I’m frustrated

What format does a compact flash card need to be in order for the MPC5000 to recognise it to then internallly format it?

Hi, I have a 2GB Transcend 133x compact flash card that my Akai MPC5000 just will not format, I have tried pre-formatting it with so many different options such as FAT16, FAT32 etc, with different file sector sizes, but constantly get "cannot write PBR to CF" or Invalid FS on CF error messages. The Compact Flash card works fine inside my PC, even with Akai MPC5000 files on it saved via my PC, it still doesn't get recognised inside the MPC5000. I have contacted Akai support 5 times over 3 weeks and heard absolutely nothing back. Please can someone else help me? Thanks, David

  • Hey Ruskham,

    Thanks for posting!

The MPC5000 can use Type I and Type II CF cards with storage capacities from 32MB to 2GB. If the MPC detects that there is a card in the slot, it should be able to format the card itself without pre-formatting. Either way, FAT32 will be the format the CF card will ultimately use. Have you tried using another CF card to see if you can reproduce the same behavior?

I understand that the card is working well with other readers so this leads me to think that one or more pins on the inside of the MPC's CF slot that connect to the card could be bent, rendering it unable to read the card.

I would recommend inspecting the CF card slot to check the pins. Try using a flashlight to look into the slot and check for any misaligned pins. If you are going to disassemble the MPC, be very careful that you take your time so as to not damage any internal components and that you understand how to reassemble it. If you do not feel confident doing this on your own I would recommend asking for help from someone who is experienced with electronics assembly.

If you continue to have some difficulty and you've tried the steps above, this sounds like it could be relative to the hardware in some way and the MPC may require service. Warranty and non-warranty claims are not handled here on the forum, but I can point you in the right direction! Here are a couple of options that you could choose from:

    • Submit a Warranty or Service inquiry with our Technical Support team by logging onto the Akai Pro Support Page. Select Warranty or Service Inquiry from the drop down menu.

    or

    • For quicker support, call your nearest Support Office or International Distributor.

Make sure to reference or link this thread to help out the support team.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any additional questions.

  • Thanks very much Nick, I will format the compact flash card to FAT32, but do you know what file "allocation unit size" I should be choosing? I have about 8 different choices? I will also try looking at it with the torch tonight when I get home.

    Regards
