Pads mapping on AKAI ADVANCE 49

Hi everyone !

I'm using AKAI Advance 49 & VIP software on Ableton Live 9. I am currently working on a new liveset, switiching to VIP so I'm getting to know the software (and getting mental). I'll use a setlist made of my own NI Massive plugins mapped on the Keyboard's knobs.

I now would like to use the pads and map them to samples to trigger while playing synths in VIP Main mode.

Would it be possible to do it on live's Drum Rack while still using VIP for synths?

I struggle to do a proper midi mapping. Launching VIP seems to force me to use it for the pad side as well, and I get kind of lost .

Basically what I would like to is triggering samples mapped on the pads banks while still being able to play synths in the VIP/Setlist mode.

Any recommendations on how to setup that?

Or if it's not possible, on how to make it happen into VIP?

Many thanks for your help !

  • Hey RARI °,

    Thanks for posting!

Yes, you can trigger instruments with the Advance's pads in whatever software you're using! Basically, you will add your Advance as a MIDI controller in Live and then use the Advance's MIDI mode.

You can use the button labeled Control/MIDI to toggle between controlling VIP and sending MIDI data to the host DAW (press and hold Shift and push Control/MIDI to access MIDI mode). Once you are using MIDI mode, the data will bypass VIP and go directly to the host, effectively turning the Advance into a MIDI controller for your DAW rather than VIP. These modes are independent of one another so you can easily switch between controlling your synths in VIP and whatever you want in the DAW.

Try that and let me know how it works out!

  • Hi Nick,

Thanks a lot for this answer !

It works, but then what would be the best way to use audio samples mapped on the pads while playing on the VIP synths mapped on the knobs, both in the meantime

    Use a sampler plugin?

    Thanks for your time !

    • Raphael, there is totally a way to do what you describe. I was just looking into this myself last night with Studio One 4.5 and 'Impact' (which is basically a pad triggered sampler with drum presets), but any software that can receive a Midi Note to trigger a sound can work.

The thing you will need to do to separate synth playing and pads is what channels your instruments or samples are on. For example, as a default my Advance keyboard is set to play on Midi Channel 1. However, you can assign knobs, buttons, and pads to send notes or other control messages to another channel.

(I do not have VIP software loaded for this example)
      1. Hit SHIFT CONTROL. You will see a knob layout and what CC your knobs are set to send to, and a value 0 to 127 most likely.
      2. Hit Control again (view of buttons)
      3. Hit Control again (view of pads)...stop you're close!
      4. Use the up/down, left/right buttons to select which pad you want to edit.
      5. Push down on the data knob.
5a. Note name - you can rotate the knob to choose what note you want to send with the pad. *Be aware that software do not all refer to note ranges the same...it could be off an octave so this will take a little trial and error up front.
5b. MIDI Channel, this is where you should pick a different channel if you want your pads to use different sounds than the keys. In your sampler/virtual instrument you will want to use the same alternate channel. I like to use 10 or 16 for percussion sounds to loops.
5c. Mode...default is Momentary...you could also try 'toggle' depending on what your software needs to continue playing the loop or sound.

That's it! I hope this helps - you can do it!
