Praise and surprise for/on Version 2.3 (11/2018)

Hey, having Synth integration and effects presets is really awesome. Teaming up with Air Technology for the internal synth-engine is a great step forward for MPC-X music. One of the best things the current Akai MPC platform does offer is its filters (+support for the legacy Renaissance is cool, the old baby still catches on).

What a great surprise, investing in the MPC-X is covered by this big update.

  • I'm excited to try these out. Even if the synth voices aren't great (i havent tried them, they could be) they will definitely be able to take the place of certain synths in some musical contexts freeing up my hardware for other parts. I'm excited to try out the electric piano instrument especially: This is a massive plus for me. Looking at the other features I can imagine myself using the auto sampler for sure. The mode selection shortcuts seem like a great usability improvement for real-time performance (I didn't like having to jump to/from the menu and use the touch screen to go between pad and track mute mode). The big ticket items missing are now: include audio tracks in track mute mode & improved MIDI routing. If 2.4 brings those the new MPCs will finally be the devices I'd hoped they could be: in fact if that happens I see an MPC X in my future.
    • The Autosampler feature is a fantastic move for the MPC platform, well done. If
the internal synth engine isn't the same joke as it was on the Roland MV 8k, it's
a true winner. 3 Oscillators, polyphony plus build by an external team (Air Tech)
already reads differently. For simple jokes it seems an extra Mono-synth delivers.
Have some Air (Music Technology) inside the MPC hardware is quite refreshing,
we instantly feel at home with :-)
    • Having played with all 3 synths a little I'd say tube synth impressed me the most. Not only does it make for a pretty nice polysynth but the ability to customize the behaviour of the aftertouch and modwheel helps a lot. The presets are not bad either. Way more flexible and covers a far broader range than the included keygroup synths. In fact I'm imagining that in the next MPC iteration they won't bother including the bass, pads, lead or synth keygroup programs; perhaps they'll swap them out for more acoustic instrument samples.

Electric is nice in that it's flexible and tweakable making it a good option in a mix. It seems a little lacking in expression for solo play but I find it far more usable than the included epiano key group instruments.

The bassline synth seems least interesting to me, primarily because I already have several monosynths meaning I feel less inclined to use the MPC to make those sounds. Having said that it can make some nice sounds. For the MPC Live in particular this means you can have access to all this on the move which is great.

Until now I've basically only used my MPC for drums and to drive other synths meaning only using the main stereo out. With these additions I guess I'll hook up the other 4 outputs to their own mixer channels. I found using a combination of the MPC mixer and a physical mixer to be quite hard to get the mix right so this probably works. One day I'll try the other setup again, mixer master outs into MPC input (to use the XY effects), but for now my proposed setup change seems interesting: glad I went with the 20 channel mixer!

  • I’m excited
    Ditto!

I've been digging around in the synth plugin pages and loving it. Major workflow game-changer. Particularly thrilled that I can route the tube synth LFO to Osc. wave shape (among other awesome architecture options).

I was actually considering selling my MPC Live, but this has gotten my attention.

If the next update includes MIDI routing options (being able to address tracks by midi channels from external controller instead of only the current focused track), then I'll NEVER sell this thing!
