Tom Cat - Will not restart from zero

I try to sync my TR 707 to the Tom Cat... But if i stop and restart the 707, the Tom Cat won't start with the patterns step one. The same with my TB-3, MAQ-16, Beatstep and QY 700.

Is there something to adjust? Otherwise the Tom Cat is totally senseless to me

  • Hi guys,

    Thanks for posting!

    In order for the Tomcat to return to zero again it will need to receive a Song Position Pointer = 0 message. This is something a lot of devices will send with their MIDI sync messages to send the connected devices back to start. If you're syncing via MIDI, you'll want to make sure that your device will send this message.

    Obviously, this message is not sent when using the Gate sync as opposed to MIDI sync, so to send the Tomcat back to start with Gate sync you'll need to hit the Velocity and Play/Stop button together.

    Hope this helps!

    Unbeleivable.
    I find it amazing how Akai still can't resolve this problem.

    Yes, we all are totally aware that it only resets on SPP=0.
    Thats all we keep bloody hearing.

    BUT!!!!

    It is standard midi practice to start a pattern on receiving a MIDI START command.
    It is standard midi practice to continue a pattern on receiving MIDI CONTINUE command.

    Its really simple...ON A START COMMAND RESET THE SEQ TO POS 1 AKAI!
    Or at least give me the ability to use the transport controls while in USB sync, another terribly simple firmware mod.

    The problem is every other device in the world uses this method EXCEPT for the wolf and cat. Its sooooooo simple to fix. Not all of us use DAWs. I use an iPad, and the ONLY sequencer package I've found so far that ACTUALLY outputs SPP=0 is Genome Midi Seq (when its in song mode) and Cubasis.

    Obviously the firmware for the Wolf and Tomcat are almost identical, I find it incredible that the TomCat still came out with this feature not fixed, or at least "settable".
    Akai obviously don't care, we've had over a year of complaining about this on these forums...

    I just don't get why it can't be resolved, there really is no excuse.

    i solved the problem for me: I sold the cat 2 weeks ago. Unusable for me that way :(. If AKAI fixes this bug (yes it's a terrible bug for me), i will rebuy one.. but just read the support answer: they will never fix this :(

    @Atarikid
    Bummer. Its a shame as they are really great solid little boxes for gigging. What is strange is the marketing. Akai obviously aim it at EDM, which means lots of live work, meaning you need to be far more flexible in your approach to sync. But they can really only be used with DAW in studios, not for jamming. I like using it, but its sometimes, a suffernce. For such a small change, they could make many happy, thats the part that I don't understand.

    @Brett:

    True! Just a little change and the 2 boxes would be great machines. I also don't use computers, so i'm with you! wasted chance, what a shame. i don't understand this design-decision either..

  • I’m undecided
    I was having a "play" session, I need Akai techs to read this and dispute my logic here. You say that the sequencer in these machines will only go back to start on a "song" position pointer midi message. Fine. Then explain this to me, why when I use your "internal" sequencer, (you know, the one "you" guys actually programmed and inbuilt into both the wolf and cat) why, does your sequencer when in "int" sync position, return to 0, or "start" (thats "zero" not null...) when I hit play again? Even though its in any position through a pattern, "your" internal sequencer always goes back to start (spp=0) after a stop (same as midi stop command!) button push from the wolf/cat itself? Why do you think all midi sync must be the opposite, only an spp=0 returns to zero, not a stop byte, why don't you just admit its a bug? What I have realised is your sequencer design actually works "perfectly" but you wont implement your midi the same way...why? So why doesn't a midi stop command (the same as hitting the stop button on the wolf/cat) reset it back to the start the same way the wolf/cat stop button does? Not very scientific?

    Really wanted to use this machine but this issue makes it useless. Novation, Korg and Roland have released firmware updates this year after actually listening to the customers. I can't see why Akai are ignoring this issue.

  • Hi Chris,

    Yes, Korg, Novation and Roland did, and they will do in the future. The best you can do with a Rhythm Wolf and a Tom Cat is to sell it :)... Akai may build nice controllers, but i am done with their instruments (and of course i won't buy another akai-product by virtue of their behavior in matter Tom Cat
