Rhythm Wolf has higher than expected noise with Howl - is this expected?

Picked up a Rhythm wolf yesterday and am really enjoying it. My intent is to use it as a scratchpad in an out-of-the-box setup and for that is is perfect. However I'm a bit surprised by the high level of noise turning up the Howl. Anything beyond 1/8th of a turn on the howl (overdrive) the noise (background - when nothing is playing) becomes very noticeable. Obviously the overdrive circuit is working on the noise associated with instruments (snare for example) because the noise in the howl does drop as the instrument noise is turned down but it seems higher than I would expect.

Are there any other owners out there that could comment if they have noticed the same result. Thanks.

By the way I do not see any MIDI CC coming out when the pots are turned. MIDI seems to be limited to notes and pattern changes. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong I would love have that level of control (external modulation), if not now sometime in the near future.

Overall the construction is solid and sound with just a little howl is great - for $200 it delivers.

  • Hi Todd,

Thanks for posting. Congrats on acquiring the Rhythm Wolf!

The Howl is an analog distortion circuit and, like many distortion effects, it is a "clipping" distortion. Just like using a compressor/limiter, the sound is "pushed up against" the upper limit of the circuit, and thus the noise floor comes up along with that as well. So what you're hearing is normal. I actually quite like it as the kick drum causes the noise and other instrument sounds to react and "pump", creating some really cool motion in the groove.

The MIDI CC is limited to notes/pattern changes as you see. That is normal.

Happy to hear you're enjoying it. Let me know if you have any other questions!

  • I have an issue with a high pitch whine when the howl knob is engaged at any level. Any one have any ideas? super annoying. Has a value slipped?
