Alesis Photonx25 Midi Keyboard Start Up Help

Hello. My Alesis PhotonX 25 will not send midi to Ableton, even though Ableton is recognizing it. Is this a "plug-in and play" midi keyboard or do I need to install a driver for my macbook? I don't have any manual because I received this keyboard off a friend that passed away. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Tim,

Thanks for posting about your legacy Photon X 25.

Yes, I believe this product was class-compliant, so it won't require any drivers to communicate with your computer.

Let's have you run a test to see if your controller is sending MIDI data properly.

    MIDI-OX - PC - http://www.midiox.com/

In addition to the test below using MIDI-OX, you can also use Send SX (Windows). This program will let you know if and what MIDI information the controller is sending.

**Before you run MIDI-OX connect the MIDI Controller and power on.

    1. Download and install MIDI-OX.
    2. Run the MIDI OX application.
    3. Select the Options menu and select MIDI Devices. Make sure to select MIDI inputs and MIDI Outputs for the MIDI controller, in this case, the USB Audio Device and click OK.
    4. Select the View menu and select Input Monitor. The field type, Data1, contains the CC information. Test the functions of your controller in the monitor.

    MIDI Monitor - Mac OS X - http://www.snoize.com/MIDIMonitor/

What is it MIDI Monitor? MIDI Monitor is a free utility for Mac OS X which displays MIDI signals in a variety of formats. It can watch both incoming and outgoing MIDI streams and can filter them by message type and channel. Musicians will find it handy for tracking down confusing MIDI problems. Programmers can use it to test MIDI drivers and applications. MIDI Monitor is free to download and use.

    1. Download, and Install MIDI Monitor.
    2. Open MIDI Monitor.
    3. Click on the Sources tab to view MIDI devices. Confirm that your USB/MIDI device is listed.
    4. Once you confirm your MIDI device is connected and listed. Play any key(s) on your keyboard/controller to confirm each button or key is sending data to your computer. If your device is working you will see a message with data like below. The device is not sending data you may have a hardware issue.

Try this out and let me know how it goes!

  • Thanks for you quick reply Bill :D

I downloaded Midi Monitor and was able to see that the controller was working, so I played around with the settings on the midi Keyboard and set it to 13:Live and it is now working with Ableton.

Thanks again, looking forward to making music now

  • Have the same issue, but when I run MIDI-OX, it cannot see my PhotonX25 on my Win10 Laptop. However, I can plug the same USB cord into my MacBook, and it sees it right away. What am I missing on my PC?
