  • It's really a problem ... Note that the VERY same issue is going with a Creative Emu 404 USB : no digital recording device, just "USB" microphones" instead !! (analogue, so)

Nevertheless, with those 2 soundcards, the Digital Playback devices are present on the Windows Volume Mixer ...

Then, can't we record from any digital inputs ???
What is the trick in there ???

Thanks if someone can help ..

  • Hello,

Thanks for posting about your legacy IO2.

I think the reason why this is going on is because the S/PDIF cable that you're using is not of the correct resistance. In order for the S/PDIF connection on your IO2 to work properly, you will need to be using a 110-ohm coaxial cable. Additionally, your IO2 should be set as the default playback and recording device. The S/PDIF option will not be available as a recording device.

  • Thank you Bill for your answer.

I have red that if the cable is short, a 75 ohms can be used.
All in all, wether the cable is pluged or unpluged, one should see the digital device into the recording area of the windows volume ?

Otherwise, you cannot record anything that go through spdif using Windows software ?

What do you mean exactly by "The S/PDIF option will not be available as a recording device. " ? **

Do I understand that one cannot record from the digital input ?
That would be out of my understanding ...

** In every soundcard, the fact the card is set as default or not, this never blocks the baragraph of sound going in it. Even less, that does not make it disappear ..

PS : let's suppose the signal goes effectively into spdif : can I ear it through the "Io2 usb microphone" device ??

  • Audio can be recorded through the S/PDIF connection, but that connection will not show in your list of recording devices within your computer's audio settings. As long as your IO2 is configured properly within your audio settings, you should be able to hear what is being sent through the S/PDIF connection.

  • Ok, but explain me how can I record through X device if this device is not shown in Windows, either so, has no volume control, no properties etc ? What if, if you got several soundcards, and want to record with another soundcard that is not the Io2 ? (wich has been set as "default" device as you said ? )

All this seems very odd to me.

All other soundcards they have "digital devices" shown, both on Play and Record, plus Speaker, plus Microphone, whatever ...

    I'm stunned ...

    Good evening

  • You would need to make this configuration within the software that you're using your IO2 with. For more assistance with us, please get in touch with your nearest Support Office for one-on-one assistance. Their contact information is listed on that page.

  • So, do you mean that if I use let's say Cubase or Sound Forge, I will see the Alesis Digital In, even if it is not present on the Microsoft Windows Recording Devices ??

If the answer is yes, why they do this ?
Why not to write a comprehensive behavior driver ??

  • This soundcard seems even not to have a "stereo mix" (sometimes called "What you hear" ) Recording Device .. That means you can't record everything, every sound goind through your computer ??

If you want to mix the sound of a media player with Youtube soundclip or whatever, you just cannot do this ??

Is this what we call a quality, versatile soundcard ?

In fact, you can only record your guitar or sounds from your microphone ?
    Is that all ??

    Best

  • Well, problem solved : the "digital in" device is just called "Microphone" (note that this name is absurd).

As far as a signal goes to Spdif in, you can ear it, record to it, see the levels in real time with baragraphs, change properties etc .. `

And, it seems you cannot have signal from microphone, or analog line in, when the hardware switch is set to digital ... Too bad, when all and cheaper internal soundcards can manage several separate channels !

About "stereo mix" missing feature, it seems other external usb soundcard suffers from same lack : the Creative Emu 400 USB neither have it ..

Thank you Bill R, again, to have take time to help me.

  • PS : the naming of things is a very important detail.
Bad naming can bring many confusion, under special circumstances.
