Possibility to use AKAI Advance with an ipad

Hi Akai-guys!

Thanks for the nice Akai Advance keyboard. We are using it a lot in our music to make the music more interesting and alive.

How is the work with making it possible to use a normal ipad to run the akai advance going?

We are really waiting for it!

Best

  • Hi Simon,

    Thanks for posting!

This would be great! The Advance does require a driver to connect properly with VIP, so I think this would be the biggest hurdle if even possible.

Typically iOS compatible keyboards need to be class-compliant and be able to operate under low-power. The Advance will work as class-compliant to some extent, so there is a possibility that you may get some response out of it automatically, though I can't say this has been fully tested and supported. I'd definitely recommend using a powered USB hub or a power supply if you're going to try it. No promises though.

Regardless, a lot of the Advance's functionality comes from VIP, so you'd need an iOS version of VIP to really get going. And at that point, we're going to need iOS versions of all your VST plugins too! I think some have started popping up already but I haven't seen anything significant yet, so you might not get very far with this right now.

I'm happy to pass along your request though!

  • Hi Corey!

Thanks for the reply. Yes I've understood that Advance require a driver to connect right with VIP and that an iOS-version of VIP is needed.

Yes, I'd be happy for you to pass along this as a request. All the steps to make this possible will eventually make it work. And this would be a great success in this units versatility.

From my side I will try to connect it through a powered USB hub.

    Keep up the good job!

    • Hi, i'm Max from Italy.
just bought Akay advance 49. (still downloading files... they site is unbelievable slow)
Anyway. I put ADVANCE under power supply 6V-1A and tried to connect to iPad.
even if the Advance take the electricity from another source, when i connect the iPad it give me this message : impossible to use the controller - it require to much energy

this, in my opinion , is very strange. I use the iPad with my Kurzweil SP5 piano and it work perfectly. the iPad do not try to "turn on the piano"with is own energy.
How is possible it not recognize the Advance is under external power?
    • Hi Max,

I have never considered powering the Advance49 and then connecting to the iPad. I can confirm you can use a powered USB hub and connect the iPad via the CCK.

I do this all the time with the IOS SimplyPiano app (and others) using an iPad Version 4.

I always power up the hub first, then connect the Advance and finally connect the iPad.

  • Hi,

May be this helps for playing iPad musical apps with Advance. Just bought Advance 61.

My iPad Pro 10.5 properly recognizes Advance keyboard :) I achieved this using a Power Adaptor for the keyboard. The hookup chain:

    - USB cable going out from Advance 61 to a non powered USB Hub.
    - Then going into a Lightning to USB Camera Adapter and finally into the Ipad.

Note: If I miss the Hub Ipad recognize Advance61 but won't work. Displayed message says: "Can't use the device. Advance 61:connected device requires too much energy".

My issue is: How can i solve the high latency I'm having? When I first launch any app latency is ok. As time goes by during my session latency starts to increase even if I have only 1 app opened.

I'd appreciate any suggestion to solved latency situation.

    Thanks!

  • I’m frustrated
to me is really ridiculolous that i have to power an USB HUB, and plus this, i have to power the AKAI with external power same time to let ipad do not reconize the AKAI is already powered! how is possibile?

The AKAI ADV 49 work with MAC, PC, Macbook with direct USB cable and this provide to the power.
SO , if ADV49 is not PROJECTED to work with an IPAD, WHY akai engineers put a power supply connector in it??

i'm thankfull to jose that found this "trick" but in same time i am really sad i SPENT 500€ to such a limited controller...

How much effort it require to upgrade a software that let iPad recognise when AKAI is already connected to EXTERNAL POWER??

I had a lot of amazing VST in iPad (KORG M1 , WAVESTATION, SYNTH MASTER) and i cannot use with this controller: what i have to do after i spent 500€ for the (considered) "TOP"? buy another?
