Alesis Elevate 5 passive speaker distorting

I bought a pair of Alesis Elevate 5s a couple months ago. Right away, I noticed that the passive speaker has a crackly distortion. It's especially noticeable with vocal music. It's strongest at the high end of the dynamic range in a recording, but happens even when the speaker volume is quite low. I'd hoped that the problem would improve as the speaker broke in, but it did not.

I'd hoped to use these to edit video, but as it is, they're kind of useless. Do you have any suggestions, or is the speaker defective?
