  • well, mpc 4000 was the best MPC ever, that's all. Perfect OS, super well done.In the Renaissance, you even can't delete multiple tracks... lol.
    Don't you remember that in the mpc4000, you could convert drum programs in keygroups... ?

    I don't know. I know that they don't have the mpc 4000 code... they had to restart from the mpc5000...

    And yeah, if they are teasing people about the Windows MPC already, they will probably leave this product in the Akai's legacy.

    The only good thing about this product: you don't need an extra audio interface. It's good, when you make money doing live acts. But, for Studio, FOR SURE we have better options.
    • I can live with out the audio interface. Only cool thing I loved about the mpc renn. Was dropping plug instruments into a program file , but I can do this by midi out from mpc 4000 and and into midi in in the daw and just use daw as a sound module . And for tracking from the mpc 4000 I just sample the mpc own output with 4 kicks at the start of every solo track ... I unusually write the 4 kicks on last bar and press play on last bar to hear 4 kicks first. I save the 4 kicks in there own track and hit solo button before the sequence lands on bar 1 .. Then just export trough aksys. The mpc 4000 never let's me down ... And the audio editing and choping is as perfectly accurate no clicks or poping easy find the transients every time . Don't get me wrong i still made a bunch of tracks on the mpc renn in a few weeks . Some of the tracks ready for release. It's just the audio editing is not as good for choping ... The filters and internal filters don't sound a fraction as good as the mpc 4000. Plus there is to much stepping in the filter when u increase or lower the cutt of piont ... Plus there is a time delay on mpc renn sequencer ..example I hear bar 1.1 on my ears I finger drum so first kick LANds on 1.1 but the kick records into bar 1.2... It's like half a bar delay .,..., comming from mpc 4000 I could not live with this . And when I see akai showing off the next mpc with windows ... Plus not replying to questions regardknv mpc renn 1.7.... my Alarm bells ringing ......so I sold my renn while I Could get a good price and now used the money to but a roland tr-8 and tb-3 and now have these bad body's synced to my mpc 4000... Boy my live rig is killer now

    iT'S Crazyyy the amount of money to have an MPC that:
    1- you can't delete multiple sequences;
    2- you can't delete multiple tracks;
    3- you can't select multiple tracks;
    4 you can't save multiple sequences;
    5- when you save the project, the sequences lost the names that you gave to them. they turn to seq 1, seq 2, seq 3... why we can give names to the sequences if when you save them, you just can't see the names?... lol
    6- you can't delete multiple programs;

    the way that you can organize sounds and programs in the mpc 4000 its just amazing...
    anyways, what ABOUT AN MPC WITHOUT EFX AUTOMATION? LOL for 1.300 dollars? lol I am so stupid that I paid for that...
    And all of this thing about q links... I don't know, Maschine is so much more simple... about set up efx, record efx, filters, etc... you don't need to open menus and more menus...

    the song mode it's so like... really? XXI century and we can't record live in the song mode...Maschine does, Ableton does...
    We paid for a basic MPC (that doesn't do the work) and after this money, we are not seeing great innovation. It's just like, trying to make it stable?

    • I agree with your frustrations, at the moment because there is no effects automation my Ren is an expensive paper weight :/
      Updates and workflow improvements take forever to be released, should of kept Maschine but never mind maybe ill pick up another one if i get desperate enough lol
      But all that said, Akai Ren and Studio hardware is spot on, there shouldn't be a need to update the hardware, the only issue really is the software, it has a lot of potential to be something that could dominate its area of the market. I hope Akai take seriously the feature suggestions others have posted, because there are some really great ideas worth implementing.

    Akai ALWAYS leaves the hardwares for another without finish the work.
    MPC 5000 had a really bad OS.

    It's CRAZY.
    And we know, they don't have the 4000 code, they restart from 5000 which wasn't a good MPC.
    And we gave money for this people...
    Producers friends laugh on my face saying "do you still playing with this piece of crap? Why you don't buy the Push Controller? etc etc etc"
    And I agree: I bet that AKAI will leave this project soon.

    1. Able to change sequence bars on song mode (ex. able to make 4bar seq play only 3bar and go on to next seq on song mode)

    2. global mixer.

    3. route pad on fx to track mixer. (i just dont get it why it cant be routed to same track mixer)

    4. multi pad export. which can be done at once.

    5. fix various bugs like quantizing only selected pads dont work properly sometimes, random shut down...
