Alesis DM6 USB kit - sound disappearing after playing a while - drum kit still on

Hi!

I have been using my Alesis DM6 drum kit for almost a year now, and ever since I started playing I have been having issues. I will try to explain thoroughly.

First off I played the drum kit connected to an guitar amplifier since I had no real speakers to connect it to. I connected the kit via the "Output" port to the amplifier, and even though the sound wasn't great it worked.

Later on I got myself a laptop, two active speakers and Kontakt 3. I managed to get it all to work, but this is when the problems started. During the time I was playing the sound would randomly just go away. I could hit the pads but no sound could be heard. I restarted the Alesis DM6 drum module and Kontakt 3, and then it would work again for a while.

I got a suggestion to try Kontakt 5 instead, which I did, but the problem remained. Sometimes if I take a break and go away, leaving the drum kit and the laptop on, the sound would have disappeard again by the time I come back to play again.

I now use the drum kit, my active speakers and EZDrummer instead since I like it better than Kontakt, but the problem still remains. Yesterday I read some suggestions that the problem might be due to static electricity from the hi hat pedal, but I tried disconnecting it and the problem didn't go away.

I also noticed that when the drum kit works as it should, EZDrummer shows visualizations of the hits on the pads, but when the sound have "disappeared" it doesn't recognize the hits.

My thought is that it is some problem with the MIDI interface in my drum module. I have tried using different laptops without any success.

As you might understand it is difficult playing with my band when the drums "die" all the time in the middle of songs, so any help or suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks
André

  • Hi Andre,

Thanks for your post! I'd like to help! To be sure, is your DM6 module playing just fine when you're not using it with a computer and just using the built-in kits? If it's coming from the MIDI messages from the DM6, have you attempted it on another computer? Doing this will help you determine if it's the computer itself that's the problem. Sometimes, it can also be the USB connections or the USB cable itself which are all worth replacing during the testing of the MIDI connection. I hope this helps!

  • Hi Michael!

Thanks for your reply! Yes, I've recently tried playing it without the computer and it works just fine. I have also tried with another computer but the issue remains. I will try using a USB hub to see if that helps and also try another USB cable, but I have tried a new cable once and that did not help.

When I bought the kit it did not include a USB cable. Should it have? I'm using a cable I bought myself now.

    Thanks!
