Alesis Crimson 2 - Is it working with Apple Logic Pro X

Hello,

I want to know if the alesis crimson 2 e drum is working with Logic Pro X fine. I ́ve tried to get it running in Garageband and Ableton Live 9 Lite but it isn ́t working well.

The main Problem is that the hihat cannot be assigned properly. The closest result I ́ve got was in Garageband. Every part worked, but unfortunately, the close hithat not.
After reading so many posts through the web, it seems that there ́s a common/global problem. And before I spent +200€ for Apple Logic Pro X, I want to know if it ́s working properly or not. I don ́t want to use addictive Drums, neither EzDrummer
nor Superior Drum. Before I spent more money I want to see results from a +900€ e drum.

  • Hi Michael,

    Thanks for posting.

The Crimson II Kit is compatible and will work with virtually any DAW.

What happens when you try to setup and configure your hi hat within Garageband? Can you please provide me with some more information?

  • Hello Bill and thanks for your reply,

For example, in Garageband the hihat is muted because it is seding different midi notes. Garageband can not map the hihat properly. The same behaviour occures in Ableton Live. Fortunately, in Ableton Live you can map the midi notes, but it wasn ́t possible to set the hihat as a working unit. I can just have the hihat to be open or closed. If I press the pedal, the hihat is muted again. As far as I ́ve seen from the settings menu in the modul, it listed the GM Mode.

I know I can do kinda mapping in Logic Pro x, also I can set the type as a V-Drum instead of GM Mode. But I don ́t know if this is going to work well.

Additionally. Working with the EzDrummer is great. Everything works in Garageband as well.

Can you please provide me with a screenshot of this? Please also clarify if you're trying to trigger samples from a plugin or if you're using the module's built-in sounds.

  • Hi. I'm having the same issue. I suspect the issue is that Garageband does not allow access to the "drum designer" tool. You can select a midi based drumset, but cannot fine tune the hardware options, one of which would allow for you to choose "vdrums" and allow the "mod" of using your hhat pedal. I can get my crimson 2 to work properly with Mainstage 3, because it has this level of control. I suspect that Logic has this granularity, but I don't have Logic, hence I can't try it out.

Requests and this explanation to both Alesis and Apple have gotten no where. I don't see why no one can or will try out the Crimson 2 on Logic and let us know the issue. I've clearly asked for them both to do this. I'm glad others are seeing this issue now too, so I'm not alone.

  • Hi, same problem. Im using logic pro X with the Alesis DM7X Advanced kit and i have no problem but with my new Crimson 2 the hithat and hithat control is not recognised. In fact the problem is the midi note send by the crimson is wrong so Logic pro dont know what to do with it.

I hope Alesis will propose something about that !

PS: sorry for my bad english

  • I found a cheap workaround that at least gets the open hihat and hihat pedal hits to work in Logic. But no luck with striking the hihat with pedal closed, anybody please respond if you find a solution.

All I did was change the midi notes on the drum module, here is how:

On the Crimson II advanced drum module
    "MENU" button
"DOWN" button to highlight "TRIGGER" option, and hit "ENTER" button.
"DOWN" button to highlight "MIDI NOTE" option and use the left and right arrow buttons to change the midi note number.
Strike the hihat pedal with your foot and change the number to "44"
Strike the hihat cymbal and change the number to "46"

This worked for me using Logic Pro X Version 10.4.1, hope it works for anybody else struggling with this issue!

  • i have done what Stefan mentioned above on my Crimson II as well and that fixed the HH EXCEPT like Stefan....no luck with striking the HH w/ closed pedal (which is the majority of playing the HH)...

I've read elsewhere people use EZ Drummer and others but this is ridiculous that there is not a solution without having to buy some expensive DAW SW...
